I have had this problem for years.  Never really knew what it was.  I have felt like I was going insane I itched so much!  I have discovered what helps me is for the last few seconds of my shower to turn it as hot as I can stand.  Just a shock of hot water all over.  Then when I dry off, I have to get dressed immediately.  If I leave my skin exposed to the air, it starts to itch after the shower.  Tonight, like a lot of nights, my feet were itching SO bad that I couldn't stand it.  I had to go stick my feet in the bath under HOT water and then dry off and put on socks immediately.  The itching completely stops.  It's not a solution, but it's definitely a relief.

I have had the same symptoms for several years. I work outside a lot in the summer and I perspire (really I sweat ) very easily. The only relief I can find  is Band Aid Brand calamine spray. Walmart & K-Mart sell it but it's getting harder to find in stock. I spray it on before doing any kind of work outside and after showering. It really works for me.

i have been reading all your post and concerns about the itching; some after showering but not all. i have figured out that when showering with hard water soap is not comepletely rinsed off your body and remains on the scalp and skin and causes the burning itching sensation. also when washing clothes in hard water the soap is not completely rinsed out and can remain in clothes causeing burning and itching when sweating. not to mention the damaged it does to the fabric causing clothes to tear and fade when in the dryer. that is why there is a pillow in the lint trap.

I know this post was a while ago but if you're like me then you're always open to suggestions, this could also help to someone just searching for answers. This problem has been running through my family for years! we have had many theories about what causes it (blood heating up to quickly, sensitive to the type of towel etc.) although we're not sure what causes it I purchased a new soap from Holland and Barrett, Aloe Vera soap (99.9%) and although the itch is still there it is completely bearable, I haven't scratched once since using it! Highly recommended!

I use Aloe Vera moisturiser after showering. I also pat dry rather than rub with a towel. I find The Body Shop good for moisturisers if I run out of Aloe Vera

This is probly due to hitch high concentration of bleach or chlorine in the water

the only thing you can do

I have the same problem and i think i have the solution

It mostly comes from all the sugars stored in the body that starts to build up

Just find a medicine to clean out your system

I identify with so many symptoms -- anyone notice these trends:

--Occurs mainly around change of seasons, like spring or fall?

--Going for ages without an attack and then suddenly, it starts happening again daily?

--Feeling so drained after the itching goes away -- almost dizzy with fatigue?

I've had this problem since college, and I'm in my mid-forties now. Here are some home remedies that I have tried to get rid of the unbearable itching in my lower legs after bathing:

--After shower, run ice cold water or really hot water on legs for a 20-30 seconds.

--Heat legs with a hot hair dryer almost to the point of it being too hot... it seems to help the itching end sooner.

--Lay in bed with heavy blankets on my legs while trying to do some deep breathing to stay calm.

--Put some layer like a t-shirt over my legs, and then slap at them with a hairbrush... OK, doesn't help, but gives me some relief (creating pain helps)

Right now I am taking a Claritin at night and slathering my legs with Petroleum Jelly before bed. Then again in the morning before my shower. It has reduced my suffering to about 10 minutes, which I can deal with. It's the 45 minute sessions of itching which really make life horrible. I am also going to try to eliminate wheat and see what happens.

Last observation -- reading about the itching makes me slightly itchy!!

Huh? Why get nasty? If you don't have the problem, don't post.

Oh, and learn to spell.

Hello fellow sufferers,

I too suffer from this horrible itch but only in the winter when the heat is on in the house.  After reading many replies I took my shower tonight and at the end took my hand held shower head and put it on extremely hot.  I then used it on both legs and arms until it was too hot to handle.  I then turned off the water and slathered baby lotion on my arms and legs.  And guess what?  Only a little itch and no pain.  I just put on a robe and slippers and didn't dress just like someone suggested.  I hope this happens again.  I have been afraid to shower the pain is so bad.  so try heat.  Also, the other night I tried a hot hair dryer and that helped a little.

Actually, this is the exact solution. I had this over a long time, the itching after shower, sometimes antsy feeling on skin at night, stomach irritations, unable to sleep properly. All of these are related to gluten, so going GLUTEN FREE helps. Also checking out allergies is necessary. Another thing is removing citric acid from ur diet and see if that helps. Gluten is the reason to a lot of health related problems. Folic acid, zinc, iron tablets also helps (but medications should be taken after asking the doctor).
