I have hyperthyroid with graves and opthamology of the eyes. I have been taking methamozole for the past 10 years. I had 10 radiation treatments on each eye and took massive doses of steriods for several months. I also took propranal and alapuranal. (Probably spelling all of these medications wrong.) I took 100 milligrams of prednisone, (steriods). Because of all of this, my vision changed and I now wear sun glasses even on cloudy days. I was told that 99% of the people with any type of thyrod condition could not identify with my situation. I was also told that I could not ever have the thyroid ablasion because it would make my eyes worse. I also am hyper sensitive to medications. Now I have questionable nodules on my thyroid. I am doing a 2 day scan next week to see if the nodules are "hot" or "cold". My doctor wants me to have the entire thyroid removed with a follow-up ablasion. I am concerned that the consequences to my eyes will be disasterous. Anyone out there have the same situation? What happened to you?

During my yearly check up in 12/08, my family doctor discovered a lump on my thyroid. I was sent for blood tests which came up normal. My doctor sent me for an ultrasound which showed that I had a nodule 4.9 cm. on the right side. After going to a endocrinologist, a fine needle biopsy came out inconclusive with follicullar neoplasm. It could or could not mean cancer. A total removal of the thyroid was recommended.
My thyroid surgery was on March 17, 2009. I came home the next day. I got the great news two days later that my thyroid was totally benign although it was three times the usual size.
I can honestly say recovery wasn't as bad a I thought it was going to be. Each day is better than the previous one. My sore throat is gone and I was able to sleep on my side the first night I got home. Yes, my incision was a little sore, but I'm a side sleeper and I was able to sleep on my side. I'm still sore along the outside of my neck, but I can move my head side-to-side. My voice has not been affected and yes, I can raise my voice fairly loudly.
Even though my parathyroid was left in, my calcium level is low. I was told that sometimes it is shocked, not literally, and it needs time to come back. I am taking TUMS with calcium two times a day right now.
I will see my endocrinologist five days. We'll talk about thyroid meds then. The most important things I can tell you is get the best doctors you can and be positive; know this is the course of medical therapy for you.

I had my total removal of my thyroid on 3/18. So far the pain recovery has been fine. Minimal pain. Although the back of neck gets sore and achy...I haven't tried medication because it usually after a long day... Also I just go over crashing in the middle of the day.. I would wake up to get my Kids ready for school with a cup of coffee and it would keep me going up until about 4:30pm is where I would have to literally sleep.. Either I sleep willingfully or my body would give out not matter where I am.. Literally not matter where I am...
I was napping for about 2 hrs in the evening.. It got go a point where I was taking Red Bull the energy drink to be able to make it through the rest of the evening.. This tiredness was robbing me from cooking dinner for the kids, spending time with them and completing homework because I HAD TO SLEEP.. Since I have been over that I still get sluggish daily.. I have to push myself to do somethings.. I know I do get depress because I can't do my normal routine.. I get extremely cold.. I think that I m dying because I get bone chilling cold through my whole body.. I have several blanket for these episodes.. This happens nightly.. I still take the calicum.. They dr wanted me to take 2tab otc..4x's daily but I take between 4-8 chocolate calcium depending on my body.. If my lip starts to tingle...
I WANT MY BODY BACK..My voice.. OMG. I can't speak for long periods of time... I have trouble major trouble breathing like I can't get enough air in.... It is horrible plus I have anxiety.. A lack of oxygen and anxiety doesn't mix lol...I can't scream, sing or say a full sentence without taking several breaths.. I have not been back to the follow up appt..I have not lost any weigh.. I can sure stand to lose some. My steri strips have not fallen off yet...I am prayerful that this will work out.. I will keep you all in prayer for a speedy recovery...
What I have been doing is keeping fresh colorful flowers in my home weekly.. If I have nothing else I have beautiful flowers..... I keep them especially in the bedroom because at times I don't want to get out of bed.....This truly does help.. My husband has been supportive and my kids ask me daily about me getting better...

On December 11th 2008 I had a total thyroidectomy. I still feel lousy, I am fatter than I have ever been, tired most days and achy all of the time.
I am taking125mg, thinking it may not be enough.
Does it ever get better?

I have been battling Graves for 3 years, I have been off the Methamazole since August of last year because levels have turned normal. It had been 6 months since I had seem me Doctor and she did a Ultrasound of my Thyroid this visit because I was complaining of my Thyroid growing. I have many nodules that have grown or changed or appeared and we discussed the options I now have to address them. Iodine Treatment or Removal. After this time I think I am opting for removal and am scheduled to meet a surgeon Monday the 27th. All they symptoms described on this sight people talk about after surgery I have had all during this disease. I was hopeful that I would feel better after and as I research I find I may have a life time of feeling awful. This is not hopeful for me. I am so tired of feeling sad.

Be proactive, see an endocrinologist (? spelling). I personally went to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) physician because I did not know about an endo... until after the fact.
I had a total thyroid removal (Emory in Snellville Ga.) on 5/6 and I returned to work on 5/18. All is well. I get tired earlier in the evening than usual and by the middle of the day, my voice is gone. I haven't experienced any drastic side effects. My advice is that you pray and believe that God will take care of you during the procedure and your recovery.
I detected a lump in my throat on my own. My youngest son was 5years old when I found the lump. Because I struggled with getting strept throat, I really didn't pay it any attention. I thought it was just a swollen gland. After some time (months), it never went away so I finally decided to get it checked out. I am sure I waited to long, but thank God all is well with me. I too will post another update in a few months. But I know that everything will be fine then too.

I also had my thyroid removed w/my lymph notes they were cancerous, i did feel lousy for about 3 weeks after the surgery, (tired, depressed, weak, i felt dazed and empty inside) also very angry w/my doctors i had complained for over 1yr of painful lumps on the side of my neck they kept telling me it was from MONO, i took it upon my self to go see a specialist and after i had a biopsy done it was thryoid cancer, and it was after the surger when my results came back is when i found out it had spread to the lymph notes. i'm still scared its not until you do the radioactive treament they do a full body scan so who knows if it has spread more soon i'll know and i'm never going back to my primary care phys again... back to feeling crappy: i thought it was going to be like that forever, but it does slowly get better, i find getting a good night sleep works for me, i recommend you take a good 2 full weeks after the surgery, don't push yourself to much, your body needs to heal and so does your mind. I still have to do the radioactive iodine treatment should be soon... But i too thought i would never feel right again, and i'm getting there. Just stay positive.

I'm 30yrs old and i've had overactive thyroid (graves disease) for about 4 years now. More recently my glands have swollen up so much that my i'm on 8 pills of 5mg Neo-Merrcazole. The doc has also recommenced that i get the glands totally removed or take radioactive iodine tablet.
I've been ready up about these prcedures and i'm confused as to what i should do... I don't know what the ramifications will be...
I've heard 1 good feadback from a friends - friend who say it was the best thing she ever did she feels great. But i've heard many people say DON'T DO IT because there are so many sid affect like weight gain, depression, mood swings etc...
Is there any one out there that has a good/successful removal of there glands? I would love to hear from you!
Or if you've had them removed, went through the sid affect but got over them and now getting on with like and loving it...
Please write, let me know there is hope out there!!!
thanks

hello,
im 30 yrs old and had a very serious case of graves hyperthyroidism. i wasnt able to take the meds because of adverse reactions. i was in the 1% of people that have adverse reactions. well i had my thryoid completely removed and i feel great!! it will be 4 wks wed. i took it easy the first 2 wks and havent look back. im back to doing regular excercise even recently went to an amusemnt park. yes im concerned about the weight gain. my dr advised me to REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT I EAT! when the graves was at its worse about a month before the surgery i felt that i could barely function. extremely hight heart rate 120-140- and blood pressure. my anxiety levels were through the roof. i ddint realize how bad i was feeling til about a week after the surgery. if you dont want to op for the radioactive iodine then maybe surgery is the way to go.
best of luck.

I too was one that have graves disease (hyperthyroidism) and had very adverse reactions to the meds. Opted not to have the radiation for feel of my small children and no family to help with recovery. I did the total thyroidectomy in 2008. Right after procedure not sure if related my bp shot up uncontrollable for the next 20 hours. Finally down to a managable level and the ent dr came in to see me and said I should be able to talk was only able to whisper and only lightly at that. He was shocked at how much brusing I had and for the next 6 weeks. I still to this day can not raise my voice or sing high like before. Not that I was a great singer but you know what I mean my voice is difinitely not the same. My weight shot up also gaining 40 lbs. As far as the procedure itself because of how out of control my body was with the graves I feel great. But still tired at the end of the day body and voice. I feel like im straining to talk always with muscle aches in my neck constantly.
