You gotta love the internet. Who knew I could Google "rectal bleeding while on your period" and find all of this. I am both shocked and relieved to know I am not the only one suffering from this condition. I am 48, normal weight 5'7 150 lbs. I have 2 kids and no health problems. I had my tubes tied when my son was born 17 years ago. I always had normal (every 28 day periods) for years. My periods have always been very light since I gave birth. I'm not sure when this started, and for a long time I had no clue the blood was coming from my rectum. I started paying more attention when the pain became severe. I knew I had hemmoroids and thought that was the cause. Now I am certain it is my period coming out of my rectum. I bleed heavily only during the time I should be having my period. I am amazed the doctors dont know more. We cant all be imagining this, it seems to be a very real issue. I will make an appointment with my doctor tomorrow and post whatever update if I learn anything new.

I'm so relieved to find out that i'm not the only one with this problem. I don't have this problem during every period, just random ones. When it does happen though, i'm in extreme pain and I can barely even move. I've had to skip work once and school 3 times because the pain is just so bad. If anyone discovers the cause of this please let me know! We'll get through this ladies!

I was so happy to find that other women are experiencing the same issue; however, it behooves me that there is not one answer to why this could be happening.
I am 47 years old and believe this started about 2 or 3 years ago. Not 100% sure of the time because like so many others, I thought I was losing my mind or something. I was thinking there is no way that I could possibly be bleeding from my rectum. But I am!
The cramps, bloating and moodiness is out of this world. The pain (tender breast too) is so unbearable that at 47 years old and three children, I am crying like a baby. I sit on the sofa rocking back and forth wishing that the the pain would subside. I bleed so heavy from both the front and back that I have to change pads every hour. I go through two packs of kotexs every single month, and my periods are 21 to 28 days apart.
If I could have everything removed to not have this pain and discomfort, I would do it in a heartbeat.
I haven't gone to my doctor because I don't want them thinking I am an hypochondriac, because I am not.
Now, that I know that I am not alone, I will be seeking assistance from my general practioner so she can refer me to someone that can hopeful help.

I am a 42 year old mother of five children ages 18-25. I had 3 C sections and my tubes were tied 18 years ago after my last son. I have just started to experience rectal bleeding in the past 2 months. It starts about 2 days before my period and I get constipated a lot more than I ever have lately. My periods have always been heavy but this other bleeding is freaking me out! I have an appoinment in 3 days, and I'm glad I found this forum because I had never heard of this happening.

Hi! I have had a problem with rectal bleeding and I had a twin molar pregnancy (1 healthy baby and 1 molar) and then a single molar followed by a normal pregnancy. I have always thought this was related to all of this.

I am so glad I am not the only one with this issue. I have some rectal bleeding during my period only, then it stops when my periods stop, and have had similar issues as well. With lots of clotting, and heavier. If anyone finds out any reason for this and posts it, that would be great.

FINALLY! I am not losing my mind! Like the rest of you it's a relief to know I am not alone in experiencing menstrual bleeding through my rectum. I have Crohn's disease so I was/am totally confused because I couldn't accept the fact that menstrual blood could actually pass through the rectum. The first few times it occured it was just random & maybe only happened once during a bowel movement in a month. Then weeks/months may go by and nothing. Just regular cycles. I am 53 by the way. I thought I would have been long past this life drama for women. Anyway, the first time I consulted my Gastroenterologist but wasn't as brave as you guys as to say it appeared to be mentrusal blood with the clotting and so forth. He did a rectal exam and there was a trace of blood but that would not be uncommon for me since my Crohn's is most often highly inflammed to the point that I am now on a type of chemo to try and keep it stabalized so they won't have to remove my intestines. So, again I had an instance with this rectal bleeding and called the nurse and told her it appeared to be menstrual and let her know it had happened before and a few days later my actual cycle started normally. I'm going crazy at this point not even having them ask me if I was/or knew which direction/area to wipe...LOL!!! The real proof I did know what I was doing and in the right way is the fact that my arm used to wipe my butt has limited mobility and yeah I'm a fat girl (shout out to you under educated so-called DR'S....fat has nothing to do with this issue) so in NO way could I be starting out with a vaginal wipe and finishing off in the same swipe with a butt wipe! Not only that, I went to the bathroom to have a normal bowel movement and the blood appeared when I wiped. After my butt was cleaned up I then did a vaginal wipe. NO BLOOD @ ALL from the vaginal wipe. Having Crohn's I have to keep watch for bleeding so I have to pay close attention. The blood I saw in the commode was NOT normal stool blood! It was menstrual with the thick clotts and all. I apologize for my life story but just letting you know you are not alone and a few minutes ago I was doing some research for a urinary problem I am experiencing and I came across some very interesting information. I have been to a urologist and had test after test and everything seems the norm, but I'm not satisfied. There is nothing normal about cycles passing through the rectum nor is it normal to wake up and you know you have to urinate but you know that if you twitch nothing but a finger your urine will release and there's nothing you can do but let it flow. NOTHING will stop it! I'm a grown woman and that's a lot of urine and forget about an adult diaper. Only waterproof pads and such can help and I don't mean that thin flimsy plastic c**p they use in hospitals. The episodes of total unrine incontinence I have happen at night and awaken me. I don't know exactly which health issue I was researching today (have many) but I came across the words rectovaginal and anovaginal fistulas. IMMEDIATELY got my attention! I had an anal fissure when I was younger so I had an idea what it was so I am now researching the above fistulas (abnormal passageway between two organs in the body or between an organ and the exterior of the body). PUHHHHHLEASE DR'S! Of all of us suffering these same symptoms, not one of our DR'S could even think to consider this? All I can say is, Thank You God because I can only attribute my findings to His spiritual guidance and I hope and pray that this information might help someone else even if it's not the answer I need. It's in the AM on Saturday morning where I am and I may not be able to see my Gastroenterologist any earlier than my apppointment in November, but I most assuredly will be asking fistula questions. I may even consult a different kidney expert to get their opinion. If I can find my way back to this site, I will update you when/if I have new information or if I find out that my findings could very well be associated with my problems. GOD BLESS & GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!
