I am thinking about taking up running as I am getting rather overweight. I have an office job and I don't get a lot of physical exercise. I am 45 and I want to enquire if it could do me any harm to start running just like that? Could there be any side effects or do I have to slowly build up? Thank you for your information.
im a runner but it didnt just happen over night it is important to build up slowly to avoid serious muscle or joint damage and at 45 you dont want to worry about strains in your respiratory or cardiac systems.

I am a runner and from expereince - it is really important to warm up very good before starting - knees and ankles are a priority. and after a good run you need to stretch leg muscles (quadriceps stretch etc.) but before running do not skip warming up knees and ankles - that is a must otherwise it is very possible to have knee injuries. also, get a good pair of running shoes (they do not need to be expensive, but they do have to fit). I usually buy one number bigger running shoes (8,5) comparing to my standard number (8 ) .
Running is a great sport - I am gald you have decided to start. Remember, it may be hard at the beginning, particularly if you haven't been active in a while. But start small - perhaps start with fast walking - which is also very, very good for weight and fat loss. My best!

Running has both physical and psychological benefits. Running burns calorie which is needed to reduce weight. Also our mind feels fresh and focused by running. 50% of lung which is kept unused gets working while running. So its good to start this practice.
If you don't wear adequate running shoes, you can do damage to your legs and knees. But if you have the right equipment, running will make your legs, and more importantly, your heart, stronger.
