I had this hernia operation(keyhole) in January last year, and experienced exactly these problems, with severe and painful swelling and discolouration of the scrotum, which was virtually black!,i was very concerned and saw my GP,who assured me that this is quite "normal",and explained that after surgery bruising is inevitable, and the blood has to go somewhere, and it collects and congeals in the scrotum, and this is very painful, but it would disperse over time, and to the best of my recall this took several weeks to return to normal,it was certainly not within a few days.

Following a recurrence of the same hernia,i had an open operation to repair again on Friday last week, and of course the same swelling bruising/bleeding and extreem discomfort has occured again!,and it is virtually impossible to sit comfortably, and sleep is a luxury!,if anything it appears to be somewhat worse this time, presumably as the surgery was open and not keyhole?.

Given that hernias and so common, and the procedure to repair so frequent,it is a pity that this almost inevitable after effect is not properly and fully explained by the surgeon at the time,as refering to the possibility of some"bruising"conveys nothing of the painful reality that is experienced afterwards!.

Laproscopic Bi-lateral Inguinal Hernia Repair with Mesh

No cahnge from the my last post (2 back).  Next week will be 4 months!  Swollen testicals/scrotum remain...

Also getting odd pains in the hernia and mesh area.  Sometimes jabbing, other times a dull ache.  This is really getting old.  What a PITA this surgery has turned out to be.  At this point I am questioning having the surgery done, as the norm these days seems to be no surgery, just monitor until things get unbearable.  If all works out in the months ahead, I will be glad I did it, but if it does not, well...  Too late now!

Next doctor appointment is in 2 weeks.

I developed an Inguinal hernia on the left side about three years ago, then about a year or so ago, I developed a hernia on the right side. The hernia on the left side was the size of a large grapefruit and I wore a hernia belt to support it. I made the mistake of reading horror stories about some hernia surgeries. I kept putting mine off until one day recently when the hernia didn`t come out as usual. I took a shower and laid down. The next four hours I experienced the worst pain I`ve had in my life. After the first 30 minutes I headed for the emergency room, they tried pushing it in which wouldn`t move, they gave me enough morphine to calm the pain which it did by 70 percent for only a few minutes at a time, then I went into emergency surgery three and and a half hours after I arrived at the hospital and it went great.

I have swelling of the left testicle after two weeks, but hopefully that will become normal in time. I have my other hernia surgery next week, three weeks after my first surgery, I don`t want to wait.

One suggestion for anyone wanting to put off surgery, DON`T! The day you first notice it, call a doc, insurance or not. It will be much simpler and less pain if you get it done in the beginning. Forget the horror stories and see the Doc!

Don't want to beat a dead horse but had my hernia surgery almost 2 months ago and still have numbness and edema in my thigh but the spasms faded out over the past few days.  The numbness isn't only in my thigh but my entire leg is swollen every day.  Didn't have that swelling before the surgery.  The hospital checked me for clots and I'm going for more tests this Wednesday.  Man, I hate this.  Oh, I forgot to mention the horrible scrotal swelling. so you guys arn't alone.  I believe the swelling at the surgical site is pressing on something but I'm not gonna just sit around waiting for it to go down.  I'm still unable to work.  I hate this!  I didn't have this problem with the hernia I had fixed 5 years ago

I don't mean to double posts but couldn't figure out how the edit the first one.  Anyway, I started taking Advil and it helped a lot with the pain and swelling.  I read up on it and Ibuprofen helps with inflammation so that' probably the root of the pain and swelling.

Do you mean swelling in the scrotum or in the testicle. The scrotum can fill with blood which could mean post op bleeding is occurring which might be serious depending on the amount of blood collecting in the scrotum. This is different from a swollen testicle.

I had my left side hernia surgery Feb. 28th, It`s now March 30 2013. I had a sizable hernia because I waited three years to have it done, it became strangulated and had to have emergency surgery, the pain was incredible. I had major swelling in the left testicle and now the swelling is about a third of what it was. I had the right side done on March 20th, it wasn`t very big but it was more aggravating after surgery than the left one was. Everything is going slow but sure, went back to work light duty a week after each surgery. I wore a post surgery jock strap for 4 weeks and it helped very much, without I couldn`t sleep or walk very much without the chaffing in the groin area, baby powder helped also in that area for relief. Another month and everything should be back to normal. Always do research on the surgeon, I checked online court records, testimonies, medical ratings for about a month or two before the emergency hit me. A good doctor will do the job right. Hang in there and be patient, it takes time. Any surgery is better than an incarcerated hernia, believe me.

Hi

I see all queastions here and no answers. I am a laparoscopic surgeon based in Delhi, India. I would like to assure all of you that bruising and swelling of the scrotum post hernia surgery is absolutely normal. The swelling subsides by 3-6 weeks/ Scrotal elevation by means of a tight underwear is advisable. Apart from that anti inflammatory drugs help a little. But most of all just be relaxed and patient for atleast 6 weeks.

Have the same laproscopic closed surgery with black and lue scrotum. Sensitive to touch so it isn't 'dead'. Just part of the process. The doctor said this would happen 2-3 days after the surgery and it was normal. Doesn't feel great, still a bunch of pain, mostly  a few inches from the belly button towards my right side.

Worried more about the constipation as the intestines fill up I bulge more. Trying to eat foods conducive to bowel movements but nothing happening mid 2nd day after.

Laparoscopic Bi-lateral Inguinal Hernia Repair with Mesh – November 2012:

Last post:

No change from my last post. Next week will be about 5 months! Swollen testicles and scrotum remain... The doctor finally ordered an ultrasound which I had done last week. Now I am waiting for an Urologist referral to read them and move forward. When will this end? Frustrated!

7 month follow up:

Ultrasound indicated Bilateral Hydroceles.  Findings – “Doppler examination shows normal flow in both testes.  No mass is seen.  The epididymides are visualized.  There are mild to moderate hydroceles bilaterally.  The scrotal skin is thickened up to about 0.6 cm around both testes.”

So, at 7 months I STILL have swollen testis and a high-riding right testicle.  The surgeon and urologist seem to be ignoring the high-riding right testicle.  The tendon never relaxes to a normal state.  There is an intermittent dull ache on the right side too.  I get the impression that no one wants to deal with these issues clearly CAUSED by the surgery itself.  In the end the urologist sates if we do more surgery to correct things I may end up with even more issues.  WTF!  The only thing to do at this point is wait at least 1 year from the original surgery and revaluate…

I did find this study that appears to be very similar to my situation, but obviously not exactly the same.  I am also 53 years old.  Focal Testicular Infraction from Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair (After surgery the patient was found to have a tender, swollen, high-riding testicle…):

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3043434/

I guess I will report back after at one year passed and am revaluated at that time…
