I am a sufferer of this stabbing pain between my navel and urethra too! I'm feeling it now, and damn does it hurt! I'm afraid to stand up it's that bad. I can't believe this mystery diagnosis hasn't been discovered yet. I thought I might have a kidney stone trying to push its way through my urinary tract, but I drink at least a gallon of water every day so that wouldn't make much scene. I remember experiencing this when I was a kid too. especially in the mornings. Immediately after waking up I would begin to stretch and if I arched my back too much it would send a shooting pain between my urethra and belly button as if they were connected by a string just like everyone else is describing. Hopefully it doesn't remain a total mystery because it is quite painful and very unpleasant.

I think it can happen if you sneeze too hard or cough a lot. I have these sometimes and they REALLY hurt. You could try resting, I really don't know

Last night this happen to me.

Around 11:00 pm I was just laying down on my stomach and when I sat up to move in a different position I felt this sharp standing pain in/bellow my belly button. Once I moved to a different position (laying on my back) the pain went away and became a dull ache. When ever I try to sit up or lay on my side or bend over that pain was like a stabbing pain and sorta pulling on my belly button. But when I stand up straight it didn't hurt as much. It became a dull ache.

I was really worry and started Googleing my symptoms and it kept coming up as appendicitis. I started to get really worried but was also confused because there was some pain/tenderness was on my right side a little (like a inch or two away from my belly button) but that wasn't the center to the pain and wasn't where google says the appendix is. Around 1:30 I woke up my parents (I'm 17) because I was really worry and scared. They said it wasn't my appendix and not to worry. My mom told me to take some ibuprofen, so I did.

As soon as I took the ibuprofen (with a small glass of soda) the pain was going away. I was able to get some sleep. Still couldn't lay on my side or on my stomach but it was bearable. By the time I woke up the pain is now just some tenderness in my belly button.

My parents think I am over reacting and brush it off as gas but I know it wasn't. So when I came  across this website this morning and saw I'm not the only one who has this problem, or similar situation, I know something else is going on. Lets hope doctors find a solution or cause to this...

I"VE GOT AN ANSWER!!! So i had never had this pain before untill i just had a minor surgery on my belly button to have a mole removed.. the skin dr said it looked bad and it had to be done.  anyways right after belly button surgery the pain when peeing started.  feels like a knife has stabbed me in the belly button andis twisting it while peeing.  So today i went to the dr cause it hurts to bad to deal with anymore.  i was told that when in your mothers womb your bladder is connected to the belly button... so yes they are related there are nerves that go from bladder to belly button.  In my case the darn dr cut and or nicked those nerves.   it all depends on how you belly button heeled as a new born.  if the pain is to much go to a urologist they can fix it!!!

Im also wondering if it has to do with having.an "innie" or an "outie". I have an "innie" and experience the pain on random occasions. I've experienced it since childhood and i'm female... I haven't gone to.any doctors because, from what I've been hearing, doctors obviously have a hard time finding out what this is. This string-pulling pain is excruciating and has brought me to tears. I do believe it's a disorder though..

This pain is unbearable. I'm a 15 yr old female and I've had this pain ever since I can remember. When I get this pain, it does feel like a string pulling from the inside or my belly button straight down. It hurts when I pee, and obviously this isn't just a girl thing. It's definitely not gas. It's not "in my head" (obviously since others have it too). It's not a hernia. I don't know if it's a disorder or pinched nerve, but I do know that doctors are not familiar with it at all. I also have an "innie" bellybutton, but I dont know if that matters or not... Like I've said before, I've had this pain since at least the age of 4, but it's occasional. I recently had it this summer, and I wanted to cry because of the pain. I would not wish this pain on my worst enemy. Every time I think I find what this mysterious pain is, I find another possibility. I've heard it's a kidney infection. I've heard it's a rare urinary infection. I've heard it's a possibility of intestines being tangled up. I've heard it's from poor diet (too much sugar). I've heard it's from lack of vitamins. Even though they may be just guesses, some of these possibilities scare me somewhat. I think doctors need to research this more, because it seems common enough. I just hope someone finds the definite answer soon. If someone knows what this is, please_tell us. I'd really like to know, because everyone seems to think I'm crazy, but I know I'm not the only one who's experiencing this. I hope none of you get this anytime soon:/ hang in there guys

I was getting tired of this pain, and just had to find out what it was. And BAM... i found it:D There are about 5 different types of this disorder and I'm pretty sure I know which one I have. Just by looking at the pictures I hope this helped. And finally when you go to the doctor, you can tell him you think you have an urachal problem and ask him/her to check it out!! I am so glad I came across this blog.  My son is 15 years old and he is experiencing exactly like the reply that talked about the "string" from belly button and feeling like bladder is being ripped out.  He had the first episode of this in 7th grade.  It is random but does seem to happen when he has been exerting himself.  Most recently I brought him to the family doctor insisting he may have umbilical hernia.  He ordered Chest and Abdomen xray and sent him to surgeon for r/o hernia.  The surgeon did not see or palpate anything and felt it was just muscle strain.  He had very bad episode this week so I took him right to family doctor who still does not feel it is hernia and gave him muscle relaxer which helped but still very sore.  When it does happen it definitely is worse when he urinates and he can't straighten out when it happens.  He is a very high level wrestler and what is wierd is that it never happens during wrestling.  I am going to bring him back to surgeon because based on all this I feel even more convinced he has a muscle tear behind his belly button.....umbilical hernia.  Thanks for all the posts, my son now feels like he is not the only one experiencing this.

I had ripping pain when I moved and then it would seem to move up to my bellybutton and then it would get puffy and within a few weeks my bellybutton would start to leak. It took lots of tests and different doctors and me finding it on the web that I thought it was Patent Urachus or a Urachal cyst. I couldn't get it verified by anything. I saw a dermatologist, a hernia surgeon and then a urologist. Non of the tests could verify anything. Then my health plan changed and I went to different doctors after it started again about 1.5 years later. This time I went in before it started to leak to see if they could figure it out then. I told them it wasn't a hernia since the hernia surgeon from before told me it wasn't. I got the same runaround and finally I requested a urologist and he really didn't believe me but found a little hernia 4 inches away from my belly button which is still in my chart as a umbilical hernia. I finally got the urologist to remove my Urachas and even though he wasn't convinced. I had 2 surgeons, one did the Urachas and the other did the hernia. My follow up visit the urologist told me that the pathology report verified that it was a patent urachus. and I wasn't making up that my belly button was leaking on and off most of my life. By the way, I was 55 years old when I had surgery.

Yes! I feel this too! It usually occurs when I get up or stretch really quickly after being bent over for a while. I don't know what this is, but I can tell you what helps!

As soon as you feel that rip, double over immediately. Stay like that for a while, and try keeping your knees up (even if it means sliding around on the floor in a squatting position).

When you pee, use your hands to gently lift up the muscles under your belly button (2 cm under navel). Kind of like cupping the chubby stuff there (if you have any) and lifting it just a bit. And again, try to pee with your knees up. Even if hit means going on your tippy-toes. And when releasing, release in short bits. Just a few drops, stop flow. Another few drops, then stop flow again. All until you have no more urine to release.

Keep cupping your abdomen for a bit, even after you pee. Then, when you're ready to wipe, very slowly let go of your abdomen and vibe very careful with the rest of the peeing process. Just make sure to do things slowly and gently.

Hug your knees when necessary, and refrain from straining your muscles when having a bowel movement.

When you feel like a bad pee-session coming along, try doing some twist exercises (you know, like the ones old people do in the park). However, if it hurts while doing so, don't do it. Only do it if it doesn't hurt.

Also, when going to bed, try lee keep your knees bent at an anything-below-ninety-degree angle to your body. Refrain from stretching out.

pand remember to drink water, even if it means peeing!

This is what usually helps me. I hope at lease one person will find this helpful!

It amazes me, like many of you that this sensation is not all me.  I had looked several times across the internet on topics relating to this, and never found one that was so close.  I am a male, 35 now, and this has been going on since i was 16 ish.  I remember the first time, I was at a friends house, staying the night, and we had been working out, and swimming in his pool for a few days straight.  Practicing martial arts, and such.  The 3rd day, i got up, and went to the kitchen to get some pop corn.  I was standing straight, and had been all the way to the kitchen.  Then it happened.  A "thread or string" from my belly button down to my penis had tightened, then snapped.  When it snapped, I passed out.  I was only out for a few seconds, and I came to, got up, and acted like i slipped.  No one saw that I had passed out, and that was all i was concerned with.  Childhood stupidity.  LOL.  Years had passed, and I had been in the military, marine Corp., and had suffered a hernia.  They did repairs, and all was great.  I never related the two together.  Point is, this was before and after I had a hernia so they are not related, in my case.

I have also seen a lot of people refer to times of urination, however, that had only happened once, and again, the "thread or string" broke, and I passed out.  Luckily I had just finished doing the deed before I hit the floor.  Now, previous to this case, I had had the string feeling a few times, in long gaps of time.  Never once related to peeing.  I had realized though, since my first case, that if the string breaks, I go out like a light.  I am not prone to passing out, nor being knocked out.  Been there, done that.  It takes a lot to send me to the floor like that.  Strangely, this pain is not really SO extremely painful, that I am passing out due to pain, its only when that string breaks.

The length of time for the string, in my case, to stop tightening takes a few minutes.  It has not grown in length as time has passed.  I have told doctors the same thing you all have, and get the same reactions.  I have even looked a few times on line, and get that I may have a ovary problem, which is funny, cause i'm a dude, no ovaries included here.  But, it was nice seeing that women were experiencing the same thing.  I also see more men stating these common facts of occurrences,

Around times of urination.

After extreme workouts.

Sitting for long periods of time.

Moving too fast from one position to another.

Malnutrition for a few days.

Now these factors, as I have discovered, are the most common stages of this event.  I will have to look more deeply into the muscle structure in that region, but to my knowledge right now, there is a connective tissue running from your belly button down, no muscle to react this way.  However, the closest muscle in this area, that could very well be the culprit, is the "Psoas" muscle.  The sensation in your belly button could be a pain transference.  Yes, your body can and often times does tell you something is wrong, but gets the exact location wrong.  Perhaps the nerves in that area are not designed to relay that form of information.

So here is another question to everyone of my fellow "sting theorists   are we all prone to stress around the time this occurs?  To my best of knowledge, i was under a lot of stress each and every time this "sting" occurred.  It could have taken place days after the event, but none the less, the question still stands, had you all been going through a rough time?  I am no doctor, but one thing I have found out over the years of dealing with them, let alone living with them, they are human like you and I, and their knowledge is not divine in nature.  Meaning, they really do not know much more than you do or can discover if you use critical thinking.  I'm not saying they are useless, I am stating they are taught what they know.  And what they know are the more common effects in the human spesies.  So cases like this could bee too rare, and not deadly enough to evaluate.  I would advise talking to a muscle theorpist and give them this theory, and see if they can link these two together.

Thank you, and i will be checking up on this topic a lot, till we get more closure on this.  Keep me posted, and tell me more "cases" of events when this had happened to you.  Thank you, and cheers.

This is crazy! I always thought I was nuts since no one would get me when I tried explaining this to them! I have had this for years now and only today I decided to do some research. I cannot believe how many other people are dealing with this!

Today the pain started when I got up after sitting on a bench for about 2 hours, so my muscles couldn't have been strained, all I had done was sit down. It's been 1 and 1/2 hrs now and it still hasn't gone away! When urinating it hurt SO BAD, like never before, I thought I wouldn't be able to get up! This string description is PERFECT, it feels like it's going to rip when I stretch; I always want to stretch more, bearing the pain, but I'm scared the string will rip!

What the hell is this? What are we gonna do about it?
