I can't poop now as it is. I've taken every thing now n nothing works.I may go once every couple wks couple peanuts where it feels like I've passed somethin bigger. I can go a she month n not poo. I've never had diarrhea since I was so I'll n the hosp.where I ended up w. C-DIFF. What can I expect after the surg.I've read some people go doz. Times a day to less than 4 a day. So what is considered normal?p

I was serving in the Army as a Sgt in Germany in July 1985 when I was taken into hospital in Hannover (Army) and underwent a Total Collectomy.
Given, I was informed a 3hrs operation turned into 11hrs on the table as bringing in a surgeon from London by helicopter the surgery was successful.
Later, when recovering, the Brigadier surgeon with his team of interns advised me that this would be the end of my service career (I joined at 15, now had wife & 2 children) and will in a few years need a bag etc and I will be discharged and proceeded to the next patient.
Far from what tbey were preaching before the surgery.
Since, in put of 40+ stiches with horizontal cutfrom waist to above the precious parts, distention and not left my hospital bed I planned my escape to keep my service career and livelihood.
Only a house telephone in our married quarter in Dortmund I called my pal to collect me. Putting me, for the first time out of bed, into a wheelchair with a blanket covering my backpack and informing the now elated nursing staff going out for a cig (bad habit now gone) and speedily drove away the 3+hr journey back to Dortmund to my family who had no idea of my decision to go AWOL without a firm understanding of what's next.
My stumble into the home, walking like a 96yr old with a plastine bendy spine I made it to the settee...just where I lay for the next 10days.
Next morning, I had a visit from the RMP ready to arrest me and when realising that could not happen they called the local doctors, RSM and eventually the CO and entourage to my sitting room settee bedside when for the 50th time I stated that I will not be dispensed with so shab-like after serving in NI twice & FI's too only to be dumped so suddenly too.
I asked for 6mths to prove my fitness to serve. The Commanding Officer of the Regiment agreed and local medical treatment were provided at home.
Within less than 3mths i completed my first Army Fitness Test (BFT)of run 3 miles and the 7 miles (CFT) full equipment and log run within 4 mths.
The CO was pleased and confirmed that if the Brigadier surgeon had no objections then I would not be discharged. A hurdle that still needed to be overcome.
On return to Hannover with an appointment to see the surgeon I waited patiently outside his office.
Taking my turn to be called he stopped me in my tracks in the reception and shouted in his arrogant tone I should anticipate being retained in the services and would not even look at me nevermind a considered consultation and referring me to Munster hospital with his very doctor-like bedside manner...now get out before slaming his office door.
I am pleased to say that I went on to be promoted to Warrant Officer and had a great army career and more.
It will be 35 years on 04 July since I had a Total Collectomy and after a life time of problems since a child it really has been an independent day for me (bagless).
Today, the procedure has greatly advanced and I can testify there is a great life to be had afterwards.
Best wishes to all.
Roy
