Why would they sleep totally naked? Probably all of the above. It’s comfortable, freeing, and is more convenient for frequent adolescent sexual self-exploration.
The “latest fad”? I don’t think so - I started sleeping nude as a sixth-grader way back in 1991 and haven’t worn anything to bed in the 30+ years since. Same with my wife.

Better question - is there such a thing as a teenager who *hasn’t* ever slept naked, in any generation? The only thing that’s changed is that people are more open about private things today.

OP, it’s a simple fact that teenagers are turned on pretty much 24-7. I would imagine most of them masturbate on a more or less nightly basis, and prefer the freedom of being completely nude while doing it. Sooner or later, it just seems logical to stay naked all night, in case the urge strikes again in the early morning hours, but also just because it feels good. Eventually into adulthood, it just becomes a comfortable and natural way to sleep that never stops being sensual, but isn’t always explicitly sexual like it was in the teen years. That’s my personal experience anyway, and probably the same for your kids and their friends. Didn’t you ever sleep nude when you were their age, OP?

Err…because they can? I think they always did. The only difference is that past generations wouldn’t have revealed it openly, whereas this generation raised completely with the internet has little sense of privacy.

I have actually talked to my DS (13) who always sleeps completely nude about that and to him it's about comfort. He doesn't like to constrictet when he sleeps, so even underwear is uncomfortable to him. He wants to feel free and enjoys not having to wear clothes at all hours.
