HI I had my tonsillectomy 8 days ago. I went in 7am on the monday morning. Although according to the doctor who came around about 8am I was "first in the queue," but my high Blood Pressure changed all that and ended up having to wait for that to go down so by the time they actually took me up to the Operating Theatre it was 2.10pm. I woke up around 3.45pm all done a little delirious (why was everyone walking around in blue suits????) I mean scrubs of course. It was gone 9pm by the time I was allowed home after coming off the drip, being allowed to drink water and eat a sandwich which I really didn't want to it but figured I was better off just eating it. Bad move. I thought I felt something drop from the back of my throat after I almost finished the sandwich (except for the crusts) and called the nurse. The nurse checked it but called the doctor anyway. By that time it was the night doctor so a bit longer to wait but not all that much. The doctor had a look and confirmed everything was fine. My parents, who had had a 4 hour drive had driven to London to collect me so we left and got home just before 9.30pm and collapsed into bed.
They gave me codeine, mouthwash and antibiotics and I had my own paracetamol to be sure of not mixing the drug so it was rather a medicine cabinet to take along with the regular drugs as well.
The first couple of nights I slept OK with only waking once so just topped up with the 2 x 500mg of paracetamol and 30mg of codeine again during the night.
The first 3 or 4 days were OK with only 1 x 500mg paracetamol before "meals" and the 2 at night time with the codeine. That went up by about day 5 to two paracetamols before meals.
It was my jaw and the back of my tongue, presumably from the clamps that hurt the most rather than the tonsils itself. It mostly just hurt to eat and drink, the pain level would go from a 2 or 3 out of 10 (with paracetamol) to about a 7 or 8 whilst having to eat. I ended up drinking before eating as that would increase the fluid intake rather than the other way around. I had to give up tea and coffee as well as I was concerned that the caffeine would cancel out the water I'd drink. I don't "do" decaffeinated tea or coffee. Over the first 6 or 7 days I could only drink only just over 3 long glasses of water each day- otherwise it hurt too much.
Day 6 was the most painful. I think I overdid it on the painkillers on this day and could sleep barely at all for the pain that night however, by the end of day 7 (after the most painfullest night ever) things did seem to have turned a corner. The next night was better.
Day 8 the pain still is still there but much more manageable. I am back one paracetamol at a time during the day and we will have to see about night time.
Food wise I could eat eggs, yogurt, (gave up on cereal) satsuma's, bananas (they hurt a bit but Okish), soup with grated cheese, mashed up sweet potato and carrots the odd slice of soft white bread. I tried scrambled egg on toast on day 4, could eat the egg but not the toast because it went cold by the time I got to it. Mushroom (chopped small) and omelette on day 6 & 7.
On the mend now and as a friend said to me think what it would be like if you had wanted it done and they wouldn't do it. Well quite...

Hi. It’s day 6 for me and I’m really struggling. My tongue is so swollen and hurts the most!!!! I have saliva in my mouth that I can’t swallow and eating is so painful. Nighttime is the worst, last night I was pacing around as my whole throat was so soar and I couldn’t swallow.
How did the rest of your recovery go? Also did the hospital give me antibiotics?! I’ve heard some people say they got them and I was only given painkillers. I’m just worried it will get infected as feels disgusting and I have a funny taste at the back of my mouth

I didn’t get any antibiotics but one thing I can say is chewing gum helps cut the thick saliva from forming in your mouth

36 yr old female:
Woke up from surgery with immediate feeling of chest congestion. Throat pain was worse than I expected it to be, but the nurse gave me meds right away. I asked her about why my chest felt so very congested. She told me it was probably post nasal drip. I didn’t have it in me to argue. I figured it would clear up. Days 1-3 were okay. Stayed on top of pain meds, humidifier, cold drinks in my Yeti tumbler (a must-have by your bedside, BTW. Kept my Gatorade ice cold ALL DAY!), the whole nine. I really think the humidifier played a key role.
Day 4-6 were pure HELL. Pain meds (10mg of Percocet) would wear off in 1 hr. Would try to supplement with IBuprofen, but that didn’t do much either. I tried to just sleep through it. I was so tired. Couldn’t keep my eyes open anyway, so it was perfect.
The HELL finally turned a corner on day 6. Went back to tolerable but I was now coughing up bloody mucus and coughing a lot. Imagine how that felt on my throat. Called Dr. He thought it was the normal part of the healing process. I think he just thought that I had a lot of blood left over and I was expelling it? I love my doctor. I’m not knocking him. Next day, though, I couldn’t breath. I had my husband take me to ER. Sure enough, after X-rays, I was diagnosed with adoration pneumonia. Apparently can be contracted when intubated. That would explain my congestion upon waking up?? ENT called to check in with how I made out. When I told him, he sounded very perplexed. He couldn’t understand how a young, healthy adult could contract that. And he was sure the anesthesiologist wasn’t sloppy. Wanted the X-rays. Called me back next day to tell me it wasn’t aspiration pneumonia. He really doesn’t think I got it from the surgery. I have my doubts, but I do trust him. Following up with my Primary in a few more days to get anthird opinion, so to speak, but need to follow up anyway.
So, day 10– throat feels ok. I’ve set myself back a bit from all the coughing. I feel like garbage but that’s the pneumonia. If that hadn’t happened, I would have been right on track. Nowadays I’m enjoying warm tea with honey. Seems to feel better than cold. And I attempted real food tonight. It went ok. That was nice. I think I’ve lost 10 lbs, so at least something good has come from this sh*t show of a recover. All in all, though, I keep telling myself that in the end, it’s worth it.
Good luck to anyway going through it. I had my doubts, as insessovely staked these forums in the weeks leading up to this. I was close to backing out, but I’m glad I pushed through.

Good luck with yours. and glad to hear you are on the mend. When I was over the worst I started drinking milkshakes, just the Nesquick kind with semi-skinned milk but put honey in them as well. It really soothes the tongue.

In all reality maybe coming to sites likr this saves people hours of waiting in an ER. If it wasnt for this sight i would have been seen in the ER as i am 29 and just had my tonsils out on wednesday. My tounge is in excruciating pain hence the reason i am awake at 3 am and not asleep. My tounge hurts worse then the tonsils. And nothing works

I had polyps removed from my vocal cords yesterday. Upon waking up from surgery, my tongue has been swollen and feels like it was used with a cheese grater. I'm assuming it's from the clamps they used. This morning it hurts worse. I'm not allowed to use my voice for a few more days, so we shall see how talking is. I hope it doesn't last too long.

Just had my tonsillectomy done 6 days ago. And I totally get that tongue pain. It hurts like f*#$. My throat seems fine with swallowing food and water. But the back of my tongue is the one giving me excruciating pain everytime I try to swallow even my own saliva. I think the reason is the clamp they used to keep my tongue down. Maybe the pressure was too much during operation and it kind of damaged the right side of my tongue. I know that it'll get better tho. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

The white stuff is oral thrush and actually normal after surgery! Just brush your tongue when you brush your teeth and it should come right off. It’s a thin flim that is on your tongue. Pretty normal, no need to be afraid

I’m on day 6 too, I still haven’t managed to eat anything it’s been 144 hours since I last ate anything that wasn’t ice pops. I tried a couple of spoonfuls of mash and I tried a couple of spoonfuls of ice cream but neither were manageable in the slightest:( I have really bad ear pain and have had bleeding today along with tongue pain and I have pain in my throat that’s always there but it’s horrible when i swallow. I struggled to even drink water for two days. My nurses never told me anything about the recovery I’ve had to just research things and find out everything for myself :(
