After suffering from soar throat, fever and two large nodes in my neck, a doc found I have tonsillitis, which is an inflammation of the tonsils. I would like to know if this means that I will have to have them removed and if their primer function is to catch germs, does it mean I will be more prone to infections? I am 26, female. Thank you

Even if you do have to take them out, it doesn’t mean you will be more open to germs attacks and illnesses because your body will certainly produce antibodies to fight infections. As for your worry about having them removed, it only happens if you suffer from recurrent tonsillitis. At least, that is what I’ve been told. Your treatment will depend on the cause i.e. if its bacteria or a virus. You may get antibiotics or be left to fight the infection on your own if it’s virus. But didn’t your doc already prescribe you some kind of treatment? And one more thing, be careful with this tonsillitis because it is contagious and spreads from person to person by contact with the throat or nasal fluids.
