I had my tonsils out in February, after almost 9 years of constant attacks of tonsilitis. I've had ear reconstruction, and was told that my tonsil op would not hurt as much as that did. I was in complete agony!!! I'm 20 (was 19 at the time of surgery), and really wish they'd referred me sooner.
I was told to have 2 weeks of rest after the operation. The surgeon told me to eat lots of icecream and smoothies, but the nurse told me to eat toast and crisps straight away. Obviously I believed the surgeon, seeing as he specialises in the throat... He was wrong!! I was in so much pain a week after the operation. My mum had to phone the hospital and I almost got readmitted. I had to start eating soft crisps like Wotsits and Skips. To help knock the scabs off, which is what causes the pain. Once I started eating solids the progress increased so fast!!! I lost a stone and a half in the week of not eating - which also caused my mother to get worried!
Now almost 3 months on I have not been ill at all! I keep getting what feels like tonsilitis which is strange - the headaches, fatigue and sore throats. But this only happens when normally I'd be expecting an attack.

My GP initially didn't refer me, he told me that it would not make any difference in my health... Well, apart from this phantom tonsilitis I've bene absolutly fine! Ha!

So I'd deffo recommend it, but more so in younger people. And to have as much time off of work/school/college as possible. The longer you rest, the quicker you'll get your energy back afterwards :-)

My daughter was also advised to have her tonsils removed. She is 9 years old and like some of you I am so worried and afraid. What if during the operation there will be complications or even after the surgery. This is her first and my first to have in our family. After reading your experiences about this operation made me more worried and concerned about how my daughter is going to deal with it. Please I need a medical advice on how we will be dealing with the pain after the surgery.

I had mine out when I was 15, and my 3yr old daughter is having hers out tomorrow morning. I found when i had mine out that the mornings were the worst. Simply because your not swollowing and keeping the throat moist. The best advice i could give is to stay on top of the pain with your meds. Take it even if you dont think you need it at the next dise time, for the first few days. Also, keep yourself swollowing as much as possible. the more you swollow the less it will hurt throughout the day. Its a little less difficult to tell the adults this verses a 3yr old. So i am sure tomorrow I will have my hands full. Good luck to you all!!!!

My husband is having a tonsillectomy on Saturday, and I am just wondering what actually happens while he is under anesthetic? What does a tonsillectomy involve and what actually happens?
