I noticed some stringy type things in my poop today.  The poop was solid, but when it came out, each piece was attached to the next one with yarn like strings. They were the same color as the poop.  It looked as though I had eaten brown yarn and it was running through the poop.  I have had stomach pain and slight constipation lately... but I have IBS and my stomach always hurts and I am often constipated.  Should I be worried about this?
Probably not.

Strands of fiber from food such as lettuce, raw vegitables, and other foods can produce this type of thing.

Rarely, certain types of intestinal parasites could cause something like this but they would not generally be brown in color.

I might suggest noticing if this continues or subsides, and talking with your physician about this.

He may order a "Stool Culture for Ova and Parasites" just to be sure, or other tests, if he has doubts; but again, I would not jump to conclusions here.  Anxiety over this will only make your IBS worse, and abdominal pain is typical anyway in someone with IBS.

Take care and God Bless.

my wife was diagnosed with IBS a couple years ago..she's recently noticed on 2 separate occasions off white stringy slimy stuff in her stool... is there any vegitables she she should avoid?

This may be strings of mucus, or could be strings of fiber.

Following the dietary guidelines for IBS may help her condition. I have listed some of these guidelines below:

FOODS THAT MAY HELP:

• Eat high-fiber foods (25–35 grams per day) such as whole-grain breads and cereals; fruits;
vegetables with the skin; and dried beans, peas, and lentils. If gas is a concern, it may be helpful
to eat fewer gas-producing foods (see list below), or try Beano.™
• Bulk-forming laxatives such as Metamucil™ (psyllium husk) help regulate bowel function, easing
both constipation and diarrhea.
• Add fiber slowly to prevent gas and bloating.

FOODS THAT MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS:

• Lactose intolerance is a common problem. Try lactose-free dairy, calcium-fortified soy or rice
products, or Lactaid,® or Dairy Ease.®
• Fatty foods
• Gas-producing foods such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, corn, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic,
cucumber, onions, peppers, radishes, turnips, sauerkraut, Swiss chard, raw apples, melons, dried
beans, peas, lentils, carbonated beverages, and greasy and fatty foods.
• Hot beverages
• Caffeine: coffee, cola beverages, tea, and chocolate.
• Alcohol

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

• Eat smaller more frequent meals. Do not skip meals.
• Eat slowly in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
• Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, especially if you are eating a high-fiber diet.
• Avoid tobacco products.
• Since stress is a major contributor to IBS, it is important to manage it. Meditation, deep
breathing, aerobic exercise, and sharing your concerns with another person can all help to
decrease stress.

Good luck and God Bless.

There is a high possibility that those are intestional parasitic worms, and they were brown in color because they were covered in your faecal matter. More people have parasites than expected. About 90% of Americans have parasites and doctors often tend to ignore parasites as a possible cause for digestive problems such as constipation, gas, bloating, etc. Many people are misdiagnosed with having IBS (irritablke bowel syndrome) when in fact they are heavily infected with intestional parasites. Most general stool samples also will report falsen negative parasite results when in fact they are positive (like mine did). You should do a 3 day stool sample test which collects 3 different samples on 3 different days. it turns out I had 3 different species of parasites! These more in depth stool kits catch almost EVERYTHING. They test for over 22 different intestional worms and protozoan parasites, as well as common food allergies/sensitivities, and problems in digestive enzymes. YOU (most likely) DO NOT HAVE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, but rather some form of parasite that is causing the constipation and stomach pains. Please just get tested, and I bet all of your IBS symptoms will now have a cause and thus a solution. Doctors amalgamate all weird digestive problems as IBS and basically just say "it's uncurable but you can control it by diet etc, live with it." but you DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT. It is your health, and most likely there is a plausable cause and solution, not just "the easy way out" solution of IBS that todays doctors overuse because they don't want to do more work than they have too. Cheers.

I am going thru this right now... So frustrating and painful... I noticed oddities in my dog's stool over a year ago, but could never get the diagnosis,,, now I have the same thing going on... There ARE homeopathic and natural remedies that can help... Unfortunately it looks like you can never totally rid yourself of these parasites..

IBS is a symptoms:  The most probable cause is intestinal parasite/round worm, especially if you have strings and mucus in your poop.  Treat yourself by looking online how to get rid of round worm parasite.  It is a long process, see Andreas Kalcker's protocol, free online, and well detailed... It will be cheaper than going to your doctor and take some expensive tests that will come back negative anyway.

Try MMS, as well, in anema; it will kill a lots of bacteria in your colon that come from the feces of these parasites.  It will remove any itching, and remove the acidity and irritation of your colon, also removing any hemorroid you may have.

This is your health, don't let any doctor tell you that there is nothing you can do, and take their word for it.  Do some research and treat yourself.

I have a similar problem and found drinking water frequently (warm to be absorbed more easily)and taking acidophilus relieved the pain and decreased the constipation. Eating plain yogurt seems to help. Good luck to you.

Banana strings definitely. I had it I know for sure. Worms are white and you get a lot of itching. Plus if it is worms you would feel hungry all the time more than usual and you will also be losing weight. Regardless even if one has worms when you see it in your stool they are usually dead and your body is getting them out on its own. In situations like this don't take any medicines similar to pepto bismo or militants you will block your body from getting them out.

Just have to be careful, so many people claim parasites and suggest enemas and detox's as solutions.  I was concerned recently and got really worked up reading all these claims of roundworm parasites.  See your doctor if you are in pain, or have a serious problem.  If not, eat right, lay off the booze and get excercise and if they abnormalities don't go away then look into seeing a doctor.  This home remedy stuff is a placebo at bes and they will have your pouring coffee up your ass if you listen to them... not even joking :) lol.

your saying its banana strings?

"treat yourself".....hmmm. This is crazy. Tell me what type of home treatment will remove, hemorroids, colon acidity, and parasite feces--while getting rid of the worms at the same time. This sounds very full of 'woo'.

If she bites her nails that could lead to pin worms. If the worms are about an inch they are pin worms. But I'm not sure how big they can get. I reccomend "Miralax" it is a gentle laxative. If your wife has taken laxatives and and they didn't help that well, your wife should plenty of green veggies examples are: broccoli, lettuce, etc. it's fine if she puts dressing on it. Things she shouldn't eat are: banannas, or junk food. I Hope this helps.
