Hi. I had bowel surgery first when I was 16. Poorly for a few years before and was mis diagnosed. They removed my appendix. Turns out my appendix wasn't the problem and made matters worse and was taken back to hospital 2 days later. I laid in bed wasting away and after quite a while they took me into theatre to open me up and have a look.I returned from surgery having had a 7 hour op, blood transfusions, they found 4 abscesses, a hole in the bowel, removed majority of my colon and quite a lot of the small bowel, an illeostomy and a vertical scar from above my belly button to as far down as a scar could possibly go. The scar took a long time to heal due to infection. This long scar was not only long, it was 2 inches wide. After about a year I went in for stoma reversal. I came back from surgery without a stoma and the surgeon had neatened the scar for me. This time around the wound healed just fine without any infection. My stomach, no matter how thin I was never looked great. After 4 ops in total my stomach looks like a patchwork quilt. I guess after cutting through the same muscles twice it wasn't going to be great. Since then (I am now 36) I have always had what I call 'a front bum' . the more weight I put on the worse it looks. I don't do much exercise and don't see much point as I will never have a washboard stomach! As far as I know this is just something we have to live with. I know of nothing that can help this. If you do, let me know!

I know your post was a year ago. But I too look horrible compared to how I used to look! Try not to let it get you down!! I thank GOD I don't have that bag!! Beauty is only skin deep. My family still loves me & that's what's important ❤️ They still tell me I'm beautiful. I once heard someone say, picture in your mind how you wanna look. Then walk around as if you look that way. That's what I do

After 1 year and 8 months of my colon resection, I finally saw a plastic surgeon. He first ruled out the possibility of incisional hernia. He can fix my abdomen so it will be flat again (my BMI is only 17.5). But he also mentioned that my insurance company might not cover it. I met my coinsurance this year.
I also feel delayed soreness or numbing pain after the doctors pressed my abdomen or after I wear my normal pants or leggings for a few minutes. The pain can last over an hour. I was told to see my colorectal surgeon b/c the pain might be caused by adhesions.
I don't know if I would want to go through another abdominal surgery but I really dislike my distended abdomen......
I'm 5'8 and weigh 115 lb. I used to look great in most clothes. Now I have problem finding clothes to wear... always have to cover up my puffy abdomen. Not to mention the strange soreness or numbing pain.

My surgery was in July 2008 for a right colectomy and 20 inches removed and, today( I am now 82) things are almost back to normal. I have always been very active but like you, the extended abdomen was a real concern. Yep, clothes are an issue but, so far no one has been crude enough to say anything so perhaps the issue is the eyes of the beholder (oneself). Today about the only thing I cannot do is hold the rapid tuck to use the springboard as I did before but now, if the only thing I cannot do is do the water entry from a diving board, such is a minor inconvenience. To an extent I had much the same sensation in the earlier time after the surgery. I do hope I have given you a little insight and hope. Sincerely Peter

same exact thing happened to me the end of June. it's early August now and I'm still recovering but I see that my right side of my stomach is raised higher than the other. my incision is still closing with the wet/dry dressing but I don't think it will even out. Any updates on your recovery?

I had the right ascending colon (10 inches) removed due to colon cancer in 2013 and, I am sorry to say, I have exactly the same distended abdomen that never goes away AND bloating any time I eat. Nothing seems to have helped and doctors keep telling me to give it time. So depressing.

a note to the above regarding colon surgery for cancer. I have also had bilateral radical mastectomies so there are no breasts to help appearance. Just flat chest and then huge distended abdomen. If anyone reads this and has found something that helps, please let me know..

I had a colectomy 2 months ago. The bulge around the incision site has gotten larger. Diagnosed as an incision site hernia. Fairly common. The only way to fix it is another surgery.

Nothing can be done...my colon Resection was in 2014 and my stomach is awfully big. I was told that it will never change...I cried like a baby. Although I'm happy to be alive, it's very depressing. Not to mention the terrible gas!!
