I've had a choking sensation that makes me gag for over two years now. I have anxiety and depression but I think these are caused by having this throat feeling and appeared afterwards. it prevents me from living my life Like I used to. I feel very secluded and do not want to go out much.. from fear of gagging infront of people...this feeling occured two weeks after I got my braces off.. I feel like the Blue inhaler (I forget the medical name for it) helps with this feeling some days better than others.. also I have acid reflux and am on nexium and teva-domperidome.. they help some days better than others also... It's so surprising, the amount of forums I see with people having the same problem and get almost brushed off by every doctor they see. I've been to an ENT, respirologist, ultrasound,.. anyway it's been a life changing experience and I hope to get this taken care of or I don't know what is going to happen to me..

Hello everyone,

To all of you who have tightness in their throats. I have a solution for you all. You should have an endocronologist test your thyroid function by a "free t4, and free t3" tests and should do a 24hour test of your ph level. I have had this for 2.5 years to the point that I couldnt eat or swollow anything. I have seen all the specialists you can think of including lymphoma cancer. I hate the modern medicine's approch to treating a patient. I see the doctors as shopkeepers who just want to sell their product without thinking whether the buyer needs it or not. So for two and half years, the doctors gave me all the prednisone they could give me and I have been on it constantly. I couldnt recognize my face in the mirror due to horrible side effects of it. My period got abnormal, I lost hair on my head and got increased unwanted hair like a teddy bear, and I had horrible constipation and no sleep at all. I also received infusions to suppress my immune system and got many different steriods. So finally, my doctor said she doesnt know what else to do and that is when I suggested to her if I can take any herbal medicine. She said I am happy to test anything to give you comfort. So I went on a quest to find herbal medications and many of them failed miserablly. I finally met with a naturalist who told me that it might be my thyroid function and I said I already tested for it. She said, the doctors dont do this test for ppl, but you should request it yourself. There is also a sliva test that I dont remember the name right now. so once the free t4 and t3 rulled thyroid problems for me, I was left alone again with tightness and when I told my doctor, she said she didnt know what it was. I also had muscle pain and fever. Finally, my mom went back to south Asia and brought a herb (called anis star) that helped me with pain. That gave me hope, so I went to another naturalist and she gave me curcumin pills, magnisum complex, and dandlion for pain and inflammation. She thought the tightness in my throat might go away, but once my pain and swelling got under control, I still was left with tightness in throat and was only eating rice soups and milk. I never stopped searching online and in books about herbal medicines. Finally, I heard of GERD and the easiest way that I have managed to control the tightness and swelling in my throat is by changing the way I sleep and drinking one tablespoon of oreganic apple cider vinegar with one large glass of water twice a day. I sleep as if I am half sitting. They say your head has to stay up by 30 %, so I put two pillows slightly leaned and put another very small pillow under my neck. I also continue the anise star tea and dandlion tea to get rid of excess water and toxins that the medications put in me. I finally got myself out of horrible prednisone and 6 extra strength tylanol I was taking everyday. So guys, dont lose hope. 1) do the free t4 free t3 test, do the sliva test to rule out thyroid problems, then 2) start sleeping with your head raised up so that acids from your stomach doesnt come up to your throat, and 3) find an herbal medicine that flushes out extra fluid and toxins out of your system. You will see improvements when you take control of your illness yourself. I am very disappointed of the modern medicine. BY now I know that they prescribe the same prednisone and metotrexate for all non-explainable diseases that they fail to diagnose. I am not going to a hospital to get diagnosed for GERD because my natural approach is already helping me. I have had it enough with doctors!!!!

Hi everyone.  I have had a horrible experience with my throat closing up to the point where my saliva is very thick and would have to basically spit it out.  I would know this was coming because I would get very hot.  Sometimes with hives or swollen lymph nodes.  I finally had heard everything from crazy in my head to who knows.  Finally went to an allergist and after a couple of appointments and phone conversations after attacks, he told me that he thought I had angiodema type III, enduced by entrogen.  I did recall that most of these posts are females.  I was instructed to get off of birth control.  Had one other episode since this and I think someone in the house was on hormone replacement pills.  Worth a try for all you guys as I am sure you would appreciate the relief I feel now.

and it described my symptoms exactly. It's stress. I've had an unusual amount of stress for about three months. I thought my throat would eventually close completely. Now I know I won't suffocate! I've found that exercising helps so I've spent the last couple of nights with Jillian Michaels DVDs. It's a relief to know I'm not alone. Thanks!

I am literally in tears to know that I am not crazy! I had a Fibroid removed a month ago and almost immediately after the surgery I started having swallowing problems. My throat feels sticky and tight almost like I cant even swallow, my mouth also gets extremely dry, my nose gets all stuffed up and my chest feels tight. I went to my DR whom referred me to a cardiologist . I had a number of test done ....all came negative to heart problems. I then went back to my Dr and he told me he felt they where anxiety attacks!!! He gave me zanax which I refused to take, because I knew I wasn’t under any stress. Finally after a number of visits my Dr send me to an ENT . The Ent told me I had some reflux and my throat and sinus seemed swollen so he put me on Predisone and Zantax it has helped me a great deal but as soon as I am off the predisone all my symptoms come back. I am also experiencing a lot of joint and muscle pains ...but these pains I have had for a number of years. Can someone PLEASE give me some advise or Guidance. My family all seem to think its anxiety but I assure you its not! I feel no one is really listening to me and this makes me feel so much worse.

I know exactely how you feel. I have been experiencing the same things....My throat feels sticky and I find it hard to swallow. I also have very sticky nasal mucus and my mouth gets very dry. Everyone seems to think its anxiety but I am really not under any major stress. My ENT has given me Predisone and Zantaz it has helped me a great deal ...but as soon as I am off of the Predisone I get all the symptoms back. I went to the Circus with my family and I started feeling so bad that I almost felt I was going to pass out. I agree that the feeling of passing out was anxiety related but I get anxiety when I can swallow and have difficulties breathing through my nose. I am feeling so depressed lately and just wish I can find a solution or a reason to why I am feeling this way.

.I suggest you see a doctor to check on your thyroid. You may have a swelling of the thyroid or have a nodule growing on your thyroid, pressing on your windpipe.

Thanx for the advise.I did see a few Dr's since this post. I was diagnosed with having Helicobacter pylori and Gerd. I have been on a few antibiotics and on Omenprazole 2x a day. It has helped me with the swallowing but has not gotten rid of it completely. Now I get bad nasal mucus after eating. This is so annoying especially when I am out at a restaurant ....no one wants to hear someone blow their nose while eating :(

I have had this problem 2 years now. When I get up, I drink coffee, black. It thins the mucous in the throat, and I cough to bring it up and it helps me. Every morning I go through this. The panic subsided a year back, and it could be allergies. Also, I believe the stuff the government sprays into the air is the real problem. I sleep in the attic, with no insulation, and no one has this problem in the house but me. Drink the hot black coffee, and don't panic. Breathe slowly and drink the coffee. It works great! See a doctor to see if you have allergies too. I was diagnosed with allergies, but never went back again. I simply manage on my own.

I worry because our daughter, in her early thirties has this tight throat feeling which comes and goes in episodes. Her face becoomes flushed and I see that her  neck looks swollen. She says it can go from the throat to her jaws. She is currently on steroids until her scoe thest in a few weeks. These episodes are often accompanied by gas. She has seen an allergist and she is allergic to trees but we have not yet tested for foods. Does not seem related to when she has her meals though. She is already on thyroid meds and her thyroid level is fine. Her heart tested fine. She does have  mild asthma. This has come and gone before over the years but seems worse and more often now. Otolarygologist saw her and saod that although her throat was a little red and her glands a little swollen...this would not account for severity of her synptoms. We are at wits end trying to figure this out

She gets very frightened sometimes because she thinks she will not be able ot breathe

I not only have swelling in my throat but also one side of my left nose and face. I have been to the doctors over and over and over again, CT scans, x-rays and MRI's. They couldn't give me an answer. When I bend forward at the waist, I feel as if I am choking on a lump of something and it has sharp edging. I sleep on my left side and get the same feeling! This last February I had a throat scope done and the doc came back with the results; swollen throat. Um, dr...that is why I came here in the first place! I do have chronic sinusitus But that is based on the right and upper sinuses. I had my tonsils out in 1994 when I was 28. I have had this feeling EVERYDAY for going on15 years now and NO ONE can give me an answer. I have even had my thyroid checked out and the result of that was that I have swollen glands but yet still, NOTHING is wrong. I laugh and start to choke, I can no longer sing karoke be cause I start to choke...the list goes on and on!
