I've been experiencing this for about a month now. I did have a barium and an upper endoscopy. The barium came back perfect and the endoscopy showed MAYBE a slight hiatal hernia and some pretty extreme acid and minor ulcers ( I do not experience heart burn at all though). I had just had a baby and spent the majority of those 8 months with morning sickness. Even after the baby I continued to be nauseous and throwing up occasionally. I was very stressed and woke up one morning with hives. I had no reason why- and was so afraid to do anything because I had never been allergic to anything and couldn't figure out what caused it this time. I took a dose of prednesone and one night at dinner I got this weird sensation in the back of my throat and automatically assumed that this horrible allergic reaction had taken a toll for the worst and I was going into some sort of anaphylactic shock (I wasn't and totally over reacted in a state of panic) Unfortunately- that put me in the mind set that I would freak out if my throat ever closed and here was this annoying lingering goopy thing that felt like it was stuck right there in my throat right at the hollow where my collar bone meets??? I've calmed down A LOT in the last year (I was convinced it was cancer there for a while) I notice that I always have it- and know for a fact that it does spasm every now and then when I get really stressed. I did find something about some sort of rare allergic reaction that takes place in your GI tract and certain foods can upset it that never had before??? It is associated with being stressed and your immunity low (allergic reactions are an over compensation of your immune system) So.... not sure if this is what I had- or possibly something to be looked into for others I think it was like synophollic esophogeus- but can't remember.) It was really bad again tonight out of nowhere so I got on here to look.... Like I said... I've had this over a year- don't think its going away- i'm just used to it now....

wow, I never expected to see anyone else with the same problem that I have been having. I am so glad to know that there are others out there. My "throat" issue started just yesterday morning. It is as many others have said. It is like there is a pill or something caught deep in my throat. The thing is that I had been having some stomach issues a few months ago and the dr. decided for me to have an upper gi done about a month ago (before these symptoms started.) They found "pre" ulcers in my stomach so they put me on Nexium. It was yesterday in the morning that i took the pill with lots of water that it didn't quite go down. Ever since then, it hasn't gone away really. It gets much worse in the evening. I am not even sure what the dr would do for me since I just had an upper gi done. I am assuming that like you all, I will have to learn to live with it and when I do see my dr., maybe mention it to him. This may help you all, but my GP is an internal medicine family dr. I didn't know that there was a difference from a normal family dr, but there really is. They seem to know much more than a normal one.
I am really looking to hearing from the medical people on this one. As long as I know I don't have throat cancer or am not having a heart a tack and stop breathing because of it then I am good. Just REALLY REALLY irritating.

I have been dealing with the same feeling since June 2007. My doctor believes that it is LPR, which is basically GERD or reflux, but in the esophagus. He put me on Prevacid, which did not resolve the issue. Then I added Prilosec at night. It's still not resolved, but I have been able to determine that the biggest issue for me is coffee. If any of you currently drink coffee, please try to quit and see what happens (not easy for me..I need a support group). Don't replace it with tea or hot chocolate as I did. Those created same issues. Right now i am trying to just drink hot water because for some reason I need a hot drink in the morning. See what happens and let me know.
Thanks

I have Hashimotos Thyroditis, and i've experienced the same 'pill stuck in the ol' throat' thing too. Because of the location of the mystery lump, i took myself to the endo again, and he informed me that it was a Thyroid Cyst. Thyroid issues are alot more common than anyone believes. So if all else fails, get your thyroid checked out....

I have been having similar symptoms for some time now too. Wake up the morning, and feel fine. But as the day progresses, the tight/constricted sensation in my throat and neck increase. What's really odd for me, is that the sensation comes on very quickly and most strongly when I'm sitting down, particularly when my left arm is elevated or (for instance) resting on the top of a desk or counter. When I'm walking around or standing, the sensation will usually dissipate and not cause me many issues until I sit down again.
I know that stress is a very big factor for me right now, and that is almost certainly a major reason for the condition. But I'm thinking that a nerve might be getting pinched or stretched, which could explain why it occurs so quickly when I'm sitting down.
In addition to being on a steady dose of ibuprofen, I've also started taking an acid reducer, as a portion of the symptoms involved pressure in the lower esophagus. And this has helped.
My only suggestion is to consider that there could be more than one issue at play with your condition. Heart burn/acid reflux, stress, infection, etc...

For the past three months now i have had the same exact feeling. Feels like there is a big ball stuck in my throat. My throat feels like it is 1/2 was closed all day everyday. My neck muscles are extremely tight and my face is twitching. I have to force down my spit, food, drinks ect. I can see a lump pushing against my skin on my throat. I have to constantly spit and try to hock up white mucus so the lump doesn't get bigger. I have been to my primary care physician and an Endocrinologist. All my blood work is "normal" so they sent me to get an ultrasound and i am still waiting on the results. I am constantly tired and stressed out about this whole situation. I am only 23 years old and do not understand why no doctor is really trying to help me. My doctor said it is "probably" stress but wont give me anything to help my stress level. I do not have heartburn, acid reflex, infection, ear ache and i do not drink coffee..... This feeling gets worse and worse everyday and seems to be horrific in the middle of the day after lunch time. I have tried everything to de-stress myself, walking, swimming, breathing techniques..... nothing works. Does anyone have any suggestions?

hi everyone, im 16 and have had the exact same thing for a few months now. I had a thyroid ultrasound done and it was completely normal, and am now awaiting full blood work results. Hopefully going to see an ENT in soon, cause this thing, whatever it is, is REALLY starting to annoy me >;)

I had this problem for three months now. Whe it started, I'd cough and was totally unable to breath. I'd have to get up and turn my head this way and that until I was able to get a little air. Then I cough up finally it got better to the point that I stopped gasping for air. But it's still there, but in a smaller way. Here's what I think. About 3 months ago I got a bale of hay and it ended up flipping over the top of my head and covered me with hay. I think I inhaled a piece of this hay and it lodged in my throat by that thing that covers the airway part of the throat when you swallow. I can almost feel it "sticking" me when I tighten my throat muscles. It's not getting bigger or worse. It's just there. I read earlier that a person siad they had a piece of food lodged in their throat. Ditto here I think, except it's cows food. Plus on the way home, I coughed up a very small yelow particle of something that I couldn't smash between my fingers. Like hay. I think it's slowly disentegrating. And yes, I was totally hoarse when it was bad. But the gasping for air in front of my kids was scarry to me and them. I know a kid early this summer that got straw stuck in his lungs. Almost killed him. One SMALL piece of straw.

I have a variation of the same symptoms. Mine are triggered by reclining, even slightly. When I'm working, sitting up straight, there is no problem. When I sit in an easy chair, just slightly reclined, I start getting the gagging sensation. Same driving. If I keep the seat upright, no problem. Tilt it back a little and the gagging sensation returns. No burning, so I thought it isn't heartburn. Took Prilosec for a couple weeks, and Pepcid but the problem remained.

How are you able to sleep then? I am curious because it sounds like that would be difficult to deal with. hav eyous een a doctor aobut it?

Same here, but for me, i have had it for a few years. I never really paid much attention to this but now i am, because it is getting really annoying. I was about 14 when it began and now im 18. no pain no nothing, just that feeling as if something is stuck there. i tried putting my finger inside to see if it could be anything but the only thing i felt was my tonsils. i have not seen a doctor yet. i really dont want it to be cancer :-( i wish someone would help me :-(

Last year I experienced that horrible pressure like feeling and went to the ENT. After introducing a little camera into my throat (through my nose), he discovered that the "sub-tonsils" (don't remember the medical term) were infected. They were basically the tonsils below the "real tonsils". He was about to give up with the little camera when he found the infection. He mentioned that it is extremely unusual for the "lower tonsils" to get infected, and he was really surprised with his findings. I hope this helps!

Hello everybody!...
I can tell that I have the same sensation, but I'm very disappointed with these doctors that are so superficial saying that is coming from the sinus...or stomach reflux, or I don't know what kind of reason without making the right tests..
What can I tell to all of you is that back to my country they did a spit test on me ..and they discover that besides a strept that it did cause any symptoms because my body got used with it...they discover also candida ...and It is not white like I saw on the internet , but your saliva is thicker...also can get to your nose ...and go down deeper to your stomach...I had a friend of mine ...he had kinda the same thing and he needed to take an intravenous antibiotic injection.
So for an answer ask your ENT doctor to make a saliva test ...from your throat...not from your tongue...so you can spit from your back of your throat and ask them to do an immunization to the bacteria/or whatever they find, so you will know for sure that the medicine that they will give you is killing what is in there.
I hope I was useful for some of you!
Good luck!

I hope our experience will help others out there with this problem -
my husband experienced the same sensations that others have described in this forum - pill stuck in throat sensation, gone in the morning but worst as the day progresses, loss of appetite, depressed, lethargic, hoarseness ........ almost like he aged 10 yrs in 2 weeks - well we have figured out that Crestor (statin drug for high cholesterol) which he started 2 weeks ago is to blame - he took himself off of it and low and behold in just a few days he's back to feeling his old self and even the throat sensation problem is going away - so for all of you out there who are on either Crestor or Lipitor it might be the culprit - happy to say that we found the problem cause it was getting very very bad - physiologically, emotionally and physically - hope it helps someone else -
