I have been drinking soy milk for a few years due to an intolerance to dairy products. I recently switched from regular vanilla flavored soy milk to a light version containing strevia and noticed an increase in intensity and frequency of my hot flashes. It looks as though different women can be affected differently. I am considering changing from soy milk to another non-dairy alternative such as almond milk and see if that has an effect on my hot flashes. The hot flashes and perimenopause started a few years ago but I never thought they might be associated with the soy milk until lately. When I discontinued using the strevia, I noticed an almost immediate change in my hot flashes.

I experience the same thing except it was not vanilla flavored soy milk but regular. Recently I started taking vitamins and the hot flashes began with a vengeance. I checked the label and sure enough, they contain soy too. I suspect possibly a relation between soy and thyroid function?

Soy Milk causes hot flashes for me too. Switched to Almond Milk. No problem now.

I have changed to unsweetened Almond milk and the hot flashes have dropped tremendously, BUT you also have to check out the vegetable oil, it is soy. So I have changed that also. You just need to start reading the darn labels a little closer as I have had to do and talk to your pharmacist about your prescriptions. I really hate labels! Good luck to all that are having these problems.

I've switched to almond milk and watch out for stevia. I still have hot flashes, but they are more tolerable. I also switched to canola mayonnaise instead to avoid the soy in the vegetable oil. It is so difficult to avoid soy; it's in everything! Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'm determined to not take any hormone replacement. I'm hoping that if I just wait it out a couple more years they might go away on their own. I've heard that can happen.

Be careful, Almond milk causes it also. For two months now I have been drinking Almond milk and having alwful hot flashes that I have not had in 3 years. I had a total hyst in 2008 and tried to go cold turkey, without any hormone replacement. After two months I tried the Estroven and after 4 months of that and no relief I gave in and started on Premarin. But sometime after Christmas I started to have flashes again and thought maybe got a bad batch of Premarin. I was still having the flashes and they were geting worse. I started thinking about what changed around the time  the flashes came back and realised that I added the Almond milk. I stopped drinking the Almond milk and went back to cow's milk and now a little over a week later the flashes are almost gone. So be careful, the Almond milk can cause the flashes also.

I'm a man, and I recently realised that unfermented soya had been causing me hot flushes for a number of years. I used to eat a lot of tofu and drank soya milk. I find than none of the other plant milks do this.

Tamari, miso, tempeh and fermented tofu (...) are fine.

I assume that the phytodiddledah (sorry, poor memory) reacts with other components produced during fermentation, rendering it inactive.

Soya does cause hot flashes and can cause other symptoms of estrogen dominance and even adrenal exhaustion symptoms. I recently had a big reaction to soya milk and these are the symptoms I had; it also messed up my menstrual cycles and caused itchy hives. I stopped drinking the soya immediately but at first the symptoms got worse (soya withdrawal). They went down withint a month but it took another 2 or 3 months for me to go back to normal. I think if anyone has any of these symptoms from soya it is best to stop having it immediately as they could have a soya intolerance. I went on drinking it for about a month and so that is why the symptoms got a lot worse for a while.

I thought that the soy milk would help my hot flashes! Just the opposite happened. They got much much worse and increased to about 30 a day including night sweats. I stopped drinking soy milk last week and now I am only getting 2-3 a day and only waking up 1 time during the night . I am only 45 years old but going through early menopause symptoms. I think I will drink almond milk from now on!

I don't use soy often but when I do now I notice night sweats.  I make a pumpkin pie that use 1 1/2 cups of plain soy milk. this caused night sweats each day I ate it. Going to use coconut milk next time.

i am well into menopause and rarely get night sweats. So the soy connection here was easy to see.

Reply to Leticia about soy milk causing hot flashes. Yes, yes, yes, I have been experiencing the vicious return of hot flashes which had practically stopped before I started drinking soy milk. Am going to switch to almond milk and see what happens.

I got into eating Edamame 4-5 days a week for a couple of weeks about a year ago and started getting bad flashes.  Stopped that and they went away.  Recently I started getting bad flashes and not sleeping well.  I realized this morning I had been eating Protien rich Cherrios.

When I looked at the label, saw that Soy Prtein and Soy flour were in the first 5 ingredients.  Think this may be the culprit.  No more of this cereal for me. Hope that is the answer.

I thought I was crazy because soy is supposed to help with hot flashes, but I swear they tripled for me when I started drinking soy milk! Thanks to evveryone for these posts..

I have been on a whole food plant based diet for six weeks and have lost 14 pounds. I introduced tofu in a few of my receipes this past week and noticed I started having mild hot flashes, which I thought I was over the more intense episodes for good. From what I have found out, it appears soy based products are not for me.

i am 63 and menopause is long time come and gone but find recently i have been having hot flashes only in the morning when i first get up- checked with the MD and found my thyroid is fine. then it occurred to me that i do drink more than a half gallon of Soy vanilla milk a week.. and wonder if that could be the culprit. i am going to restrain from the soy milk for the next month and see what happens..or better yet- what hopefully doesn't happen.
