Like almost all of the posters here, I had the awful symptoms. Tongue, gums and throat ALL super painful. Almost impossible to eat. Like many of the posts, a doctor gave me a one minute exam and prescribed antibiotics. The antibiotics do NOTHING. This is a VIRAL disease, NOT BACTERIAL. Don't take antibiotics, they don't help and will wipe out the good bacteria in your digestive track leaving you susceptible to future infection.

The BAD NEWS. You basically just have to ride this one out. After 7 to 10 days, really AWFUL days, you will be feeling better. That is how our immune system works.

How can you feel better? I used the Lidocaine gel the doc prescribed and it was minimally useful. Gross and only helped for 15 minutes. Smoothies weren't great because they were too acidic. The only thing that made me feel better, no kidding, was Strawberry Daquiris ... and I'm a beer drinker.

Good luck! It's no fun, but just keep saying to yourself, "This too shall pass."

Herpes virus can lay dormant for years after contracting it. Your immune system may have been down ands that's when it came out. Most people have contracted Herpes within their lifetime . You may have even had it as a baby.

One additional thing I forgot to mention. I did rinse with dilute hydrogen peroxide (3% mixed with 1/2 water). In addition, since my gums were so raw and I couldn't brush my teeth, I used mouthwash. It was painful for a second, but served to numb the pain and freshen my mouth. Well worth it in my opinion.

Good luck!

I have this exact same thing right now. Did you ever find out what it was or how to treat it? Or even how long it lasted?

I have been going through the exact same thing. Mine started 5 days ago with a fever...I then developed a sore throat and swollen gums/sores on my tongue. I went to the doctor and tested positive for strep and was put on antibiotics. My fever and sore throat went away but my gums were still swollen and had sores on my tongue with new ones developing. I just went back to the doctor today and he said it was a viral condition that antibiotics wouldn't help so he gave me Magic Mouthwash which has already helped me so much! If you are going through this please try that out, it is working a miracle on my mouth and I know how horrible it is to be going through this.

I have the exact same thing going on with me. I was sick with a sore throat a week ago and since then my tongue and gums have so many canker sores on them. You're right it is embarasing and extremely painful. Forget eating. Anyways I went to the doc yesterday and was diagnosed with strep. May I ask how long it lasts because I've been sick over a week now. :(

It's herpes-1 , it's a virus . The first time you get it it's pretty bad as you describe . Then it will always be in your system and you will get occasional cold sores when your immune system is weakened . It always happens to me when I'm under a lot of stress . I just gave it no my toddler , she shared some food with me and she has the exact symptoms as you describe :(
