Wow - I've been surfing since my symptoms began 2 years ago and I finally feel like I'm not alone. Mine is a stabbing pain in my back - ULQ - right where the pancreas is. After taking pills for an ulcer, getting an upper and lower GI done, MRI, Ultrasound, and enzyme blood work when in pain, nothing but elevated lipase levels showed up. I went to a holistic guy who did stool & saliva tests and found I had 3 parasites and candida. I did the antibiotics, probiotics, and candida diet and felt great for quite a while. Now the pain is back and not sure if it could be candida (lots of sugar over the holidays)?? It occurs after I eat, when stressed and I've been having heart burn dispite the daily enzymes, probiotics. Any ideas?

I had pain in my abdomen upper right and center area for way over 2 years. The drs kept saying it was IBS. I finally started demanding some answers when I almost lost my job because the pain was so bad I couldn't stand to sit at my desk. I felt like I needed to lie down to breath. After an upper and lower GI, ultrasounds, x-rays and Cscan and still no real diagnosis. I told the dr. to start taking out organs. After going into the 3rd year of pain my dr finally decided to take out my gallbladder. He told me it was huge, beet red and completely packed with sand, not stones. So that's my gallbladder story. Now I'm having pain in the upper left quadrant. It hurts so bad that I can't catch my breath and radiates into my shoulder. It started about 3 or 4 weeks ago and it really bothers me if I eat alot of fruit and veggies. As soon as I ate some fattening food (fried fish) the pain eased up and now it's just barely noticeable. But, I really miss my fruits and veggies and can't live on fattening fried food just to keep the pain away. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? My dr retired and I haven't found a doc that I really like yet.

I have been looking online since I have been having these symptoms. When I was 20 I had my gallbladder taken out 3wks after I delivered my son via c-section. That was a hard month. The gallbladder pain was the worst thing I ever felt. Worse than labor! After that I was having diarrhea and very bad stomach cramps. There was also some blood in my stool. It all went away and I never thought about it. Now it's been 5 years later and all of a sudden I started having a lot of blood in the toilet. It went on for 2 months before I went to the ER. They sent a refferal to the GI, which I have an appt on the 18th of March for. The doctor didn't see any external hemrhoids. I had a fecal occult test which showed positive for blood in the stool. I also took 2 urine tests that showed blood in the urine as well.

The bleeding stopped 2wks ago, finally after 3 months of bleeding every single day. Since the bleeding stopped I have been getting so sick. I can't eat anything. I mean, I can eat, but it hurts right away. It takes me so long to eat one meal. The other day I had 3 almonds and my stomach hurt soooo bad. My pain is in the ULQ. It feels like my ribs are being pushed outward. I run out of breath and I can't sit up straight. My belly gets huge too! It also starts to hurt in my back. This is all just so annoying. When I was having rectal bleeding I didn't have any other symptoms but the bleeding and nausea. I also felt tired all the time, which I still do now. I had blood tests done and I don't have anemia.

When I had my gallbladder out I had gotten pancreatitis as well because a stone tried to pass and had made my pancreas become inflammed. It hurt really bad. I don't think this is my pancreas though. I don't know what's wrong with me. I just wish my appt with the GI would hurry up.

My grandpa passed away from colon cancer 3 years ago so my mom is scared about that. I am young, but I know cancer doesn't know age. I know I don't have cancer. I just don't know what's wrong with me.

Another thing... when I was bleeding I was gaining weight. Now since the bleeding stopped and all these symptoms started.... I am losing weight. Not a lot. I have lost 3lbs in the week. I just want my appt to start. I'm glad I found a place where people feel the same way as me.

Thanks amberngriffinco for including the info about your kidney stones & all on the ULQ pain, I started with that, & occasional URQ pain, had ultrasound & SAW for MYSELF lots of stones in Gallbladder...trying lots of vitamins, healthy diets, but now ULQ pain in back worse. I have seen a Gastro specialist, advises gallbladder removal because of ultrasound, but ULback pain was surprising. I'll check out Kidney stones...right now I'm trying to wait on surgery, unless emergency situation arises.
Watch for fever, pain--so far I don't have a fever & no inflammation showing on ultrasound. They are helpful.

Yes I have also had LUQ pain for 3 years. Many tests the past year-and-three different doctors later; included Colonoscopy (IBS Diagnosised); took nexium/protonix/OTC prilosec;6 mos-no changes. no constipation/no diah. either humm IBS(?) Kidney tests DID CONFIRM (URINALYSIS sent to a Diagnostic Lab) Confirmed; bleeding from the "filtering part of the kidney" Required:Cystoscopy; normal w/INFLAMMATION of the Bladder; requring -3 YEARS of repeat labs/repeat checks (COULD BE: Pre Cancer; according to the diagnostician) Advise: Lose Weight; 50lbs get on the Lite-side-of-the-normal-of the scale; and INCREASE steamed COOKED veggies/and add FRUIT -early am before breakfast (On the empty stomach) and PM (the last thing before bed is orange/tangerine/etc. YOU'D Think-from all they say it would fare my GERD up -but IT has done the OPPOSITE. I no longer wake up-with Severe LUQ pain that felt like it was gonna come from by innerward parts out my back and thru my last two lower ribs! I also have a EGD coming up which they anticipate to be normal. The Galbladder; was suspected for-ever; though-no stones -one time sludge/the next time no sludge-no one wanted to risk surgery for "sludge" Instead I went online and followed advise for natural ways to remove gallstones/kidney stones seems to be the same -3 OZs ALL NAtural lemon juice -with 3 TBSP ALL natural Olive oil-mix well; slug it down-and prepare to stay HOME! Drink Fluids-sipping; 8 oz H2O every hour for all the hours awake and nothing else; IT set me OFF within 3 - 4 HRS I KNEW it was CLEANSING somethings out! I FELT awful thought I was gonna DIE; but I didn't and then after two hours -of a drawing type pain; I felt fine again. 5 days later -a 4 CM squishy soft rubbery stone plopped out; THIS was NOT showing UP on Cat MRI IVP-nothing -I mean I don't know here. I took the thing in to the Dr whom sent it to the lab; they didn't DX anything Abnormal-but said' "that is interesting it seems to be a detox mass of some sort and were unable to give a cause for it" though they felt it came from the kidney area-they couldn't confirm that nor disprove it. I think a lot of the c**p we eat-even the environmental things we breath are just unreal what they can cause to accumulate. I feel in my particular case; my tiny-tubes-whether it be that connect things -between gallbladder -colon parts- kidney are just -stressed out! I urge everyone to check into the diet avenues I have certainly found-out-the-best-doctors aren't super and the tests lack insights into pain; and treatments are rarely w/o severe side effects and rarer yet fix the prob only mask the symptoms. In my case the root-causes; the natural repair the body-from the cells up will probable take me years-to-do; and I admit my own fault at prob most of the damage to me. But, having lived this for years-and seeing results finally an improvement -more nights sleeping thru I think I am onto something.

Did anyone look into Celiac disease? It is often missed by doctors and has some of these symptoms.

I want to share some not so typical symptoms for gallstones, so maybe it will help someone who is suffering. I have had problems with abdominal bloating, belching, abdominal pain (mild) for years which was attributed to my IBS. However, a few weeks ago, it changed and included dry heaving and nausea. I have never had horrible pain, thank God, but as I nurse --pain is what I knew to look for. In some people--especially women--pain is not the presenting factor, but rather the nausea, vomiting, and abdominal bloating and gas. I found a doctor who would listen to me and test for gall bladder problems. The first step was to draw labs---CBC, Chemistries and Liver Function Tests (LFTs). Next was an abdominal ultra sound. It showed a large gallstone and a slightly dialated bile duct. My LFTs were elevated -- indicating problems with bile backing up towards my liver and a problem with my common bile duct (CBD). The bottom line: next Tuesday I will be having an ERCP to evaluate my CBD for possible smaller stones, then on Wednesday morning a laproscopic gallbladder removal. I know a lot of nausea/vomiting/diarrhea are to be expected post-op, but eventually I hope to be feeling much, much better!

Isn't this just encouraging. I've been having the "pain" for several months now. I had an endoscopy done, an ultrasound, an mri a year ago, all the blood work you could ever want. Doc said I had several small ulcers, acid reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome, and sent me on my merry way with an endless script for prevacid. Does it help? Not much.Actually it's getting worse. Here are a couple things I've thought about: one, I am over weight, probably 80 lbs over, a lot of it in my stomach area, so I feel pressure there sometimes. Secondly I take opoids for pain.(and I noticed several people mentioned vicodan) I take low doses of morphine and I saw where a side effect was "stomach pain", the same effect is listed with the vics. Third, because of the opoids I will experience constipation and difficulty urinating. So I really "push" around that area to get things moving.Perhaps I have strained muscles? I've cut back on the pain meds, to see if there is an effect. Anyone else? Oh, the pain meds do nothing for the ULQP. Thanks, C.S.Bell

Those are the exact symptoms that my mother had. She had them for about 18 months and had every test possible done. The doctor would tell her it was IBS or stress. She eventually went to a digestive care specialist and had an endoscope done and they found tumors on her pancreas, they thought they were cancer but it actually came back to be chronic pancreatitis. Its not a great thing to have but atleast she knows whats going on.

If you do not have insurance and you are having this pain the most important thing you can do is cleanse daily. A simple fiber mixture. Most persons that get their gallbladder removed are found to have some form of a parasite.

Most of the time I got this pain after I ate. I refused to take the pain medicine given until I knew what was wrong. I was diagnosed with a condition related to my kidneys which ended up causing the pain under my ribs. After taking antibiotics, colon cleanse and eating differently I actually felt better. I cleanse daily with a fiber product I bought over the internet. i feel better and have not had the pain since. Also I get a colonoscopy every year as well. If you do not have insurance save up the money yearly to get a colonoscopy, its worth it.

Surgery should be the last resort. You have to take care of pain as soon as you experience it or it will get worse and you will have surgery.

This is for all the people whose medical tests came all back negative (like mine): research slipping rib syndrome!
For about 20 years, every once in a while I'd have right upper quadrant pain. I'd have an ultrasound, nothing was found, it eventually went away again. I could never tie it to food, though.
About a year ago, I was training in martial arts very intensly, four times a week, and the pain started back up. I was on a trial with month with two martial arts schools, so I didn't want to miss out and kept on training. The pain got worse and worse. I finally went to the doctor again, had ultrasounds, HIDA scan, multiple MRIs, a CT scan, a bone scan, blood work, all negative. In the meantime my upper right back started to hurt too, went to the chiropractor, who put my rib back in place, as it had become "stuck" (or whatever it is ribs do...). This rib keeps going out and causing pain with every breath, which I finally realized was related to the pain in the front. The chiropractor said too that something in the front was causing this rib to keep coming out. Last week I finally found information about this slipping rib syndrome, which describes me exactly. Even the hooking maneuver used to help diagnose it is familiar to me: I noticed early on that something was "lose" along the edge of my ribs on the right side, but not on the left. I showed it to every single doctor I saw since then, wondering if it could have something to do with the pain. NONE of the doctors made the connection, they all don't know about it. I showed the info I found on slipping rib syndrome to the orthopedic guy I was seeing last week and now have a referral to a thoracic surgeon for evaluation. Sorry this is so long. The point is: for a year, all my doctors suspected something organic, mostly gall bladder related, when it's been the cartilage of my ribs. Studies I found online state that about 3% of all people with abdominal or chest pain suffer from this. Might be worth looking into for some of you.
