I just got antibiotics for my strep and it is starting to go away but my gums are still swollen and I have 2 cold sores and a sore on my tongue and by my molar so I think that it is pretty normal for this to happen with strep because my friend gave it to me and they also had this too

My message might be late but it might help someone. I had same symptoms. I went to doctor to show my sores on my lips and cheeks (inside mouth). Doctor was an id**t and she gave me antibiotics, which I found out later, from knowledgeable doctor that antibiotics, make the sores stronger. Then two days after using antibiotics I got sore on my tongue and then sore got bigger (red sore in throat, Uvula, lips, tongue, soft palate and all over my mouth and swollen gums) and then I lost my voice and couldn’t move my tongue and lips.
Then my family doctor sent me to throat specialist and he gave me anti-virus which those tablet helped to stop to grow the sores. Then he sent me to hospital to mouth specialist, which I found they were so id**t and stupid. They did the blood test and biopsy and couldn’t figure out the problem and he gave me a tablet, which wasn’t relevant and could cause more problems for my body like stomach pain, liver, kidney and losing my bones. I should mention that all those (IDIOTS) doctors did not have food recipes and they just told me to have milkshake with rice and honey. Then again, later on I found out that those foods helped the sores stronger. Therefore, my tong turned to have a white color thick layer. Any way, because of 6 stupid doctors I suffered a month and half.
Finally, by chance I met a doctor in Toronto (Canada) who is really knowledgeable. He is doing Homeopathy and working with herbal. He gave me food reciepe and medication. He cured my sores. I had the worst case and I couldn't even drink water. He saved my life.
Any way, the doctor's name is;
Sohrab Khoshbin *****
I hope my message would be helpful :-)

What was the FOOD RECIPE AND MEDICATION?

I am experiencing the same thing. I waas treated for it Nov. 5/12 but not I have another bout. My tongue is sore, it hurts to swallow (especially eating toast etc) My gums are sore but no bleeding when I floss - they feel like little blisters.
I was told it was a bacterial infection on the 5th it has come back!

I believe this is the ONLY answer here that is correct. If a strep test is negative and a mono test as well. Hand foot and mouth disease, while scary and painful, will eventually go away on it's own. It IS very contagious. Both my grandsons have had it. And from what I understand, it can run rampant in schools. It is caused by a virus.

Hi all glad to read some of this stuff as it is helping me hold off going to any doctor for anything. I recently started getting symptoms most of you talk about slow at 1st then full on everything. It started Jan 9th with a sore throat and headache. I thought it was just because i had gotten really drunk the night before and had a hangover. By Thursday morning, Jan 10th, I still had the sore throat and had developed puffy, not yet sore gums. By Friday Jan 11th I had sore throat, swollen sore gums, and a lil sore on my tongue. Same Saturday plus a lil sore on lip, and Sunday I actually got to see the white spots on the back of my throat where ur tonsils are on both sides. I forgot to add of course the lymph nodes under the jaw on the corners were swollen since like Thursday as this is the 1st line of defense for an infection or virus i presume. Eitherway I have used the Hot salt water swish around hasnt really done too much for me. I picked up Hydrogen Peroxide and tho it doesnt seem to really take anything away other than the pain, which is still awesome, I dont notice a real physical change. Maybe a lil less pressure in the gums. I dont delude it by the way. I also picked up Oragel because i remember having senstitive gums as a kid and it did wonder. It still does. If ur gums are hurting you PLEASE pick up some Ora-gel. It will numb your gums/mouth, wherever you put the stuff in your mouth for at least 20-30 mins which is enough to fall asleep with. Hoping its just strep or hand/foot/mouth diesase and not anything more serious. I did go down on this girl 2 weeks ago and then a week later and havent had this outbreak before until her so im alittle skepitcal it could be a possiblity of oral herpes though im told it cant be given vagina to mouth. Sounds fake but im trying what i can until it really beats me and then ill go get it checked out. Only been able to enjoy eating soup at a room temp. Not hot! Also cold water is very harsh on my teeth and gums right now as is Orange Juice even tho i figured OJ to be good for immune system boosting but the acid is too much for the teeth and gums. Keep posting things as id love for someone to find a cure and ill try to keep yall posted on when it stops or when i go to the doc and what happens.

I am suffering from this EXACT thing. I had strep throat and then suddenly I had an outbreak of canker (cold) sores, mostly on my tongue (which I find weird), and also extremely sensitive gums. I'm still on antibiotics, swish listerine on regular basis, and use a c**p ton of numbing stuff. It's been two days since my "throat" has been sore, but the sores and sensitivity still plague my mouth making it difficult to eat. I don't know what to do besides wait it out (I've already been to the doc).

Hi all, I'm a 27 yr old nurse and just this past week I'm experience similar problems.  Early in the week I noticed my gums were painful but I have had issues with my gums before so didn't think much of it.  Wednesday I noticed swollen lymph nodes just under my chin and then that night I started experience chills and night sweats.  Thursday morning I woke up feeling awful, basically flu-like but without any congestion/cough/sneezing.  By this time my gums were more swollen and very red.  I went to the dr and had a negative strep test, was told to just ride it out.  When I woke up Friday I still felt awful and I did notice a small tan/brown patch on my lower lip but didn't think much of it because in the winter I pick at my lips so bad they bleed daily and I had done this the night before.  I continued to pick at my lips that morning and even at the sore, it wasn't particularly painful.  I called my dentist at this point because my teeth were starting to hurt and the gums weren't improving at all.  Immediately when the dentist and peridontist saw my lip they identified it as a cold sore.  I have never had one before and it didn't look like I had always thought.  They basically told me that it was most likely all related, that my gums and lymph nodes definitely could be a results of an oral herpes outbreak.  I mentioned I had also been having systemic symptoms and they said that could happen too.  So, I was given acylcolivr (zovirax) and have been taking that for a full 24 hours now.  I woke up today with my body feeling better but mouth still the same condition.  I'm wondering if this is actually a cold sore because when I look them up online it seems like there are stages that last days and mine just popped up 24 hours ago and already appears crusty as it should in the last stage, usually after a week!  Also, I don't have any sores or white patches anywhere else in my mouth.  I did kiss a new boy for the first time a week ago and since my lips always have open sores since I pick at them then it makes perfect sense that I could have contracted the oral herpes from him.  Does anyone know the likelihood that I'll have a recurrent outbreak?  Most websites say that 80% of people acquire this virus in childhood but most never have any symptoms or only have one initial outbreak and may never have another.  I'm hoping that is the case for me but I can't find that information anywhere.  Also, does anyone have any idea how long the symptoms last?  I know the sores can stay 7-14 days but what about the swollen and painful mouth and flu sx?  I read that you're supposed to keep the sores dry and my dentist mentioned that as well but my lips are so chapped and broken I really need to put something on them.  Any ideas??  Thanks guys!!

I have never responded on one of these sites before but this experience has been the most painful and frustrating experience in my life and this forum was the most helpful in helping me figure out what was wrong.  My first trip to Doctor I was told it was strep throat and put on antibiotics.  After 3 days with no improvement I went back to a different doctor and was told it was a virus.  I asked if it could be Oral herpes or Shingles and the doctor immediately replied no.  But he is wrong and I think the issue is that doctors don't think of Oral herpes as being in the mouth - versus cold sores on the mouth.  On the website , they list the following as symptoms for Oral herpes.  Sounds familiar?

Oral sores: The most intense pain caused by these sores occurs at the onset and can make eating and drinking difficult.

The sores can occur on the lips, gums, throat, the front of the tongue, the inside of the cheeks, and the roof of the mouth.

They can also extend down the chin and neck.

The gums can become mildly swollen, red-colored, and may bleed.

Neck lymph nodes often swell and become painful.

People in their teens and 20s can develop a painful throat with shallow ulcers and a grayish coating on the tonsils.

Unless diagnosed within a couple of days, there really isn't much to do but treat the symptoms with pain meds and topical numbing agents like lidocain.  Salt water rinses and peroxide rinses regularly also seem to help.   I'm on day 7 and told this can last 2-3 weeks. I'm praying symptoms improve because I'm losing too much weight not being able to eat normally.

This posting has been helpful to me too so I thought I'd leave comments on what I found worked for me, because not many have posted if they found a way to ease these symptoms, and I think I have!!!

I've experienced many of the symptoms posted here and I will probably also say that I probably had oral herpes as well. I had a fever that lasted a few days, then the next day very swollen tender gums that made it hard to eat (also sore throat and swollen lymph nodes), followed by sores on the tongue and inside the mouth that were painful. I also had sores that developed on the lips which made my lips swell. These were white sores, red border.  I was just miserable, as I'm sure you can all relate.

I was desperate and knew a doc would not help (look at all the posts here with docs misdiagnosing things), so I went to an ACUPUNCTURIST. For most people with this kind of problem, it's a blood deficiency and, as some mentioned, a B12 deficiency. Also, most of you are probably under a ton of stress (I was) and so acupuncture can help in this regard. You can get supplements for blood deficiency-related things almost anywhere (B12 liquid vitamin and Hema-plex was recommended to me) but one of the best herbal remedies I was given was watermelon frost which is applied to the mouth and can help with a lot of people's symptoms here. The stuff is weird but is suppose to work very well for cold sores. Within 2 days of going to the acupuncturist and taking herbs, I was feeling a lot better.

It's been 3 days since I went to the acupuncturist/herbalist and my gums are almost back to normal, my sores are almost all gone and I can finally eat normally again! Natural remedies are so amazing, I'm a believer and I hope this helps people. So my recommendation is to find a good acupuncturist/herbalist if you can or better yet, a holistic doc. Be sure to rule out strep first (strep=white patches in the back of the throat), shingles (you'll have more than just pain in the mouth area) and hand foot mouth (probably unlikely and more likely to affect children).

Good luck everyone!

Found this thread when researching my symptoms and wanted to share my story, as well as keep you guys updated as I work myself back into a healthy state again (hopefully soon!)

Been really stressed out recently (especially last week) and last saturday I developed a couple nasty canker sores on my tongue. My lymph nodes on my neck also got really swollen. On Sunday, the canker sores were still there and I started feeling feverish at night. I didn't sleep too well that night. On Monday I went to work and had chills and surely a fever (didn't check until I got home which confirmed mild fever). Had headaches and even a small rash on my leg. I also noticed four more smaller canker sores on my tongue (tip of the tongue) and one on the lip. So right now I'm dealing with headache, fever, tiredness, at least 8-10 canker sores on my tongue, swollen gums, swollen throat or swollen lymph nodes, and a canker sore on my lip.

My doctor says I could be getting the flu and to just ride it out. I suspect it's an oral herpes outbreak. I'm seeing a different doctor today to get a secondary opinion.

I've been treating myself with a good diet, vit c supplements, probiotic supplements, hydrogen peroxide diluted with water rinse for the sores and tylenol for the fever. I'm thinking about doing acupuncture and getting B12 supplements to see if it helps. I'll keep you guys posted.
