I have a few bumps on the base of my skull / top of my neck.  One of them is large and the others are small.  They are quit painful and swollen  and have been there for a week or so.  What could this be?  Should I see a doctor about it?

Hi Jennifer,

There are three occipital nodes in the back of your head. They tend to get swollen only if there is some infection in the body. And when these nodes get swollen the infection us located somewhere on your scalp. Infections can viral or bacterial, and even fungal.  Fungal infections are very complicated and they might even cause hair loss. In order to know what is causing the infection you will need to run some tests. After you know the source of the infection, you can then easily start with the treatment. When the treatment is all done, you will notice that the occipital nodes are returned to their normal size and that you won’t have any more problems with them.
