i was surprised to find so many forums about this. I am wondering do any of us smelling this smoke feel that they have a sixth sense that is sometimes sharper then others? I am always looking for answers and not necessary scientific ones. I could see how it could be sinus related, but the smell is soooo strong. I am afraid to say something to my husband in fear of looking crazy. So, if you have a feel for "things" maybe it is about that sixth sense. I do believe I have an acute sixth sense.
I've been having the same problem and it started about 3 weeks ago.
It's really pissing me off, everywhere I go, I smell cigarette smoke and at times it's almost overwhelming to the point that I swear there's a fume or gas leak. I keep asking my family members if they smell it and they don't. I know I was sick about 2 months ago with a nasty cold that lasted about a month and a half. My nose was giving me grief, so it could be a serious nasal/sinus problem.
If there's a doctor in the house please respond and help. >:(
It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one with this weird symptom! This has been an intermittent problem for me for the past few months. Like many others who have posted messages, I also have sinus infections and occasional headaches. Probably being cooped up in the winter doesn't help. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
Nice to see I'm not alone. My wife uses the fireplace all the time, and I'm used to smelling smoke in the house. But, now the smell is constant, even when I'm at work. It's annoying but it doesn't keep me awake or interfere with my other activities. Nonetheless, I'd love to get rid of this sensation. If it keeps up, I'll see my doctor, but, from what I've read here, I'm not that hopeful he could help. By the way, I smoked for 42 years and quit 7 months ago cold turkey without even planning to do it.
I am just getting over a bad sinus infection and have had the same problems..I have found some relief by chewing a mint flavoued gum...of course at times that doesn't even help.
I too have smell smoke it's a wood smoke for me. it started when we moved into our house 6 years ago. it comes and goes maybe every 6 mo or so. and lasts a few weeks at a time. it is in summer as well as winter .at first I thought it was from peoples firplaces or wood stoves next door. but then when it came in the summer when it was hot and 90 out I knew that was not what it was. then I started thinking maybe someone had died in this house that smoked and it is their spirit(hey anything to explane it will work for me.) but then I started having the smell every where I went. I do not take any medication, have not been sick. I thought I was going crazy asking my kids all the time "don't you smell that smoke?" they all say "what smoke" no one smokes in our house. but to find out there are so many of us that smell smoke is good for me. at least I know Im not crazy. I just wish someone like a DR would come on and tell us what this is. its sorta scary to think so many of us have it yet no one knows what it is.
i too smell smoke most all of the time. i notice that i dont smell any smoke when i put my cpap mask on....its for sleep apnea. we must have some sort of similar links in common......
Finally, I am relieved to find out that I am not the only one who has this problem. I often smell cigarette smoke when I do not smoke and no one around me or in my house smokes. I ask other family members as well and they say that they can not smell the smoke. I was afraid I was losing my mind. I did not approach this medically, although I have had sinus problems and allergies for years. Due to headaches and seizure like activity, I had a cat scan and they found a mass in my maxillary sinus cavity. Two years ago I the mass removed from my maxillary sinus cavity. It resolved some of my problems, but I still have off and on the smell of smoke, but have lost some sense of smell completely. I am currently seeking an answer for this problem and will address the smell of smoke at this time.
Wow. I just started smelling smoke (non-smoker in a non-smoking environment) for the past week. I thought I was crazy at first. I've been suffering from a cold & sinus - and figured it was part of this. Now I'm a little worried after reading your posts and seeing it's lasted so long with no relief. Has anyone seen a specialist on this?
I have been smelling smoke on and off for the past ten years. I have some of the symptoms others have stated like diabetes, obesity, stress, and I recently bought a laptop. This problem goes on and off. I do smell it during times of stress. I ride my motorcycle and I stop smelling it for a while but then it comes back. One time I was playing a playstation 3 game called Fallout. The game stressed my out so bad it gave me a dizzy feeling. The smell of smoke never seem stronger than when I felt stressed out. My work can do the same thing. One time my work was so stressful that I smelled smoke so strong, I thought the building was on fire. I asked around but no one could smell the smoke. They all laughed at me. The job wasn't stressfull, it was the people I was working with that were stressing me out. They seemed to enjoy making fun of me or belittling me. They made work very hard for me. When I was laid off from work, I felt relieved and the smoke was gone. I need a different occupation. Stress I think is the answer. I think its one way our body tells us we are in danger. We are overheating so to speak.
I have had a sinus problem for over a year and this has been a side affect for much of that time. I have an appointment with an ENT specialist at a large teaching hospital in the city so I hope they will be able to help me. I have already seen a local ENT doctor but with no results.

Smelling Smoke All the Time - Part 2
I had a sinus infection and bronchitis, and it lasted long enough for me to have to take three (3!) rounds of antibiotics before it finally went away. I was left with this same thing of smelling cigarette smoke. It IS ANNOYING!!! I'm a nonsmoker. I'm very offended to even be around people who smoke, as I can't stand the smell, I do not want my lungs affected by secondhand smoke, and I do not want to have my hair and clothes smelling like a chimney either. I would rather be smelling heavy perfume than cigarette smoke, but I do sympathize wth the person who has developed allergies. I'm disappointed in the pre-med student who was sooo unsympathetic, inconsiderate, disrespectful, and closed minded. If that is what you are being taught in your school... #1. I dare say that you are not attending a very good school, #2. you do not possess the qualities of a doctor, so you might better look for another profession....try your hand at being a lawyer...some of them, not all of course, are quite uncaring, but you can still make the money that obviously is your priority, and #3. please let us know what city and state that you plan to practice so that we can all steer clear!!! Back to the subject at hand...It is a real problem. I've had this symptom for a little over 2 months, with a slowing down only after acupuncture. But it is not gone, and since I haven't been to the acupuncturist in over a week, it is back to almost full time. Now where are the REAL doctors out there? The knowledgeable ones that also listen with compassion and understanding??? We need answers. I can understand if it is there because of our sinuses. But what can we do to rectify the problem???? Please help us1!
