I am very relieved to read these posts as my son who is now 15 has been having these occurrences for some years. Its good to hear that it is much more common than I thought it would be and does not appear to be allied with anything sinister and that he will probably " grow out " of it.
He had an instance last night so I made an appointment for him to see his doctor before I saw this forum.
I will still take him to see his doctor about this and I will post anything he says which might be of interest.
I'm 49 years old and have waited all this time to realise
that I was not the only person experiencing these 'fast' episodes. At times
that I can only recall were periods of relaxation, normally watching the TV,
I'd gradually feel myself moving into tunnel vision with a corner of the room
and if I looked outside I'd experience people and cars moving a lot faster than
normal although my hearing remained fine. These 'turns' were frequent and
initially very scary as a 5 year old, but as I grew older and more used to the
feeling I would attempt to write down the feelings so as to pass the
information onto my mother. Unfortunately the internet was a lifetime away thus
making it virtually impossible to search for an answer. My mother did take me
to a child psychologist without any result. I can only guess they put it down
to the fact that I was hyperactive.
The period of time between 'fast' episodes grew greater and greater until about
the age of 20 when they stopped all together.
My wife did a search tonight because my youngest son of 6 has just expressed
similar feelings so I was very pleased and surprised to see this post. My son
will get the understanding that I missed out on thanks to all those who have taken
the time to express their own experiences which can be embarrassing when trying
to explain to others who haven't come across the issue. Many thanks.
My first occurrence of Tempore Turbatio (time disturbance translated into Latin, why not have a fancy word for it?) was at an age of 14. The frequency increased steadily until it reached a top when I was 15/16 years old, when I sometimes had it several times a week. It has gotten better now, and I experience approximately every 4th month.
While some explain it has an interested feeling, I dislike the feeling of losing the 'control' of my own mind. I explained the phenomena to my doctor, and he deemed it necessary to perform a blood test, MRI and EEG... Inconclusive. It seemed like I was healthy with the exception of a minor iron deficiency, which I began to take supplementation for. Although the supplementation gave me more energy, it did not prevent the occurrence of the 'fast feeling'.
It's nice to read a suggestion for preventing this happening, Tristan, and I will try it as soon as I get the sensation of something fuzzy happening. I will report back later.
Here are some observations I have made about the 'feeling':<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
- May occur when I'm exhausted, but not necessarily
- Laying down with a blanket over my head helps mitigate the unpleasantness of the feeling, but will not make it disappear faster.
- The neurologist I talked to said that it may be related to epilepsy, and the reason for my EEG not giving any concise results was because the brain patterns which indicate epilepsy occurs randomly.
- It lasts for about 5 minutes and I can feel it coming about one minute before. It increases in strength over time.
- I have never had the feeling of shrinking or anything like that, except when I'm sick and have a fever, and then I sometimes have the feeling that the room becomes much larger.
Nice to see that I'm not alone
