This same scenario has been taking place for me for nearly 6 months now.
Symptoms:
- Sore throat, hard to swallow
- Tonsils some times become inflamed but only after 6pm and are fine by 4am
- Pink eye or watery eyes, often look like I'm crying if I lay down due to wateryness
- Thrush
- Moves down to chest and I get a cough
- Chills and aches and sweating but usually only for the first couple days of a new infection
- Sinus congestion and continuously runny nose that drains down the back of my throat
- Unending fatigue
There are more symptoms but I've had this string of colds/flus/infections for over 6 months now and am no longer sure whether 1 symptom is leading into another or if it is just some sort of progression for the illness.
I have tried to little effect:
Large doses Vitamin C and D
Oregano oil extract
Echinacea
Chicken broths w/garlic and onion
Antihistamines
Antibiotics - Did treat SOME of the symptoms but they ALL came back within 24 hours of finishing dosage
Apple Cider Vinegar
Zinc lozenges
Dietary changes - Removal of all wheat, dairy, and massive reduction in sugar intake
Vinegar poultice - for when my throat was really sore
Bathing in red chopped red cabbage - oddly soothing but effects were short lived
Drinks of chopped, boiled, pureed, and strained citrus fruits - whole fruit skin and all (grapefruit, orange, lime, and lemons)
Drinking massive quantities of water - makes me pee lots but hasn't washed away any bug
Eye drops - Controlled the pink eye but it came back again within 24 hrs of having stopped a 10 day treatment. Still woke up every single day with that crust on my eye lids. Using stronger stuff now which seems to be helping
Best treatments so far
Gargling with salt water - tastes gross but it stops the majority of the throat clearing and coughing for about an hour before I need to do it again. Helps me get a start on going to sleep at night as well.
Antifungal mouth wash - got rid of the Thrush but helped nothing else
Ibuprofen - seems to help with the pain and swelling in my sinuses and throat where Acetaminophin only helped with the headaches caused by all the coughing.
I am open to ideas here as to what I could do or what I could take that might help.
3 suggestions I have been given but haven't tried
- Detox body cleanse (liquid diet)
- Enema
- Leaving the city for 2 weeks to see if it's environmental
I am loathe to try these 3 each for different reasons, but they do not appeal to me. Then again good health and answers do appeal to me... save me from the Enema please and give me some suggestions.
..(Periodic Mucus Secretions?)
Sounds all too familiar except I have had mild flu symptoms (chills and aches) for 4 months now. I had the flu in January, and I haven't been the same since. I am a teacher and hadn't been in the classroom for 8 years before this one, so perhaps my immune system is adjusting; I hope that is all it is and I will be "cured" this summer. Otherwise, I'm clueless. Bloodwork looks normal but I'm coughing a lot (I don't think that is related to the flu because I had been coughing since way before January, but that is an entirely different and equally puzzling story). I am taking Tylenol or Motrin daily (2-3) and concerned that I will have side effects from taking them regularly. Anyway, will be going to yet another doctor next week. We'll see who gets it right.
The same recurring illness has been hitting me. Prior to this year If I was sick it was usually only once a year, maybe. This January it started out with a sore throat, and 3 days later turned into fever, chills, muscle aches (worst in my life), full sinus; all I wanted to do was sleep another 3 days, but I ached so much it was impossible. Real appetite was nonexistent all through, for about 3 weeks. Went from my sinuses to my lungs, and ended up with pneaumonia. 10 days of antibiotics cleared it up...or so I thought.
The same thing hit again about 3 weeks later, in early March...same time frame, same symptoms, same lung involvement, same type of treatment and apparent "cure".
Well, it's mid April and I was just feeling good and planning to get a lot done with good weather here now, and I have the sore throat again....I dread the next few weeks because I know how miserable they're going to be.
If anyone has any idea of what this horrid persistent illness actually is, I'd love to know!

Has anyone used an OTC product called Cold Calm? It is an all natural homeopathic cold remedy made by Boiron that helps you to recover much faster from a cold and if taken at the first sign of a symptom as directed, it can stop the cold all together(so I thought). I believe using this product is why I am in the same boat as the rest of you. I believe Cold Calm never completely dealt with the virus but just suppressed them--making them more and more resistant each time I took it--resulting in a super bug of sorts. I found myself needing to take it more and more often as the symptoms came back sooner and sooner. Please let me know if anyone of you used cold suppressing home remedies often and for a prolonged period of time before you got into this mess. If we can find a common denominator and the source of the problem, then we might be better able to find the solution.
Does anybody notice a seasonal difference? Do you have the symptoms in summertime? Or just in the colder months of autumn and winter?
All these symptoms sound like CFS/ME. I went to Hawaii for 3 months. Ever since then, I keep getting sick. I feel body ache, sore throat, cough, and all of the cold symptoms. I get severe body ache, I feel depressed and I get anxiety. I have so much fatigue. And all i can do is ride it out
Please please respond same thing here, how have you been since you posted this?
I have the same thing...cold goes away then comes back
Hello, Interesting to read these posts as i have recently similar problems. Over the last 2 months I have been getting flu like symptons every couple of weeks. Tiredness, chills, night sweats. It lasts for a about a week, I feel much better and get back to normal routine including excercising and it comes on again. I have had blood tests and xrays but nothing. The worry is it gets worse every time it reoccurs.
