Try taking Benadryl before you eat. If it helps, you may have an allergy. Go to an allergist. You may need to carry epi-pens with you. It could save your life. For the guy without insurance, you can buy benadryl store brand cheap anywhere. It can make you drowsy, so may sure when you try it that you are in a situation like operating dangerous equipment or where you must be very alert.

ive been to sooo many specialist and er visits because of it. it feels like its closing up all the time.
they seem to think it is acid reflux, allergies, and asthma. at first they thought it was anxiety but deep down i know its not. but OF COURSE im going to be anxious when it tightens. who wouldnt be?
:'(
im starting to take my medicine like i should but i forget sometimes. hopefully once i start taking it like i should things will get better.
as bad as this sounds im glad to know that others have this as well and im not the only one.

I have read this post all the way to 2008!

I had a serious throat infection 4 years ago, once i got over it i got a scratchy feeling in my throat that didn't go away??! - according to the books and my doc it was probably reflux (??)

After the throat infection i noticed a tightening in my throat, i did have a history of anxiety (that stopped and my doc also talked about a spasm) - a few weeks ago i started feeling this small lump and the stretching got a little worst (i can breath easily and swallow but sometimes it feels like i have something that is stuck in my throat), i'm 100% healthy and now i realize that a mix of stress and reflux is the reason, there are ways to beat it, so many people have it and yet its not a well known situation.

I feel much better now that I see other people have this problem. I have just begun to notice this myself. I am in my thirties and have noticed that I now am allergic to most perfumes and scents..my throat gets tights and I get a headache. If I am by a bond fire too long my throat get tight and I need to get some air. I also notice that if I am in a warm place and open the window to let colder air come in my throat swells. So, its very sensitive..

However, my throat swells up for other reasons such as stress. When a stressful situation is out of the way it starts to feel better. I also get throat swelling with rainy days. I have only been to one doctor and they said it was environmental allergies or acid reflux..I am not sure myself. I know that heat makes it harder to breathe.

I'd like to find out things you can do or take so you can breathe better or maybe find out if I actually have a condition. I really don't have acid reflux and I don't feel I have allergies. I have never had a sinus infection. Antihistamines make it feel much better but not make your throat dryer than before and this ultimately feels worse.

If anyone has any advice, this would be appreciated.

Hi! I have found these posts quite helpful. About 2 weeks ago I began to feel swelling in my throat, I panicked and thought the worst because it felt horrible. My mom thought it was anxiety because she didn't understand it when I said my throat felt "tight"... I went to the ER and a doctor gave me a prescription for Zantac. I had no idea what acid reflux had to do with my throat but after some research I now understand a bit better. I've been taking it for about a week and a half now and I still feel the same swelling, and lump in my throat as before.
In the begining we thought it was an allergic reaction to something I ate but shouldn't have . Do you think that has something to do with it? Now I am terribly scared of eating something and getting a bad reaction to it... After every meal and drink I feel the swelling tighter than before and that sends me back into a panic. How do I stop that? I am currently uninsured so seeing a doctor will have to wait just a while longer. Hopefully the pills will start to help some time soon, I really don't like feeling this way. :(

how can you not worry when you feel the way you do

I guess people that have never had this feeling just don't understand how truly awful it is. I know I constantly feel that at any moment my throat is gonna swell to the point where I can't beath anymore, and i find it very hard not to worry about that.
i got the same problem i went for a scope but that didnt help then they said its an allergy but im taking allergy tablet that also doesnt help so please if you find and answer let me know and if i find and answer ill let you know

Well, I am glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem. I have dealt with this for years. About 10 years ago, I started having this swelling in my throat and because I have asthma, I assumed it was allergy related. I had an ultrasound of my thyroid which was normal and an endoscopy which was normal. I usually find that this is more of a problem when my weight fluctuates upward. In the past few months I have began to have this problem again. It went away for a few years. I have been to every doctor under the sun and no one seems to understand hos awful this feeling is and quite frankly, I'm not sure any of them know. It isn't thyroid, it isn't gastro related and every blood test comes back normal. If it were anxiety, wouldn't a Xanax help? It doesn't. It seems the only time I don't have this is right upon waking in the morning, but within 2 hours, it is swollen. I am so tired of trying to figure out what it is, i.e., allergies, medications, stress, foods, etc. I am scheduled for allergy testing (AGAIN) in August. But maybe if we can all get together and figure out one "constant" that we all have in common, we can try to help each other out because the medical community doesn't seem to have a clue. At least now I know I am not alone XD

Hello all, It is truly a relief to find I am not the only one with such problems! I have been to my GP 3 or 4 times while waiting to see my ENT doc due to neck discomfort (kind of a full feeling) in addition to this "lump" that I feel in my throat. I have seen two GP's, an Urgent Car Doc, and finally an ENT doc who all insist that it is all mental related to anxiety. I do admit I have anxiety issues but I am now stuck in a dreaded cycle where I worry and then my symptoms are exacerbated and then I worry some more. At this point I am set up to have a CT of the neck done and am waiting to schedule either a barium swallow study or a video fluoroscopy of my throat. I worry that everything is pointing to cancer. I am a 26 female (at one time a smoker) and enjoy my occasional nights out with a few cocktails. I know that both substances are carcinogenic and worry that they may have taken a toll on my life. I am terrified of the outcomes as I have an 8 year old daughter and I cannot help but to expect the worse... I am hoping it is just the instance of finding my anatomy due to being a nursing student, but I can't help but wonder. I will keep all posted and let you know as soon as I find out. Thank you to everyone. God Speed. Le

Yup, I just started having this problem, too, about 2 weeks now. I think it's the heat as I was heat sensitive as a child. In my mid thirties. Feels awful, like it could get worse all of a sudden. Just a swollen feeling in my throat. We've had 90+ degree days for maybe a month or more now. I feel better reading from those of you who went to a doctor and complained and some related it to acid. I also experienced some stress and some stomach pains probably related to acid recently, so stress and heat may have something to do with it.

I'm not sure if my symptoms match up to yours, but last June i started getting sick, with my throat swelling up. im a 19 yr old female, and yet i was developing what looked like an Adams apple in my throat. my parents and i began getting scared, all thinking there was something wrong with my thyroid, but it ended up being mono. the infection was causing my throat to swell, even tho i didn't have and other symptoms of the virus. so if nothing else, try getting that checked out. i know mono is usually a teen disease, but adults do get it as well, its worth a shot =)

It's nice to know there are people out there with these same symptoms, and I've had these symptoms for a year, last year I spent a couple of thousand on dr bills. The family dr didn't see anything wrong with my neck or my tongue. They did blood work and said my white blood cell was high so they sent me to a hemotologist, which sent me to ENT, then from there, cat scans, more blood work, prednisone, priolesec, prevacid, then a gasternologist, because they said it was gerds, Then I had to wear a nose tube down my throat for 24 hrs, That was pure hell. My acidic range was normal. I started taking Body balance which is a nutrional whole food, it seemed to help even though it had citric acid in it and it seemed like I couldn't eat anything with citris in it including sodium citrate without my throat closing up. I was doing fine until recently, at work, my sinuses clogged right up and everytime I try to breathe, my throat contricted and my neck was swelling. then it way and started again today, that's how I stumbled upon this site. I've never been to an allergist, apparently there is only one in Lancaster, PA. So even if I try to see him it'll probably be 6 mos at the most to get in.

So if anybody out there had similar experience with their sinuses clogging up and their throat constricting if you found away to stop that please let me know.

Thanks.

Hello. I recently had an EGD (tube down esophagus test) after having a sharp constant pain sensation, that also seemed to travel its way to my stomach, and then became a different sort of pain. Anyway, the doctors said I have a rare esophageal disease called Eosinophilic Esophegitits, which is basically and imflamation of the esophagus due to an allergy(s)

So, the doctor prescribed me Flovent. It looks like an inhaler, but I supposed to swallow the fluid. The medication has a steroid in it that apparently is supposed to act as an anti-inflammatory.

Anyways, i've been using Flovent for almost two weeks now. I haven't noticed my original problem getting much better. But instead on top of that, i'm getting the tight throat sensation like many of you are describing. I'm afraid that this drug, Flovent may be causing this. Although i've only experienced this swollen throat sensation for about 3 days, reoccurring.

It is an extremely frighting feeling. It is only on one side, it feels like its pushing in towards my windpipe from the left side. or as if its swelling and pushing inward. I wouldn't describe the sensation as pain, but it certainly is frightening. Also i'm someone who has regular anxiety and sometimes even panic episodes, so something like this is ten times worse for someone like me than the average person.

At least it's a bit comforting to know i'm not the only one. I was feeling a bout of anxiety coming on tonight so i decided its time to look this up. Knowing other people are going through this and it probably isn't something serious, or god forbid, life threatening puts me at ease even though the sensation is still with me.

If anybody discovers any remedy's for this, let me know. I'm not sure but cold water and/or an ice towel giving a few rubs on my neck where i feel the swelling is seems to help a bit. Also, strangely enough, cough drops.

Take care everyone/
