I am a 33 year old male, and I have had this problem my entire life. I tried researching it online back in 2002 when I had a particularly bad case of it. There was almost nothing online about it at that time. Its reassurring now to see others report the problem. It feels like there is a rubber band being pulled tight behind my belly button. It hurts to stand up straight and sometimes it hurts when I pee. In my experience this is related to something around the bladder, something connected to the bladder, the bladder itself, or the urinary tract. Its not gastrointestinal. Ive found that it can occur when I drink or eat foods that are urinary tract irritants. It can also occur when I sit for too long. However, its not something that I can reproduce readily.  I hope someone from a university or research hospital does a study.Until then, watch what you put in your body, and take note of what you ate/drank on the days this occurrs. Thats how I manage it.

Hi everyone,

I had the same problem since high school, sometimes sever and sometimes gentle. I have had it two times in the previous two months this time very frequent. I searched a lot. I found something that may be helpful. 1) It may be related to excercising hard and some muscles, 2) There is a legiment between belly button and bladder called "urachus", I want to go to my doctor and ask her to see if there is any abnormality about that area, because since the abnormalities around that area is very rare, I guess doctors normally forget to think about it. I even didn't find anything on webmd web site about these abnormalities, and that shows how rare that is. If I get any answers I will post that here.

Ok im not a dr. But im pretty sure this happens to people whos intake on sugar is more then what there body can handle. When I say this I mean everyones body is diffrent. I strongly beleave its signs of key stones, maybe not full ones . For me  im guessing its because lately I been drinking too much coke and yesterday I also drank 2 redbulls. This happens to me only whenever iv been drinking too much soda. When Iit happens I try to drink ALOOTTT OF WATER! It seems to help. O think this time its been the worst so I dont think im going to go over board on cokes, sprites and ENERGY DRINKS anymore. The pain is Horrible.

1. It's nothing to do with the menstral cycle as it's clearly very prevalent among ment.

2. It's not to do with a yeast infection as the people describing these conditions have not been subsequently diagnosed with one.

3. It's not too much sugar. I avoid sugar.

4. It's not gas. I've never had accompanying gas from this and I know what gas feels like. It's completely different. It's more of a hot pain. It's definitely eminating from deep in the belly button, too.

4. Likewise it's not any other random BS general cure you come up with that treats any vague and nonspecific ailment. So it's about not drinking enough water, or taking enough vitamins, or whatever it is that you know is the answer even though you don't experience this.

I would like to further add that puffing out my stomach makes it worse. Can anyone confirm that this is a symptom everyone else is having so we know it's the same ailment?

The way I'm dealing with it now, and have been in the past, is I exend my abdomen - sort of sit up straight - just a tiny bit. So there's just a little bit of tug. Then after a few minutes, I extend it out a bit more. After maybe 20 or so minutes I can stand up again. Based on past experience I may deal with this for the next couple days before it goes away for months to years. I just came back from the gym, but I can't remember this accompanying physical exercise before.

Can anyone else report back if slowly stretching helped them out any?

I was having the same pulling like sharp pain symptoms around my bellybutton too from time to time eversince like 15 years ago or so... But I know how I am going to have it or not...It is when I drink fluid continuously without taking a break... I limit myself to two swallows (yes per swallow) at a time then 3 seconds pass then drink again... By this way I won't have it

But sometimes I'm so thirsty I forget to stop or unconsciously over swallow ...then I'm positive at a later time I'm having it. The worst thing is when I stand up, that's the pulling comes in so I have to crouch/ bend forward to avoid the pulling or when i pee and during the last part of the process of micturation that's when the pulling comes in again and I will retract my pee and not finish it (sooo uncomfortably) cos it will really pull hard SHARP.Lastly, when I lie in bed (no sudden stretch please) I have to find the right position.

Sometimes it takes HOURS before it disapears. I still don't know what it is, but atleast I know how to avoid it and not have a bad day. I hope this helps us all... Count your swallows and always take a 2 to three seconds rest (no cheating ..lol)

Im a 31 yr old male, and I just had this happen for the first time I can remember in years, but I do recall having it happen randomly since I was a child. My bladder would be full and cause sharp pain behind my belly button, and I'd have to hunch over, and when I urinate it hurts like hell, but then the pain slowly goes away. It's been maybe 10-15 minutes since I urinated, and my belly button only has a very, very tiny register of pain when i stretch my stomach now by arcing my back. Some of what I was reading before stumbling onto this page was that there are certain nerves in that area that cant register pain, so they go to the closest one, and that bladder pain can be felt in the navel. I know not if this is true, but it makes sense. I also register that I did drink quite a bit last night, slept all day without really drinking a whole lot of water, I had very dark yellow urine this afternoon when I woke up so obviously I was dehydrated, and then I drank a cup of tang for the first time since I was in my teens, so the dehydration coupled with sugar might have something behind it, I also finished a 44 oz Mt dew about an hour before the incident, and then relaxed in a recliner before I registered that I really really had to pee, bringing me to the event...

Hey guys.. add another sufferer to this list. I have been experiencing this since I was a kid. Couldn't remember when was the first time but my first excruciating experience with this was when I was 10. No one understands my pain- physically or mentally. The uncertainty of the occurrence is really killing me and whenever it happens it feels like I lost everything I could possibly cherish in this world and my joy, drained out of me. I would tell my parents and they'd just say it's just gas or in your head stop thinking about it and it'll go away. But no. It never did. I've been to multiple doctors in the past few years and they've been diagnosing me with whole lot of nonsense- UTI's, possible gas or gastric attack, did urine tests, ultrasound and found nothing. My parents were very unhappy. They thought I was simply putting on a show or something so I never want to go to the doctor's again after that. I've been researching this on my own for the past few years and I found that the REAL CULPRIT COULD BE OUR MEDIAN UMBILICAL LIGAMENT AKA URACHUS. It's a leftover from our foetal period and it does affect us. I was in this forum somewhere where one of the sufferer HAD A URACHAL RESECTION THAT IS TO HAVE IT REMOVED AND NEVER HAD ANY EPISODES SINCE THEN. So this could probably solve all our problems! I'm considering having it removed when I'm financially capable in future. Bless you all! Let's stay strong! I know how you feel!

This Happens to me every 3 months or so since I was very little. Went to the ER only once because of it, it was unbearable at the time, the doctor said it may have something to do with the fact that my belly button is extremelly deep, but I dunno, never investigated it since it never seems to do nothing, it just makes me suffer for a number of hours then its gone, like it never existed.

I am not worried about it, since I've had it forever I would already be dead or disabled or something if it was anything too serious. But I am really curious.

I hope this helps some of you-

I've been fighting with this for a very long time, as some of the rest of you have. My daughter is 7 and she also has suffered from this for at least half of her young life. I believe what is happening is that the median umbilical ligament is becoming irritated, possibly becoming even more susceptible to irritation due to dehydration.

I've read a great many of these posts in search of answers and through all the home remedies, drugs, doctor visits, and voodoo rain dances there has been very little relief. About a year ago I read a post theorizing that the string pain was caused by a large nerve, that runs behind the button, becoming irritated. They went on to say that even small objects, like lint, could cause a lot of irritation deep in your button. Today I pulled some lint and a large piece of glitter from my daughters belly button and shortly after that her pain had subsided. The glitter was way back in one of the little skin wrinkles and I almost didn't see it. I had the string pain today also so I checked my button for debris but found none. At first. I went back later just to make sure and I ended up pulling out 3 or 4 hairs that had clumped together (I'm a hairy manbeast) and were jammed all up in a belly button wrinkle at the main back of it. The hairs I pulled out were longer than my button is deep, yet before I tweezered them out I could only see about the top 1/8". Pulling them out gave nearly instant relief. I've still got some radiant pain but it's nothing as debilitating as it normally is.

Don't brush this off thinking that your button isn't deep enough to lose stuff in there, or because you've already looked before and didn't find anything. Body builders and fatsoes alike get this pain so just go check DEEP down in there. I mean get in there and check every single wrinkle. Have a loved-one use a flashlight and help you check it. I really hope this helps you too.

Hi Brett This is encouraging. What state are you in? I may pursue a Pelvic floor therapist. I've had this occur many times over past 25 years (I'm 43)..The only difference with latest episode ( 2 weeks ago)..it's lingering..I still have some discomfort in the general region.. ultrasound showed no issues...your thoughts?
