I have read eveyone's posts, and I am now terrified. I went to my DOC in Jan because of a pain in my neck, she felt a small lump and decided to send me for some tests, I have had ultrasounds, sonagrams, and a fine needle byposy, the byopsy was inconclusive, my DOC says he doesn.t believe I have cancer, but can't really be positive, the ENDO want's to remove the whole thyroid, even though they only found a nodule on the left side, the ride side is fine, blood tests reads that thyroid is functioning normal. I have a few symptoms, they are some breathing difficulties, neck pain at times, and palpatations, a little fatigue, gained some weight, but love sweets, so weight could come from that. My DOC wants to schedule my surgery for May 24th, but I'm not sure I can through with it after reading the posts. I welcome any and all advise, trying to weight all my options before going through with the surgery.

Thanks everyone!!

hi th ere, i just went thru thyroid surgery this year twice.. i had my biopsy in dec/09 and it came back benign and was told there was only a 5% chance of it being cancer after they removed and retested.. and well i fell into that 5% and had to have the other half removed . first surgery was feb/10 ,,, 2nd was in may 2010, but im glad that i had decided to have it removed even tho i could of left hte lumps in cuz it had came back benign the first time.. but i dont like the fact that any lumps are in me so i had it removed and glad i did cuz it turned out to be cancer.. so now im just waiting to do another scan and then do radiation idione treatment.. but i know the problems u are having i had the same thing but the one tumor by 1st surgery had grown to be almost 4 inches and was pressing my windpipe and making breathing hard.. but the surgery itself was pretty good to deal with after :) i wish u all the best

Just had my Thyroid out on the 14th July due to 4 large Nodules (non cancer - WHEW!!!!!) and I have the Dizzy feeling my self. My thyroid never has worked been on Synthroid all my life.

I guess this seems to be a fairly common after effect of the procedure according to the posts. Has anyone determined how long this lasts???

Hi, you'll be on meds. I just had a "softball" size taken out. It hurt me for a day and a half and I took myself off pain meds. I just had mine done a little over 3 weeks ago, the medical tape and "tender to the touch" is still there. My doctor told me to let the med tape fall off and keep it clean. I was scared more of the dr's than the surgery. You'll be fine.

I had all my thyroid removed in feb 2010, and I feel worse than before, I feel as though it hasn't even been removed, it feels like I have a lump in my throat and a needle poking it at intervals, I have headaches constantly a tingling in the back of my neck, weight gain and cold all the time, I am on thyroxine and calcium tabs. I have told the Doctor this but all he did was increase my dosage which has made it worse. But the operation was a breeze and got over it pretty much straight away, I wish I could say that for the after effects of the removal of my thyroid, the problems just go on and on.................................. %-)

I had my thyroid removed during parathyroid surgery. The doctor never told me that this was even a possiblity. I feel horrible. Can barely keep my eyes open at time. Then when it is time to go to bed I can't sleep. I am alway cold, my hair is falling out. Simply exhausted. And to think there was nothing wrong with my thyroid--the doctor thought my parathyroids might have been attached to the back side of my thyroids. Guess what.....they weren't.

I had a full thyroidectomy 1/28/08. Over 100 small cancerous nodules (papillary carcinoma) were removed. Surgery was really hard and took several months to recover. I had no voice for about 4 months and a lot of pain, but the worst was yet to come. The I-131 radioactive iodine treatments to destroy the rest of the cancer has caused a lot of damage. Side effects include dry alligator-spotted skin, dry mouth (it effected salivary glands), tremendous hair loss, fatique, headaches, foggy brain function. Some symtoms could also be a result of having no thyroid. The replacement hormone Levoxyl helps, but isn't like mother nature. Weight problems are awful - it just seems like there's no hope. Total removal of the thryroid messes you up, and the follow up treatments for cancer causes you to be extremely unhealthy. Along with feeling generally miserable, you catch every cold, flu or anything that comes along. After two years I'm still trying to regain my health and lose weight. :-(

Hi, I had a total thyroid removal at the end of May 2010. The surgery went fine, not too much discomfort and I started to feel well again after a few days. However, as time has gone on, I am feeling worse and worse. Have had my medication amount changed a few times but still feel terrible. I feel depressed, anxious, aching joints, dizziness, lethargic, can't sleep properly, I could go on and on. I have gone from just under 11 stone, to almost 13 - from a size 12 to a size 16 in a year. I don't have a big appetite and watch what I eat but I cannot lose weight, no matter how hard I try. I have my blood done every month and it goes up and down - I am slowly beginning to lose heart. I am 56 years old and had to have a full removal as a nodule was hard and not responding to treatment and they thought it was cancer, even though tests and biopsys proved inconclusive.Of everything that is happening to me, the weight gain is the hardest to come to terms with. I enjoy wearing trendy clothes but cannot any more and don't actually see a light at the end of the tunnel. So I know how some of you feel! Sharpar
