I have also had tightness in my upper abdomen area it usually happens at night and it occurs about every few months and lasts on average two hours. I recently went to the doctor and she gave me a test for a bacteria call H pylori I haven't got the results yet but it was an easy test and can be healed with antibiotics. Maybe this is your problem as well check it out. Apparently the bacteria exists in a large amount of people, but only creates a problem in some. Hope this helps, I just want this discomfort to stop and I hope it does for all of you as well.

I have it as well. My doctor told me its costochondritis. Steroid shots or an anti inflamatory can help. Drinking cold milk also helps me.

To Tonya, and everyone else here who this might relate to, consider whether the problem might be muscular. My upper abdomen is tight too after working it out a couple weeks ago, and it turns out, if you have a certain condition:

"Exercises to flatten the belly (e.g., crunches) cause the abdominal muscles to overpower psoas and spinal extensor muscles that are already too tight. Co-contraction results, in which abdominal organs are sandwiched between tight muscles, front and back, which impairs their functioning."

Not saying you might have this condition, but I do want to point out that just because it's in the ab region, doesn't mean it's an internal organ thing.

I had the same problem for the last three years. I went to the doctor and he order for me, colonoscopy, endoscopy, MRI and lot of blood work. The result was all negative. I was very disappointed. I was hoping that he would find something and get treated.

Here is a good news.
A few days ago my wife heard from her coworker an ancient Asian remedy. And she ask me to try it. I said I have nothing to lose by trying it. To my surprise after two day, I forgot about my pain. My pain is completely gone now.
This is what I did: Get a cup of luke water and mix 2 table spoons of raw honey and 1 tea spoon of cinnamon powder. Drink this mixture three times a day. One cup in morning on empty stomach, 1 before lunch and another cup before you go to bed.
I hope this works you as it did for me. Sometime home remedy better than conventional medicine.

You can also do your own research on you tube. You will find a lot of information about this remedy.

I have been reading a lot of comments about tightness in the upper abdomen, like a rope being tightened. I too have been going through it. I have been diagnosed with silent reflux. So I went to the health food store and got some Alo Vera juice as it was natural to help with the acid feeling in my throat. After I was feeling the tightness. I have since been to a food allergy doctor and found out that I am very allergic to Ginger. I had the same tightening feeling reaction after they did the prick on my back for Ginger. So I would suggest seeing if there is something you are allergic to causing the tight feeling. I know now to stay away from anything with ginger in it.

I had this same feeling occasionally. Mine goes from my throat down through my sternum, and into my stomach, mostly happens when i am laying down. It feels like someone is wringing a mop into my stomach, and it feels really tight. The pain causes me to sweat its so intense. With what you describe as arm pain, is it in your left arm? Do you experience shortness of breath when walking? If so, you need to see a cardiologist. II had this for sometime, and ignored it also. I had a blockage in my heart, and had to get 3 stents at only 49 years old. What you are describing sounds like it could be angina pain. I now take a nitroglycerin, and it eases the pain almost immediately. Also, my dr put me on acid reflux medicine, and that has stopped the angina pains almost completely. Good luck.

I have exactly this feeling, sometimes in my upper middle abdomen, sometimes in my chest. The chest tightness was an esophageal spasm, and I was given diltiazem for it. The other pain seems to be my ibs. Sometimes air seems to get trapped and it passes slowly, sometimes with a bowel movement for some reason. I hope this helps.

I too have been having the feeling like a rope being tightened around the top of my stomach just underneath the breast. I have been diagnosed with bile reflux and started to take some natural remedies from my local health food store. I went to an allergy Dr and am allergic to ginger and also ragweed. Come to find out the chamomile and also aloe vera with ginger root in it caused me to have an allergic reaction. Try to rule out what you have been eating, drinking or medications and hopefully you can also get to the bottom of what is causing the tightness. Good luck!

I have had the same tightness and narrowed it down to an allergic reaction to different things but since I have eliminated those things and still having the tightness I am realizing it is stress and anxiety.

Wow....2 bleeding ulcers and Ibs is causing the pain???? Your doctors must be idiots. Sorry to say. Not too mention that real Ibs is a very mild condition and most cases are over diagnosed.
