What Jim1960 said is true. However, I personally believe that you should just save your money and just get the fiber.

I am a 63 year old woman who has had this problem for years and had never heard of leaky bowels until recently when I saw my gynecologist for a prolapsed uterus issue.

Not only do I have return to the washroom once or twice this can go on all day.  During regular sexual relations this also occurs which is not only embarassing but puts your partner right off.

Does anyone else experience this when having regular relations? I am not talking about anal penetration relations  just the old fashioned ones???

Alright. So after MONTHS of trying different things and combinations.

This is my conclusion.

USE THE FIBER POWDER ONLY!         FORGET THE PROBIOTICS!

I have spent $$$ on Florastor, Culturelle, Renew, Align, and Cranberry Juice. All of them work in combination with the fiber. But without, the fiber, it doesn't really make a difference. The probiotics just make you go easier because it makes the stool extra soft, but does not solve the discharge problem. If you do not have a hard time having bowel movements, then just get the fiber powder.

On a weird note, I started out using fiber pills and consumed 6-9 pills a day. It did not really help that much. Then I switched over to the Metamucil powder and took 2 teaspoons a day and that really helped. I've had bowel movement for 2 weeks now without any discharge UNLESS I do some extreme running. If I just walk around or even power walk, I am good to go. It sucks to have this discharge problem but it is a blessing to finally have a temporary solution that keeps the problem at bay.

I am a 24 year old male and have been suffering this for the past 3 years. It is a blessing to finally have this under control. I hope that there is a cure in the future, but for now, I'll stick to the fiber.

I agree with James completely.  It's the fiber—it pulls all the leaky matter together and it doesn't much matter what the probiotics or cranberry juice or whatever else does.  I just stopped the probiotic and now my stools are finally more normal again, just with the psyllium fiber powder, and a bit of the jock itch cream now and then.  Not totally normal, but as close as I've been for years.

Thanks James.

Since my problem does not feel out of control as some days I am ok...I'm going to try the metamucil. I frequently hear on tv shows that Dr.'s always seem to inform people that almost everyone should include this in their diet.

Jame has come to the same conclusion as I have. Fiber is the key. However this is still completely unacceptable. For instance I take a motorcycle adventure with remote camping and I need to pack Metamucil so my ass doesn't weep into my riding shorts. No matter where I go I need to packs this c**p so I don't smell like a sewer, all because of Antibiotics. When I do physical exercise it leaks anyway regardless of the fiber. When does it end?
If I miss just one day, Squishy Butt returns. I have been suffering for 1 year and others have been for years..It is unacceptable and I for one will inquire about my legal rights and the fact that this condition was not disclosed when the doctor stuffed the hi power antibiotics down my throat.

I have had the same problem, with same tests and same outcome and no one knows what to do. I use lightdays. I know its for women but it keeps me clean and I don't worry about coming through my clothes or running to the restroom while I am at work. It works. Gus

Everyone here has a condition in which I will describe as my problem as well. Whatever the cause is I believe it to be something overlooked. While some of us have allergy or yeast issues causing it, I still think it's something overlooked.

First, I'm going to blame stress. I'm willing to bet most of us are stressed.

Second, I take Xanax for anxiety. Anyone else?

Third, I like beer or Gin and Tonic daily at the end of my day. I don't drink till I fall over but I drink to take the edge off because I feel it's more natural than the Xanax. Both do the same thing to the body...relax you.

Unfortunatly I'm never totally relaxed. I have a high stress job, deal with traffic, and the daily stress of life.

When we were younger we had way less responsibility.

I believe this is just a stress related issue. I also believe anything you fabricate to think will help might because the mind "fixes" things to an extent.

My problem started when I no longer crapped normal stools. I can blame a variety of things like stress, drinks, medication... but one fact is constant; If I take a normal dump (which is very rare and I blame it on stress) there is little problem.

Normal would be defined as a dump that is nicely shaped firm but not hard and hardly anything to wipe. I'm willing to bet none of us with this problem have a normal bowl movement.

So the solution is: Stress less and or take something (anything) that makes your stool "normal". I'm going to try fiber.

I won't necessarily agree that stress is THE cause (we've pretty much all taken antibiotics, so who knows?!), but it definitely makes things worse.  I always have more trouble when anticipating a social event or a trip, or if something stressful happens at work—basically when I feel like I'm not "in control" of a situation.  That's when I get a grinding feeling in my bowels, and that can cause a bit of discharge, and the squirming around can cause more skin irritation down there.

And yes, feeling more relaxed always helps.  Alcohol, for one thing, and I suppose Xanax or some other medication would, too; but even having an enjoyable time talking to friends or seeing a concert usually helps, too.  And after a night's sleep, my body almost always feels totally ready to go...until I have a bowel movement, and then, as you say, the type of bowel movement makes all the difference for the rest of the day.  (And spicy foods definitely don't help.)

I hate to get graphic (ALERT), but every time I have a bowel movement I stay sitting down and I reach back with my last two fingers and gently clear away anything solid dangling or sticking before wiping, because the more I wipe, the worse it will be, and you may be surprised how little there is left to wipe after this method (it's much easier washing my hands vigorously than having irritated anal skin).  Then I wipe with a gentle dabbing, still sitting/crouching, with the toilet paper folded over so there are no rough edges sticking out.  After washing my hands, I usually will take just a small fingertip amount of jock itch cream and spread it lightly along ONE side of the crack (doing both sides makes it a little sticky; doing one side, it will spread to the other cheek when you walk).  But I sometimes will delay the cream, because often, as we know, walking around for a while will cause a bit more matter to come out, so then I repeat the finger/dabbing process, with the cream after that.  If I find that walking is still uncomfortable, I'll spread just a little Aquafor (or could be petroleum jelly) in front of the anus and forward a bit; not too much, or it can make things too sweaty in there.

So, graphic section over.  Aside from that, psyllium husk fiber powder twice a day, and my problem is mostly taken care of.

As for the smell, when it was worse, I would sometimes dab a little Desitin or Balneol (or something similar) above the anal area, so the medicated or soapy smell would overtake the discharge.  I suppose cologne or deodorant could help, too, if your skin can tolerate it.

You need to use Calmoseptine cream. Thats what I use after a shower. It serves two purposes, one being it creates a "barrier" protecting the skin and making cleanup easier. It's mainly used for feeding tubes and also has something in it that cools/sooths. It's not perscribed and helps the situation 90% right off.

Again, I feel the problem is a result of the stool and or stress. I would imagine anything sticky and runny coats the inner rectum and the body needs to purge it to an extent.

While "Roids" and fissures will contribute to the problem it still stems back to the stool. If we all had a "normal" bowl movement I hardly think we would have an issue. I blame the stress because it leads to IBS and other things and is hard to avoid. Thus my theory as to having to actually control the stool.

If we can confirm we all do not have a normal stool / bowl movement we then have a major common cause.

Clearly foods today have all kinds of stuff in them and trying to pinpoint an allergen in them would be very difficult.

Human design is at fault to a degree as well as hair and moisture do not go together well. The cream I mentioned will save you this problem and rule out external bacterial and raw skin issues. If after a short time the cream does not provide releif then it is in fact internal.

I suffer from both being that I get irritated from sweat and the main problem is internal due to non normal stool.

I am going to try Fiber as mentioned and perhaps B12 as well. It's pretty sad there is no doctor that has an answer to this and we fall to the net to compare notes. Cranberry Juice always helps irritations down below somehow. Anyone know what's in the stuff that's doing the job?

I hope the info I share provides some help as no one mentioned the cream I use yet. It does work to a point but I still do not have a cure.

Yes, all good info.  I'll look into that cream, although my dermatologist has said that the jock itch cream (originally in combination with a hydrocortisone cream) was supposed to provide that barrier, and in fact it has helped in that regard.  Someone else has mentioned jock itch powder, which I have not tried yet.  As for the women's Lightdays pads that were also mentioned, I've definitely considered them in the past, but my problem is not that bad anymore.  And I drink cranberry juice on most days.

And yes, the hair is an issue, but not only the combination with moisture, but also dried fecal matter that makes the hairs feel like little spikes, so it's definitely important to keep as clean as possible.

And no, my bowel movements are not usually solid and firm as they should be, but they are solid more often now that I'm taking the fiber and NOT the probiotics.  I assume that we all pretty much share the abnormal bowel movements, but I also wonder what other traits we share: diet, alcohol intake, medications, weight, amount of hair in the area (i.e., do people who get laser hair removal still have this problem?), hemorrhoids, sexual activity, exercise regimen, and, of course, stress and anxiety.  Is there a typical profile?

That cream will be the best thing since sliced bread. I kid you not, and I can't even remember when I started using it. I used the Jock itch stuff at some point (lotrimane...spelling) thinking I would cure a fungi of sorts but it actually caused other issues.

We do need to compare facts to find a cure I agree. Regardless of what brought us here we need to focus on a fix.

Fiber brings the stool together so it makes sense. Less mess less of a problem.

Cranberry juice? What's in the stuff working for us? I'll google it as well but we need to find the common ground.

Walking a distance seems to cause it to happen. Why?

If it's random and some days are good, I'm going to rule out food allergy.

Most animals poo and never wipe. (I say most because only a human would assist..lol) I'm not about to eat dry meal and water the rest of my life, so I guess this is where I draw the line.

The only thing I would think of is that as younger children we ran around a lot. And I know for a fact that exercise has a huge impact on stools. So, I wonder if we have amounted so much time in front of a CPU that we no longer do what we once did and thus we generated a problem....

It seems, as in anxiety, that this is a newer problem than older. I see no mention of this in older days. Stress? Maybe so. Food additives, perhaps. But why should anyone have to deal with this?

Lets put our heads together. We can beat this.

As I read the above I agree we need to put our heads together. Latest is I just came back from surgeon, dr thought it was recticile (lining of vagina stretches out and holds fecal matter) but anatomically I am perfect, so the search goes on. One thing that is different is when I have a bowl movement its almost perfect, so why leakage of fluid and fecal? Very frustrated, want to exercise but causes such leakage and irritation just can't. I'm not "stressed" retired and very good life, don't drink. Maybe yoga or meditation might help. Thanks for discussing it, it really helps. Will be trying psyllium husk fiber again and the cream and see where that takes me and stop taking probiotics. I'm not giving up.

I did some extensive research and have come to a conclusion. According to medical fact the internal sphincter is not under voluntary control at all. It's main function is to provide a watertight seal so to speak.

It can be damaged in many ways. (Way too many to list) Some things such as nerve damage. Foods that relax it (Caffine and Artificial Sweeteners).

So, there are a number of combinations that are going to affect us all differently but one thing remains constant. The seepage is caused by this sphincter. For various reasons it relaxes to the point we weep, leak, and so on.

If you have a bad lower back (I do) that's all it would take for the sphincter to have an issue. And if you did the exhaustive list of taking food and drinks out of your diet you would also find the cause.

Any issue relating to nerve damage or weakened muscles due to any perticular cause would also be a main factor is my best educated guess.

Thus why when moving around it weeps. Now I understand why doctors do not have the answers either. There are way too many combinations and I cannot even imagine surgery for that.....

Which leads us to the final solution; How to stop your internal sphincter from over relaxing? You can't.

So, if we infact have nerve damage we live with the condition. If it's a food, we eliminate it or, yes you guessed it, live with the condition.

For those of you that mentioned Oily Discharge you may want to look up: Steatorrhea. Orange leakage: Keriorrhea.

You can go crazy looking up all that it can be. I don't want any of you to lose hope but this is not a simple solution issue at all.

If you can afford testing and doctors, by all means that's the best bet. You can try eliminating stuff from your diet but i'm not sure what's worse because that can drive you crazy too.

I do however wish that we all find a cure somehow.
