Hi. I have sleep apnea and went to see the doctor for it. I’ve had X-rays, and endoscopy and 2 doctors have come to the same conclusion - I need a UPPP & tonsillectomy. Is the UPPP really the right surgery? I’ve red somewhere that doctor seems to think that surgery to advance the tongue is just as important as fixing the palate and this worries me too because I also have a large tongue. I really don't want to go through this surgery (or any other) only to find that I don't feel any better and probably need to have another one!!! Can anybody here give ma some advice?? Should I simply do it or should I ask my dr. to consider these other things I find relevant?
Hi. I found your question very interesting and I’ve searched the net trying to find the right answer for you. After reading really huge number of medical abstracts, articles and people's experiences about apnea surgery I sincerely doubt that UPPP & tonsillectomy alone is the best solution for you. Apnea usually involves the tongue as well, just as you’ve mentioned. So, if you are seriously planning to pursue surgical means to cure your apnea, then you must do something with the tongue too. On the other hand, maybe there is no need for surgery – I suggest you try dental appliances which advances your lower jaw which in turn helps to advance the tongue a little. But, if you find that it can’t help you and decide to have surgery than be sure to consult your dr about your tongue!!!
My husband just had surgery Aug. 27th. The doctor performed a septoplasty, turbinatye reduction, UPPP, tonsillectomy, and adenoidectomy all in one day. He told me that if he knew then what he knows now that he would have stayed on the CPAP. He is in horrible pain. I will repost on his recovery and see if his attitude changes after his recovery. Hopefully this cures his OSA, because I know for a fact that he WILL NOT have another surgery. I will keep you posted on if the surgery actually worked on the OSA or not. Probably won't know for another 3 months or so.
