ok this is really getting me down down, I have to say the doc did warn me that it would get worse but this is just a joke! I can eat due to the pain (i keep making things and not being able to eat them), I am forcing myself to drink water but even that is hurting. The pain killers seemed to work for a couple of hours the past couple of days but today they havent touched it, therefore i cant eat and therefore the pills are making me feel sick and light headed!! all i can do is keep telling myself it will be worth it in the end!!

I just wanted to respond to those who have had tonsilectomy and sinus surgery at the same time. I had a deviated septum corrected while having my tonsils removed.
The most frustrating part of the experience was my inability to breath through my nose for the first 5 days. Blood would run down my nose for at least the first 2-3 days after the surgery and clotted in my nasal cavity. I was forced to breath through my mouth, which made for extreme dryness at night and high levels of pain in swallowing (even water).
I tried to get off pain medication asap because I get naseau easily...big mistake! I tried extra strength Tylenol after day 4 and it was inadequate. I absolutely had to go on prescription pain medication again. I've been on Darvocet, it works well. It does not make me to sleepy (as I must need to keep up with my work at home) and does not make me as naseated as the liquid pain meds.
My entire back throat is white and scabbing. I hear it should hurt a bit when the scabs come off.
I have been taking AYR (non-prescription) for drynes in my nasal cavity.
Oh yes, and hot baths with cold ice packs placed on my jaw are like heaven to me. For example, if i wake up at three oclok in the morning due to pain, I'll get an ice pack ready, take a dose of pain meds and let the warm water just hit me. It really helps because I wake up slightly sweaty and cold....a symptom of mild cold fever which is common for post op. The warm water sooths my body and the ice packs on my jaw prevents swelling and feels amazing in contrast to the water. I'll sit there for at least 30 minutes until the pain meds kick in and once they do head off to bed to sleep for another 3 hours.

I went on Percocet went I had mono, it was for the pain in my throat cause my tonsils were so enlarged. Percocet sent me for the ride of my life. I was soo loopy and ended up going back to the hospital because I spiked a fever of 104. 5 days ago I got my tonsils out because they never fully went down from the mono, and today is by far the worst day. I am taking Tylenol with Codeine every 3 1/2 hours- 4 hours. But I feel like this is going to take forever to recover.

I'm 26 yrs old and on day 6. This is a living nightmare. I used to get extremely bad tonsillitis and quinsy, to such an extent that my tonsil would, over the course of a week, swell up and rupture. To say it was agony is an understatement.
This however, is worse. I cant eat, drink, sleep. I have a constant smell of rotten egg/dead animal in my mouth (with a foul rancid taste to match). I'm in constant, severe pain in both my throat and my jaw/neck. I'm on 3 types of painkiller, and 2 types of antibiotic. I could be swallowing M&M's for all the good they're doing. Labor pains and child birth were less horrible than this. I wish I'd have just endured the bouts of swollen tonsillitis than this hell. :-(

I had a hsyterectomy then two weeks later I had my tonsils taken out I would rather have a hysterectomy again and again then to have my tonsils taken out. I am 36 years old and it is true about the older you are the more it hurts, besides the fact that I didn't drink all that much because it hurt so bad to swallow anything - I even hurt when I tried Ice cold water, it had to be room temperature. I lost about 15 pounds, I was happy about that, and that would be the only readon I would ever think about doing it again if they grew back... It took probably about 7-8 weeks until my throat felt normal again, it wasn't painful at the end it was just scratchy and aggrivating mor ethen painful - I stayed on my meds for about 3 weeks.
On day 10 I remember leaning over to help my daughter tie her shoe and my throat just started bleeding, but then it stopped my Dr. told me it was going to happen about the 10th day and sure enough it did, he said it is when i lost my scabs. No other issues with bleeding just the pain.

I had my tonsils out about a month ago. i read many blogs pertaining to this and it only made me more nervous. I thought I would share my experience, because I think it was pretty typical or average. I am 28 years old, pretty old in the world of tonsillectomys.
The first couple of days werent bad, I was pretty comfortable. Slowly, my throad started to hurt a little more, and become more swollen as the steroids wore off. I would have to say the most frusterating parts were days 5,6, and 7, as my throat was so swollen I could barely swallow anything. Day 8 was the first day of improvement. You might as well plan on having a very swollen/hurt/annoying throat for 2 weeks. I think the pain is well worth the results, having much fewer infections, etc.

I'm 39 and had my tonsils out on Oct 30th... I guess that makes today day 9 or 10.
The first week was suprisingly easy. Some pain but no where near as bad a strep throat/tonsillitis. Slept lots and lots (sitting up) and drank something every 20 minutes.
The last couple days have been more painful than last week. Still not awful... but I'd love to eat something that I can really chew on or crunch... I guess eventually.
My concern is this... as far as I can tell the scabs haven't even begun to fall off. They feel like someone plastered my throat with two damp cotton balls. Anyone else have their scabs fall of later than they are supposed to? What does it look like, feel like when they start coming off?
Oh... to respond to those of you with swollen uvulas... mine was huge and almost transparent like, the whole first week. Today it is back to normal colour and almost back to normal size.

Oh my god, my throat hurts worse now from laughing so hard!!! I am glad many of you have such a good sense of humor on here. I have a couple of replies to post:
To the nurse with the son, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Go back to the ER again and again, and if that doesn't help I would contact the patient advocate of the hospital and report that ENT. I already reported my ENT clinic to the patient advocate after my experience and that was simply because they failed to call me back within a reasonable amount of time!! Pain control is a huge issue, they have NO right whatsover to deny him some relief. Can you go to another facility? I mean what do they suggest? He could take Tylenol but in order to control the pain he'd have to take so much that he could die of liver failure! In fact you should wave some scary "what if's" in their face. Having the pain that I have now and knowing that your son is experiencing it without meds just infuriates me.
To the people worried about poopy breath; apparently this only happens when you have the adenoids removed.
As for my own tonsil woes, I had mine removed on 1 Nov, 07 and I am still in a great deal of pain. Abandon all hope ye who enter here! That should have been written above the OR room entryway. Anyone here have some good post-tonsillectomy recipes? So far I am enjoying chicken noodle soup, ramen, jello, and reese's peanut butter cups. And that is about it. I need some real food and i need it now! Why did I do this right before Thanksgiving? whyyyyy?!

hi again u lot ,
just an update on my daughter we are now 15 days post op and only 2 days ago did she stop taking her pain meds on a regular basis, shes still not eating as she should be and has lost over 5 kg in weight ( i dont know if this is normal or not for a child) but i dont like it,she had 2 go on anti biotics after i called the doc out for a home visit cos 1 day she was banging her head against the sofa cos the pain in her head was so bad and the smell had got 2 a point that u could smell it from the other side of the room,
well anyway 15days later her voice is more or less bk 2 normal but u can se that shes still not as she was pre op her voice gives up after a few hours and she still gets tired easier than she used to and is very very moody, now i dont know wot i was expecting as my other daughter who had the same done last year at the age of 5 was fantastic after it within a week she was eating drinking as normal georgia on the other hand at the age of 11 is a different story alltogether, this has really been a horrible experience for us as a family as weve felt so helpless
on a postive note the tonsills have gone yipppeeeeeeeeeee
oh 1 question have any of u ever heard of someone not having any adenoids ?? just asking cos while she was having the tonsills out they went 2 see if the adenoids needed removing as well just 2 find that she didnt have any and well iv never heard of this before.
right iv gone on enough now 2 all of that are about 2 go through this op or have a child about 2 through it all the best for thos of u who are still recovering hang on in there it gets easier oh yes and

I had my tonsillectomy on Weds morning at 7:30 am and I only spent about 4 or 5 hours at the hospital. My dad had his tonsils out when he was a kid... Granted I'm 21, but he said that the 2nd and 3rd days were the worst. Which is true. The only big problem is that I'm on Hydrocodene and it's making me sick to my stomach randomly...
I'm not able to eat. And I don't even want to eat because it's hard for me to even swallow water. I feel terrible because my parents keep bringing me applesauce, gatorade and cold water but I just can't do it. I have a huge amount of mucus/phlegm and I don't even know how I got it!?
I'm hoping that I feel better within a week because I can't stand laying in bed and watching t.v. anymore. Thank God that I have unlimited text messaging, so I can stay in contact with the world.

I'm 43 just went through a tonsillectomy, uvual reduction and other sinus surgery. I'm on day 3. The best thing for me is eating cubed seedless watermelon with a little salt sprinkled on it. It hurts to swollow, but it seems like to more I swollow, the easier it gets. Must be "no pain -- no gain" kinda thing. The salt seems to reduce my overall pain and the fluid from the watermellon helps me keep hydrated.
My tongue is swollen and brused. It hurts the most when I wake up. I have noticed the more fluids I drink, the less swelling I have. I have been sipping in Gateraid as much as possible. And yea swollowing hurts, but gets less painfull the more I do it. I schedule my heaviest sipping after I have taken my meds and feel they are at their strongest.

Im 25 and I had my tonsills out 5 days ago and i swear to god had i known the recovery was going to be such excruciating hell i would've never had the surgery! I have had a bad reaction to the pain meds which has caused me to spend 3 of those five days puking my brains out unable to keep anything down. After a couple trips to the e.r. and lots of iv fluids im feeling a little better (by better i mean on ascale of 1 to 10 my pain's about an 81/2) I haven't taken any pain meds in 2 days and i know the risks of rebleeding but i smoked last nite and i swear it helped all my other symptons. so to all you 420 friendly folk out there you know what they say without risk there's no reward!
