As always, the golden rule is to see your doctor rather than making self diagnosis.

I too have been suffering from many of the symptoms described in this post. I feel a minor swelling in the throat that fluctuates in severity throughout the day. There are certain foods that seem to trigger a reaction. Fruit juice (though I can't nail down any particular fruits) is the first food that I noticed a reaction to. However, eliminating that from my diet hasn't resolved the issue. I always feel better in the morning after sleeping. Another thing that relieves my symptoms to a degree is using a Waterpik. I set it to the lowest pressure setting and rinse the back of my mouth. It triggers my gag reflex, but it seems to give me some relief.

Like many posters in the thread, I have an otherwise clean bill of health. I'm 31 years old, no previously known allergies, non-smoker, no soda, no fast food, regular exercise, moderate alcohol use, good vital signs and no medications. I also think of myself as a low-stress person. I have a hard time believing that stress or anxiety is the root of this problem.

I think I will try eliminating gluten from my diet for a while to see if that helps. I'm a contract employee, and if my contract is extended, I may invest in an air purifier (I suspect there is mold in my apartment). I believe that my lymph nodes are affected by this disorder, and I think I will add a thyroid-health supplement to my daily dose of vitamins and other dietary supplements.

This topic has been eye-opening for me, and I'm grateful to all those who have shared their stories. If I find any solution that works for me, I'll be sure to post it here.

It was nice to read that I am not the only one with this problem. I have had this happen once a year for the past 3 years and it lasts for around 3 weeks, sometimes more. It freaks me out while it is happening. Right now I think I am getting the flue and dealing with this. A few things that can cause the swelling for some of you:
1. as mentioned, acid reflux. You might have to take something for a little bit to see a difference.
2. Post Nasal Drip: where I live there is a higher incidence and basically your body produces mucus because of an irritant and it slides down the back of your throat. You can get a something called flonase (not sure about spelling)
3. If you have a hardened lump (much like a lymph node) under your jaw it may be a blockage to the salivary glands. Stones can form in these glands and block the release of saliva and cause inflammation that presses on your throat.
4.allergies: These are annoying and difficult to deal with sometimes:(
5. swollen lymph nodes. Any number of things can cause this to be an issue, flue, immune disorder, etc.
I would be very interested in finding out what other peoples fitness levels are. I know mine tends to be much more noticeable when I am sitting around all day. When I exercise or keep busy it seems to make difference.

I have had this off and on for years.
Try an allergy medicine, even a decongestant helps. It appears it is due to Post nasal drip from allergies. Doctors did not diagnose this, I had to figure this out on my own, thru trial and error.

Hello Folks-
I have had the problem we all seem to be describing, for about three years now, off and on. My condition is more a tightness in the throat
making it hard to completely swallow. I joined this group to discuss with you, the condition and its solution or solutions. One thing that makes
it swell up every time is second hand smoke. I suspect that second hand smoke is not the only cause, only that it aggravates the situation caused
by something else. I started studying the problem closely two years ago. My research has led me to a few areas that I would like to mention as
possible culprits. Since my doctor gave me a clean bill of health, after I described the problem and ordered related tests after two physicals, I started looking into anything that may be a cause of irritation which has a latent nature and doesn't respond readily to what I drink or eat or my environment. Food allergies seemed to fit the symptom set because they can behave this way, with symptoms lingering weeks after encountering a food which I may or may not have been able to tolerate in the past. So I "trust" the food and have become unaware of becoming allergic to it
over time, and keep exposing myself. Gluten for example, it is everywhere. I do, however, have a musty basement and suspect some involvement of mold spores, which I once tolerated but may now have trouble with. These two things are certain, second hand smoke brings it on, and a long road trip up North to New Hampshire and Canada made the symptoms disappear; however, when I drove down into the valley
where my home city of Nashville is located, I felt that familiar twinge of reaction. And the swelling resumed. I want to encourage anyone working on this problem to keep it up, you are not alone. You may want to try any of these three suggestions: Web search, "Immunolabs"
which specializes in food allergy assay tests. They work through your family doctor and only do business with practicing MD's. Perhaps look into
your colon health, and get on a psyllium husk regimen which can only help clean the colon of lingering foods that may be allergens. And finally,
take a month to relax and wind down in a place that has no mold, in my case, way up North away from big cities. If I achieve success, I'll share it here. Good Luck.

I'm pleased to announce that I have discovered a possible fix for the throat swelling. When flossing my teeth, I discovered some bad bacteria below the gum line. I held some hydrogen peroxide in my mouth for 30 seconds and gargled it some. By the next day, the swelling had drastically decreased. This is the only remedy I've seen so far that has a definite effect on this condition, so, as promised, I share the details here. Cheers!

Not for the overall swelling, but for some people who feel they have a "lump in the throat" or like the food doesn't ever totally go down: consider having a videofluoroscopy (modified barium swallow) and make sure you have a swallow specialist (speech-language pathologist) on hand. And make sure they do it from both the side AND the front (or back). It could be a hernia - a little ballooned-out pocket in the throat - where the food sort of gets trapped, and either leaves more slowly (when lying down makes sense) or sometimes not at all. Can be fixed.

I'm not a professional - I'm just a student - but we've seen this in class and it does make sense to cover all your bases.

Hi, i am 18 years old, i am a wrestler for my high school team. I cut weight as does every other wrestler i know. But they don't get sick like i do. I don't loose to much weight every week and i am a very healthy eater. But i have been getting sore throats every year since 3 years ago. I would go to the doctor and they would say i have strep throat and they would give me penicillin, but then it came to the point to where once i was done with the prescription, the sore throat would come back. I would say they have diagnosed me with strep throat 15 times within 4 years. They bumped me up to 1000 mg of augmentin, and i would be fine for a week then the sore throat would come back. recently i have been getting sore throats only on one side. My lyphnotes would swell up also. and while i am wrestling i always seem to have a shortness of breath. However the sore throat would go away and then flare up the other side of my throat so it would just be an alternating cycle of pain each week. It feels like swallowing nails. As of recently I don't have insurance right now, and i don't know what i should do? If this seems like a serious problem or not? Please help!

I'm not an M.D. nor do I claim to know much.. but would like to suggest some possibilities based on my experience. You're an athlete, and keep getting strep, I assume they keep finding strep in your throat. Maybe, you're re-infecting somehow related to your workouts, or you're immune system is getting weak enough to allow the re-infection. Do you still have your tonsils, or could they harbor this strep somehow? I have seen a food allergy cause an inflammation, which allows the infection to take hold on inflamed tissues with low circulation (because of the inflammation)...when I had this, I would gargle with peroxide and the symptoms would fade away, but not the cause. I was blaming an infection because it was the readily visible part. The upset was started by a food allergy, in my case it turned out to be a moderate lactose (milk and dairy) allergy. I did two things, I quit dairy after studying the throat swelling thing for a long time, and began taking one heaping teaspoon of organic kelp powder and one heaping teaspoon of chlorella powder in water every day. My whole body runs much better now with no mysterious symptoms. The kelp is a blood alkalyzer and wonderful supplement, and the chlorella boosts the immune system, both are worth studying up on and taking regularly. My dose is very high by most people's standards. But dig in and find out now, if you have food allergies. Try the book, "eat right for your blood type" for hints on foods you may not tolerate. Hang in there

Hi found this site when my wife felt like a lot of people on this site. Her final diagnosis after having an endoscopy and a feesst (flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory testing) discovered she had a hiatal hernia and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Symptoms of LPR include chronic clearing of throat, the sensation of mucus in throat, a sticking and/or lump like sensation in throat, coughing episode, hoarseness and/or changes in voice quality, choking episodes, even difficulty with swallow, soar taste, bad breath, and nausea. She is taking adopted prescribed by gastrointerologist. Seems to be helping. She is almost back to herself and has a followup with gastro in 1 week. I hope this helps all of you every single one!
