My wish is that this is my last reply to this thread. I have had this problem in control using the methods I have described in previous posts.

Most of you guys have told stress as one factor of your situation. I have also reduced stress on my life A LOT. I think on big factor on this issue is body's and skins reaction to extreme stress that I have had. Of course, a problem like this generates anxiety, and that is a downward spiral. My 2 cents for you guys: try to cut down your stress and relax (ask even medication from a doctor if necessary) this makes your whole body much healthier and can cure your problems just by itself.

I am NOT a cigarette smoker, and never have been, but I have this issue. If you think cigarettes are the problem, perhaps you could give a reason why you think that. I cannot stand cigarettes and the smell of the smoke, but I think you are not contributing at all by making your post.

I workout regulrarly
I eat a somewhat healthy diet
I take vitamins daily (just multi's)
don't smoke
don't drink that often
no illegal drugs in a very long time

Found this thread, sounds like what I have been going through.  Mine is only on the rights side of my lip, if I shave it pretty much goes away but as soon as stubble starts coming in it gets flaky.

I did want to post here though because back in December I had shoulder surgery.  During surgery they give you antibiotics in your IV.  My symptoms disappeared for about 3 months after my surgery.  I haven't been to a doctor, I have just been using home remedies and shaving as soon as the flaking starts.  It seems like if I apply lotion very generously before bed it helps but I am a dude and I 1) forget and 2) am lazy.

It is a bit better since getting a water softener but I think that's just coincidental.

I plan on making an appointment armed with my antibiotic story, maybe that'll point me (the docs) in the right direction.

I'll keep y'all updated.

I've had this problem for a while now (redness/dry skin after shaving, and the occassional "beard-druff")The only thing I've found to work is using Selsun blue, which is a dandruff shampoo that comes in a blue bottle. Get the one with the Red Cap. Leave it on in the shower until you can feel the menthol sensation. Continue doing this from time to time. Unfortunately it wont cure it, but it sure does the job.

Had dandruff real bad when young when a friend told me to use Suave Strawberry shampoo. I have my hair fairly short rarely now and then I would get this rash if a do not shave often enough. Well it got bad! What I found I was doing different was that I was switched and tried other flavors of the shampoo (daily clarifing, Mango mandarin). The Stawberry Suave gets rid of the dandruff and the rash! ??? I have just been using it for 30 years. I came to this sight just to realize, dah, I change my shampoo. (And it is about the cheapest shampoo out there) Before told this secret I tried the common dandruff shampoos like Head and Shoulder and then I stunk and still had dandruff.

Found my cure. I have had this thing between my eyebrows for most of adult life (I’m 49) then in the moustache area for the last four years. When it spread to my chin I got worried and tried everything. This is what worked for me.It’s not an overnight cure but takes about 3 weeks and I didn’t post on this forum until I was sure it was totally gone and didn’t return. Wash face twice a day with ant-dandruff shampoo before rubbing in Daktarin cream(also twice a day). Apply a blob of ant-dandruff shampoo to a shaving brush and lather instead of shaving foam.Change your pillow case for a clean one every night or as often as possible. Once the problem has gone, keep applying the Daktarin cream for at least another 10 days. After a few months of being clear I still keep up this routine just in case but it has not returned. I hope that this helps someone as I’m so pleased to have got rid of this after so many years.

Almost the same. I don't smoke. I get dry skin/dandruff in eyebrows sometimes, or between them. It definitely is dry skin which when removed leaves raw red skin underneath, which happens after shaving. After several days, the dry skin has built up, I guess, so that when I shave it removes it leaving red skin, which at it's worse forms a thin scab. I am wondering if it is climate- I live in japan which switches from extreme humidity in summer to extreme dryness in winter, also, I am wondering if it could be related to a fungus, like athletes foot, w which I have had for some time.

yeah hi everyone , I to have the red patches and flaking if i let my facial hair grow ,it becomes very itchy and it for what ever reason is in my scalp too. shaving once it is inflamed is 100% going to be painful and make things worse, but if i keep shaved it doesnt tend to get as red,oh and if i let my facial hair grow and it does get itchy if i itch it then it kind of leaks a clearish fluid, all in less then a weeks growth,is yours the same. I havent always had this , but to be honest I have had this ever since i was released from CRC prison in norco ,ca . I remember that the water would come out black then gray and finally would be a clearish hazy color. I believe that might have been the cause of mine ,not too sure as to the real cause . Sure would like to find out what really did cause it some day.

Just a quick update on my last post.
I stopped using the Daktarin and ant- dandruff shampoo for about a week and the whole rash thing came back, possibly worse than it was before. I'm back on the stuff again and it is starting to help again but it is no way the cure that I thought it would be. Not a happy bunny.

I have only found two semi-solutions for this.

1) Shave on a regular basis. I prefer t have a full beard but with all of these job interviews I nee to shave. problem is they are all a couple months apart so I go in there looking like you all have described. When I shave consistently, I will get no redness and look fine.

2) I was in Chicago once and went to a a old school barber shop that specialized in straight razor shaves. I got one because I had an interview coming up the next day. She shaves me and wouldn't you know, redness on upper lip. She gives me a bottle that I wish I would have saved, but it was very small (size of hotel size shampoo) and has rosemary in it. It is a pale color almost going to orange or red. The chick who did it said they reason it happens is because you cannot really clean under the beard when you have it and it tugs and pulls when you do not keep it very moisturized. I try to do this but it is very hard due to me working outside and on the water (salt water). She said scrub it really good in the shower to get it clean and spend some extra time there because it will not clean easily.

I just thought about it, but I think I may try icing it and see if that helps.

Wow, thank God I found this. I thought I had mouth herpes. Jesus. I used to smoke pot from this weird frikkin bowl, that was made out of wood and something that looked like plaster or bone. I also smoke cigarettes and have a lot of stress. I have had dandruff in my eyebrows since teen years. I'm 26 now. But after that weird bowl I got these red patches only on my upper lip, and they don't itch but rather burn a little on a rare occasion. Then they get scaly. Shaving actually helps. I don't remember having this before. I am thinking it's caused by razors, smoking, and stress, but doubt it's Herpes since these are scattered thin-in-height patches, that go away with shaving and come back after hair grows. It's like they're under the skin. Could very well be a bacterial or viral infection.

I've had this problem for several years and it's very embarrassing and irritating. After visiting multiple dermatologists and going through dozens of prescriptions and even diet changes (eg, less dairy, alcohol, more water/vit E), I just assumed that this would be an ongoing problem. A dermatologist even said as much to me.

And then, a eureka moment happened about 6 or 7 months ago. Instead of shaving above my lip, I started using a decent pair of nasal hair trimmers to clip the hair above my lip down to what appears to be a close shave. Yes, it takes a little longer, but relieves the irritation. I paired this with one other change: I stopped using soap on my face. Even the gentle skin cleansers like cetaphil, etc... will leave you with rashes like this. I still shave the rest of my face and still shower/shave/trim daily. I also use a Nivea for Men moisturizing lotion which I apply conservatively after getting out of the shower. Also, avoid hot water to the face if you can. I almost  never reply to message boards like this, but I feel like I should share what helped me after going through so many years of being frustrated by it and not finding any answers. Good luck!

same problem with redness and dry flaking on upper lip, especially when moustache is allowed to grow and stays more under control with shaving at least every other day.  had dandruff on scalp for years before went too bald and started shaving head; so maybe its just certain skin types prone to dryness on certain parts of the body
