Ok. I did my own testing being that a lot of people here went to doctors and had various things done and still have the problem. I went a good span of time without any effects as well and have a few conclusions I want to share.

As said above it is going to be hard to pinpoint because a percentage of us do in fact have actual issues that may mimic the same said condition so I am going to treat this as a general understanding.

These are the facts in my case, use them with a grain of salt to see if a compare yields answers.

1) Cut back stress - This appeared to help but cannot confirm.

2) Switched to a dab of Vasiline after shower to "provide natural oils" and avoid irritation. - Soothing, nice. Seems to help some.

3) Cut back on wheat beer - This seemed to help.

4) Tried changes to diet in many combos. - Useless, it's not the food. How my body process it is out of my control.

5) Spent less wipe time more shower bottom off time. - Helped the irritation for sure.

Conclustion: Not specifically food per say or the life habits but do have an idea what's going on. (See below)

What's going on here reminds me of something else in a strange way. Urinary tract infection has the same symptoms largly.

1) Urge to go

2) Leakage

3) Uncomfort (various degree of sensation)

4) Strange oder

Conclusion: It is my belief this is some sort of infection in the colon. Your body would naturally try to expell harmful cultures. It could be a diesease from something perhaps, imbalance of sorts too, yes. But the irony of the feeling in contrast to a Urinary tract infection is so similar it is creepy.

I myself do not feel running to dozens of doctors is going to help. But I think testing for various things has to be done in my case to bring closure. And the really weird part is that walking a distance seems to make it worse while sitting is not so bad.

As in fibromyalgia, I think we suffer from a condition with a general name to which there is no definitive cure yet.

I'll live my life looking forward to the better days. I hope this provided some insite to those that suffer.

Here are my impressions (rebuttal is probably the wrong word!):
1) I have to agree about stress - it's a factor, but hard to know if it's the cause or the effect)
2) When it's bad, and walking at all is uncomfortable, I use Aquafor (basically Vaseline with extra medication) spread just in front of the anus. It does wonders for comfort, but the downsides are a) a damp feeling, and b) it eventually dries up and gets irritating itself.
3) Yes, beer is almost always bad for me. The jury is out on alcohol in general – reduces stress, but when I cut it out completely, things were generally better. Red wine is not so great either.
4) I think diet does have an effect (though it may not be the actual cause). Spicy foods (as in chilis) definitely have an adverse effect, as well as "hard to digest" foods like cream sauces, fruit rinds, sausage casings, seeds, etc.).
5) Still experimenting a bit, but for me, direct spraying in the shower has sometimes made it worse.

Hard to know regarding infection. You may be right, but as you say, we're all lumped under an umbrella that covers various symptoms and probably a variety of cures,

I also have this problem  of colon drainage.  I tried the garlic a few weeks ago and it worked great so I thought it was gone.  I stopped using the garlic and it came back so I am back on the garlic and it stopped.  I have had this problem for at least 2 years and the doctors do not know.  I found that cleaning myself with wet and wipes and using long pantiliners helps greatly.  It keep you dry and stops the irritation.  You do not need to keep going to the restroom at work and it keeps your clothes clean.  The pantiliners work well with briefs.  Boxers are too loose.  I have tried the fiber and  probiotic acidophilus but it did not work.  I realize long pantiliners are ment for women but the generic are cheap and they work and so we won't tell.   Gus

I have been dealing with the leakage issue for a little over a year now.  I finally talked to my doctor about it and he recommended Cortizone.  He said after I wipe and it comes clean, my anus is swollen.  Because it's swollen it allows the mucus to drain out.  He said the Cortizone will reduce the swelling and itching that comes with it.

I have tried the probiotic and fiber suppliments.  The fiber suppliements have been working better than anything else.  I'll keep applying Cortizone and/or Prep H to keep the swelling down and hopefully over time that will make the drippy drip go away.  We'll see.

Glad to see I'm not the only one suffering from this.

I'm going to agree this is a very important factor. I say this because I did in fact also wipe like crazy and during that time things were much worse. Behindit stated showering it was a problem, but when I do that i use a very gentle stream of water. (Like a bidget which I plan to install someday) I can factually say it is in some instances a combination of issues. What was stated above is a very important factor. As we age, other things will factor in too. If it's a constant issue there is an apparent condition. If it is a condition that comes and goes then it's a reaction condition best guess. I also believe the anus is like a belly button in the fact some are different than others. Some are deep, and or hairy. Some not so much. Depending on design some of us are prone to conditions. I guess you have to think of it like someone that gets nervous. Ever have a day when your pit sweat is really stinky due to something you have to attend or do? Oddly it's the bodys way of telling us something. The irritation and condition is most likely the same. If its not us causing it with food or wipeing for example, the body is doing it for a reason. We dont like it, it's very annoying, but we are coming up with ways to deal with it. And, yes, we are not alone.

Yes, all very valid points. I would add that it in some ways it's not that different from having a runny nose. The more you wipe, the more irritated and chapped your nose gets; you may need some kind of cream or ointment to calm it down (and having excess hair in there can make it more irritated). But also, there's a reason you have a runny nose: it's just not normal to have a runny nose every day for the rest of your life, so is it allergies, an infection, or what? We can usually make that stop, so why not this?

I saw my gastroenterologist the other day, and he still sees nothing troubling, though he admits there are hemorrhoids, which could be contributing. He keeps emphasizing cleanliness, saying to use a dab of Balneol (a kind of cleansing lotion that's in most drug stores) on the toilet paper when wiping; I'm still wary that it will just mean more overall wiping to get rid of the Balneol, especially if more leakage happens after the initial wipe!

He doesn't advocate surgically removing the hemorrhoids, but he's fine with the rubber banding procedure, although he doesn't believe (contrary to many colorectal surgeons) that a colonoscopy beforehand is necessary, just an enema. But who knows: other people here have had hemorrhoids removed without seeing any real improvement afterwards.

So yes, frustrating, but at least we know we're not alone!

Ok, aside for irritation caused by various factors I'm going to tell you all that this condition is directly related to stress in my perticular case. Aside from the specific details I will say this. I learned that most stress is stress you are not even aware of.

Aside from stress I'm going to say Vaseline is the most natural way to combat the issue without spending gobs of cash. (In my case) I also learned that Vaseline cured dry skin itch, dry elbows, chapped lips and various other "things" that were issues. Again, minimal cost.

It's taking time to cure the butt thing, but it is. This relates to the factors not in the stress line. In fact, I would eat Vaseline to cure inside ailments if I knew it would help....lol. (Really don't try to eat it..).

My advice would be, wipe gently (moist tissue if possible) shower area gently when possible and apply a dab of Vaseline to keep the anus properly lubricated. Watch tricky foods if you can, most important SEE A DOCTOR to make sure it's not an actual issue! And, AVOID STRESS!

A body is a wonderful thing. A mind is beyond all we can imagine. There is not always an answer to suffering but, if there is something you do that you believe in that feels like it works, hey, go with it. There is no harm in trying something new. Once in awhile do something that scares you because they body responds to things the mind seems to do un-noticed. If you need to question that, think about the few times you had no issues with this topic. Most importantly, not everything needs to make sense. Let it go.

I have some feedback on a potential cure that I would like to share after reading these posts and trying out different stuff.

I'm new here, but I've been following this post with great interest as I have been suffering from the same problems as the OP for about two years now. In recent months I have taken huge steps to change my lifestyle, including a change of diet, quitting smoking and changing my job.

Only in recent weeks (following advice from the people on this thread) have I seen a significant improvement in my problem. Before we start I should tell you that I am in my late 20s, extremely fit and trained as a long distance runner, and work in an office sitting around staring at a computer all day. I occasionally do weights, but nothing super heavy. I live in the UK.

3 WEEKS AGO - I added a twice daily dose of psyllium husk to my diet. This has made my toilet trips much easier, although, to be honest, it doesn't appear to have actually helped with the interminable leaking and itching.

2 WEEKS AGO - I added kefir to my daily diet. Kefir is a cultured probiotic which tastes a bit like yogurt  I bought mine on ebay for £5. From day one of taking kefir I felt better, and the next day my first BM was 100% better. Perhaps it's a placebo  but I continue to take kefir (now two cups a day) and it seems to be improving my health day by day.

2 DAYS AGO - Following advice from a few people on here, I have added another probiotic (tablet) to my diet, and additionally I now take 4 garlic tablets each day (1000mg each). I addition to this, I have added a third daily dose of psyllium husk fibre to my diet. I'm also taking baths each day. And finally, I smother myself in jock itch cream twice daily. I have found this to be a bit uncomfortable  particularly around the ring area, but after the initial sting has worn off it feels fine (after about half an hour).

THE RESULT - So far I feel cured, although I am not going to hold my breath at this stage, but I promise to give you an update in the coming weeks.

OTHER REMEDIES TO TRY - I have researched this charming subject in some detail and there are a number of other remedies which I've yet to try. I was hoping some of you could possible shed some light on he effectiveness of the following:

Cayenne pepper: Supposedly, you take a tblspoon of this stuff every morning (mixed with water of course) and it can help with reducing swollen veins and improving elasticity (I'm assuming that my problem is caused by a swollen vein in the sphincter area).

Garlic in the ring: I have heard that by peeling a garlic clove and inserting it into the backside, you give your body an exceptional boost of goodness. Apparently, garlic has such good healing powers and can kill bacteria very fast. Has anybody actually tried this or is it a joke?

Thanks for reading. I hope to hear your thoughts.

Your sincerely,

Nearly Cured!

I struggle with Candida...overgrowth of yeast in my intestinal tract. It took 5+ months to discover as I went through every test imaginable with a digestive disease specialist to only find nothing. Then, I went to a holistic doctor and based on all my other symptoms she new exactly what it was...a very sever case because being on all different anti-biotics just made it 10 times worse. I now take Candidase and Yeast Cleanse to fight this issue mentioned above when it flares up...both can be found online or at a health food store. Not cheap but worth it!

Normal doctors aren't trained for this...sounds exactly like a yeast overgrowth in your digestive tract. Google around for Candida and find a natural health specialist in your area. Cut back on wheat and sugar, and I suggest going to a health food store and buy pro-biotics, Yeast Cleanse and Candida. It's expensive but you'll see results!

Also, an overgrowth of yeast in your intestine causes it to swell and puts pressure on your blatter causing the urge to go.

Thanks to my gal, I believe a cure has been found for SquishyButt. This only applies to those who have been stricken after taking antibiotics.

Stop consuming: Tomatoes, salsa, and tomato based products.  As it turns out, Tomatos are the culprit.

For some reason, after destroying your colons good bacteria with antibiotics, consuming tomatoes counteracts the consumption of probiotics that we all have been using to cure it. I gave up all tomato products entirely (not easily done) and I cut way back on Metamucil to a teaspoon every other day. I'm still taking an 80 billion probiotic tab every morning, but when the jars gone, I'm done. It's been 2 weeks off Tomato products and not a drip of SquishyButt. 4 to 8 more weeks of non tomato products, then I'll eat some and see if it returns or I'm fully cured.

I'll keep you posted.

But what is it about tomatoes?  The acid?  The seeds?  The rind that's hard to digest?  Curious to see what happens.  Keep us posted.

Hi all,

Am 32 years male and healthy and have this problem as well. Now my issue has started the 1st time during my honey moon in Australia 2007. Since then, it always appeared only when am travelling but not at home. During the past year, the issue continued even when am home.

I’ve seen doctors in Australia, US and my home country with no luck. All said the same message, no issue with your rear.

Now, I have to say that in my part of the world, we always wash with water, after a bowel movement. And the symptoms mostly appeared after bowel movements.

Now, what was bothering me is the burning around the ring area and most of the time during travelling I couldn't walk much or I would suffer while walking.

After going through this thread, I've started on having fiber pills with my meals. 1 with breakfast, 2 with lunch and 1 with dinner. The one am taking is called citrocel and can only be found in the US.

It seems that the issue has partly gone, at least now I can walk with no burning pain. Now around my thyes  not around the ring, I have during night itching feeling but I think it’s a different issue.

Hope this helps.

Travel was what pushed into getting more serious about addressing the issue.  I was a couple of days into a two-week trip to Europe, and with all the walking we were doing, I had to wipe so much I was bleeding.  We seriously considered flying home, but this was when I discovered that petroleum jelly in front of the anus made walking at least bearable, although it didn't stop the leakage (not until the fiber powder months later did that improve at all).
