It's probably because 95% of seratonin is produced in the gut. Alcohol disrupts your gut flora and health, therefore a poor production of seratonin is the end result.

I developed the same problem. I was a light drinker as an adult, but after turning 45 my tolerance decreased very gradually until I turned 50, at which point, one drink would give me a two-day hangover. My doctor ran tests to rule out any major health issues. In my case the explanation is that I no longer produce enough of the enzymes needed to properly metabolize alcohol. This can happen with a number of enzymes, most commonly with the one that metabolizes lactose. All babies are born with the enzymes needed to metabolized lactose, but as they age, some children become lactose intolerant because they stop producing enough of the enzyme to metabolize lactose. This exact thing can happen with the enzymes that metabolize alcohol, and it can be quite sudden or rather gradual.
See a doctor to rule out any major issues that should be treated, but this is not an uncommon result of aging. It is rather frustrating but the best course of action is to stop drinking because alcohol that is not metabolized properly is toxic, which is why you feel so awful. They don't call it an intoxicant for nothing...

Wine contains yeast. Beer contains gluten

I still cannot drink alcohol without getting really sick, I think t may be due to a yeast problem but I am not sure. I saw several doctors and none of them knew what was wrong they all told me if alcohol makes you sick don drink it, which sucks :(

I have ebv too and get really sick after drinking and I looked and it could be Hodgkin's. I'm very worried.

I had this issue, finally found out I had an autoimmune disease that was destryoing my thyroid. The thyroid is your metabolism regulator. Mine would cycle for slow to fast.

ME TOO! I turn 40 and suddenly can't seem to tolerate alcohol...I went to a Christmas party, had three ounces of wine (white)...woke up 3 hours later and was violently ill, throwing up and shaking...like the flu? I am sad that my body doesn't seem to tolerate even a few glasses of wine to celebrate the holiday season.. I too have to stop drinking as it is just not worth the lack of sleep, the hangover and the shakes! If any of you find our the cause keep in touch.

I found this site it seams to explain what is happening and the Hansa Center in Wichita Kansas claims they can fix it...Not sure of the cost but you have to go to the center for 2 weeks of treatment. I don't live anywhere near there so I don't think this is an option for me. If anyone has gone through this program please let us know if it works.

Hi there

I have been reading everyones comments below and glad I am not alone! I have had severe vomiting on occasion in my twenties from alcohol. However it has got worse as I have got older. I am now 44. In July I had two beers and a vodka and was ill all the next day, vomiting to the point of bringing up bile (which has happened before), terrible headache and just feeling completely poisoned. I didn't really drink until Christmas day. I had a few glasses of champagne, then red wine. Absolutely fine the next day. Had a couple of glasses of red wine Boxing day. Absolutely fine. Had two glasses of red wine with a meal on new years eve followed by water and tea and was vomiting for two whole days after. I get and accept that I must have some sort of allergy to alcohol and I have now decided to not drink at all anymore. What baffles me and the doctors I have spoken to is the inconsistency. Sometimes I am absolutely fine! Does anyone else have this or can anyone explain it? Thanks

I also started to develop a sudden intolerance to alcohol. It really doesn't matter what kind, beer, wine or liquor, though wine is the worst. My intolerance is more of an immediate face flushing and burning sensation around my eyes. My doctors seemed perplexed but labeled it an alcohol sensitivity. I'm not a heavy drinker but enjoy a drink with friends on occasion. I also have an autoimmune disease which someone said may be related. It's just the suddenness that is perplexing.

This is what my body does, too. My doctor prescribed Xanax for anxiety, but I know in my heart it was the alcohol and sugar in my diet. It breaks my heart because I love beer. Now I can't have hardly any
