hello n3fox, so you were only 10 years old when you underwent scoliosis surgery. You are still growing when it was done, how did it affect your growing? Were you operated only once? My daughter is 11 right now and the doctor thinks she needs surgery because it's already ~50 degrees with spine twisting on the left making her left back higher than her right. I'm so scared for my daughter and cant help but think of some negative thoughts that may result of the surgery. Where was your surgery done? We are from Manitoba Canada. Thanks for your answers. Worried Mom
Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie. 15 years old currently and just had scoliosis surgery 2 years ago, during the beginning of my seventh grade year. I'm still not an expert on scoliosis, but it sure is great to know there are many who can relate to what i've been through and what i had to deal with. I'm deeply sorry for those who are going through so much pain, money, and time from scoliosis surgery. i hope i don't go through that in my future.
before, i was told from a doctor who was checking me for a physical for soccer, when she noticed my back. i had a severe S shape curve, and was given chiropractors (no help), and a brace to school. luckily i had nobody making fun of me, in fact, they said i had hard abs (: i thought it was funny. the surgery had me in a lot of pain, but i got through it.
right now, i'm doing alright, not serious pain. my left shoulder tends to bother me sometimes. what bothers me is not being able to do some activities do to bending troubles. i have a straight back no matter what. when i do stretches with dance class, if i try too hard then i end up with an aching back on the bottom. my biggest fear is my posture. my right hip is slightly higher than my left. if i stand on my left toes, i'm more well adjusted and 'straight'. i'm terrified knowing what happened to you now having neck and shoulder problems. i also needed a heel for shoes and such, but it didn't help. it was too short, not tall enough for me. my mother worries and reminds me constantly to always lift my left foot on my toes while i walk or do anything. and to adjust myself while i sit. she tells me it'll be hard but will help me in my future.
i've always thought lightly of this, like 'it won't happen to me', or 'it will not bother me in the future'... thank you, soo much. after reading your story, i really do understand how important i needed to adjust my body when i do certain things. i thought after surgery, i'd be done dealing with body issues. but i guess not. thank you for informing me.
i hope you're doing better now. you've gone through a lot, but it seems you've lived a nice life ^_^ having a family, i didn't think i could give birth in the future due to the rod, I thought being pregnant could move the rod out of my back or something. But you have given me hope. I do wish you the best!!!
Cite some randomized, controlled trials or systematic reviews on how chiropracty corrects scoliosis.
Hi I think my operation looks similar to yours (though a little higher into my neck but down in to my pelvis). I would be interested to talk more about your recovery and current pain etc. Are you available to chat further? H
tiaterry, i had scholiosis surgery when i was 14, over 23 yrs ago, i had a successful surgery however i had a bad curve and couldnt be totally corrected which is normal for my degree of curve, i recovered fine, wore a brace for a few months but good recovery, i have some lower back and shoulder pains now but nothing really till the last few years. i would still recommend surgery. you asked about pregnancy complications, i had my daughter 6 yrs ago, had to have c-section , my ob/gyn was concerned that i may have problems pushing due to the position i would need to be in,and no dr would do an epidural with my spine and the risk of hitting the wrong spot and paralyzing me ..lol.. so we opted to have scheduled csection and be totally under anestheisa.. had no problems.. so i would expect that during pregnancy and delivery it may not go perfect but i was able to have a happy heathy baby and after back surgery, c section was minor..lo, good luck with everything..
Do you have an email address please?
I too wore a milwaukee brace for 6 months, my spine was still 50 and 30 degrees. have one harrington rod; surgery was at childrens hospital in new orleans 1976 (41 years ago). i was able to jazzercise for many years. i had a baby (couldn't have an epdidural "normally", did have a block from the neck down for the emergency csection). the same year i started having severe hip pain and numbness in leg and foot. after many scarey conversations with spine surgeons, I found a pain doctor who gave me epidural injections and have very good pain relief. i have done physical therapy at least 6 times. it helps but only short term. I have 2 bulging discs at L4-L5 an L5-S1 and 2 in my cervical spine. went to chiropractor who relieved neck pain once in 8 visits. i developed lots of issues with my arm and hand pain. after much physical therapy for the neck & arms I have developed menieres disease. UGH. but I am so happy that my parents chose for me to have this surgery, my quality of life would not have been much. i have had a successful career.
I have the same thing my surgery was 40 yrs ago I'm 53 now
i'm 14 years old aswell and had my scoliosis surgery 1 months ago the left side of my neck is so painful aswell as it falling on my right side
I had my 2 surgeries 22 years ago. First had Herrington rods, one snapped after giving birth to my son. Had a second surgery and my surgeon used new French rods. I am 65 now, no problems until now. Neck pain and horrible spasms!!! First on the left side of my neck, then the right.....now both sides. The spasms are excruciating. Sharp pain in the back side of my neck. I'm afraid of the diagnosis. I have mild osteoporosis at the bottom of my spine where its not fused. I think the prognosis is not going to be good. Praying for all of you with the same problems. God bless.
I would see a good physiotherapist and build muscle in the areas that may need the extra support. Continuing with overall core strength exercise will no doubt help also.
