about four years ago (i'm 20) i had a bladder infection. I took antibiotics, and the infection cleared up. a few months after that, i was sleeping next to my boyfriend after having sex when i was awakened by intense pain in my urethra. i went to go to the bathroom, and what came out looked like more blood than urine. i drank a few glasses of water and it began to feel a little better, but the pain was still there. when i went to the doctor they didn't find any 'obvious' infection, but put me on an antibiotic since blood in the urine supposedly signaled an infection. i took the antibiotics, and didn't feel any better. every time i returned to the doctor after that, there was no infection. the pain was horrible and i began to feel other symptoms as well. i don't know if they are related, but they began after the constant bladder pain started. i started feeling really tired and had really bad brain fog. sometimes i would get lightheaded when i stood up. it felt like i had a wicked hangover or was going through caffiene withdrawl. after becoming fed up with doctors, i went to see a homeopathic doctor. he put me on something (can't remember what the name was) that i was supposed to take every twelve hours. problem was, my brain was so shot that i couldn't remember to take it, and if i did, sometimes i couldn't remember if i had already taken 5 minutes ago or not. anyways, i managed to take this stuff some of the time, and it really helped alot. i imagine if i had taken it like i was supposed to, it might have cured me, but who knows. anyways, around the same time i started doing research on interstitial cystitis. i was never diagnosed with it, but the symptoms sounded right so i started eliminating foods that i thought might cause me pain. sure enough, once i eliminated tomatoes, citrus fruits, peppers, walnuts, soy, apples, and carbonated beverages, i felt tons better. i stayed on that diet for about a year, and i slowly added foods back. now i can pretty much eat whatever i want (if i don't drink enough water or eat too many acidic (apples, oranges, tomatoes) foods i get some pain) and feel fine. i always drink tons of water. i never did find out what the problem was or if i cured it. this approach worked for me, but i just wish that doctors could help us more. we should all print out a copy of this forum discussion, bring it to the doctors and say "HEY, IM NOT CRAZY.. LOOK HOW MANY WOMEN HAVE THIS PROBLEM! WHY DOESN'T ANYONE KNOW WHAT'S WRONG?"
I was never diagnosed until i was persisted that i go to a urologist. I couldnt wear tight jeans and I can never take baths. My doctor tried to diagnose me with interstitial cystitis but I knew she was wrong. The dilation really helped and When the doc tried to get the scope in... Guess what... I was just about completely blocked and never knew. No one could give me any answers before this and they even went as far as telling me i was a hypochondriac because i was going into the medical profession and all students went through this. I completely understand the frustration that comes with this. It pretty much put my life on hold not to mention my marriage and sex life.
I would go to a urologist. I received a urethra dilation and it is helping so far.
I have had a lot of weirdness. Like someone above stated, I also started with a sharp pain so bad that I woke up and couldn't stop crying and was sent to the ER. Riding in the car was the worse pain, I had nothing but sharp pain in my lower left quadrant. Doctors tried pelvic sonos and lower abdominal sonos, CT of my kidneys, laproscopy, colonoscopy, antibiotics, antidepressants, pain medicines (which i am not a fan of), urine tests for kidney stones, xray for kidney stones, Small bowel series, and thats all i can think of in the past 8 months.
Basically after that sudden pain it was gone for 3 days then sharp and back then gone for a week then back...about a month or so later then it became consistent pressure, deep, acheing pain. It has been 8 months of this ungoing constant pain and I've seen gyno, GI doctors, and now am with a urologist that is thinking that he's going to refer me back to my PCP. It's so frustrating that noone seems to know the cause I don't even know what to do. It wakes me up at night and gets worse when i sit or drive for longer than 30 minutes.
I really can relate to everyone posting and the pain but i haven't any answers either.
If anyone has any updates and conditions or diagnosis for something that sounds like what I described please post.

LLQ pain? I have LLQ pain but we think that it could be from an obstruction. small obstruction of the bowel twisting can block and cause pain for a few hours to a few days. If you have any changes in your bowel movement? like mucus or constipated feeling and also major bloating for a few days that all of a sudden goes away.
Also for the urethra s/s i forgot to actually write mine. I had UTI's since i was a kid and the pain i had was bleeding after intercourse from the strictures breaking and sometimes after urining. I had a UTI type pain always and especially after intercourse and urinating. Sometime there was a sharp pain. all my urine samples came up negative although during my pap smear it was noted that a sample taken around the area contained an excessive amount of white blood cells. Although i say the dilation has helped, I still dont have sex cause it hurts too much and I still have a lot of pain especially when i am dehydrated and water helps keep the urethra open by urinating a lot more which hurts more at first but after a while of drinking water it keeps the urethra open and prevents the strictures from reforming and it will break a few as well so a little blood could be normal.

Hi: I'm 78 years old and had a hysterectomy when I was 47. Since then UTI's constantly and terrible burning in the urethra. Antibiotics help, but now my urologist kindsa washed his hands of me, since his prescription caused me additional problems with side effects from the drug prescribed. He got his ego bruised since another specialist suggested I stop that paticular medication. That is when the urologist dismissed me by leaving a message on my answering machine. I was shocked. I've been having all the pain & burning for 3l years. Almost at my wits end. Anyone got any suggestions to help this senior? My life has no quality due to my urologic problems.
hi, i am sitting awake right now in the middle of the night with this discomfort in my urethra...panicing(spelling?) about how this is going to affect the rest of my life(i am only 22). This feeling, has been pretty much constant for about 6 months now. I am so tired of going to doctor after doctor!!! The bills are coming in and I still have no diagnosis and the problem is still there!!!! It really sucks! I am seeing a urologist now....had to go to a completely different state to even get a doctor who would listen to this problem...he wants to do i think what is called a dilation? I really hope it helps, because going through life feeling your bladder and like you have to pee because of all the irritation does not seem exciting. Little hint though, for those of you who are fairly new in feeling this, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!! It does seem to help a lot! Also, stay away from caffeine and carbonated beverages. It doesn't cure it, but at least it helps a little bit.
It is not a good thing that you all are experiencing this as well, but now I know that I am not alone in this and am NOT crazy!!!! This is truly a REAL problem that doctors need to really look at. I am crossing my fingers for right answers and diagnoses for me and all of you suffering with this irrititating and unfortunate problem.
Best wishes to you all! :-)

I have had the same thing! Stopped my BC pill and my symptoms improved! Still is in my system though too but thi month (I have felt even better than last month!) Dr. thougt maby I have IC. Hope not.. guess ill just have to see the long I am off the pill I hope the better I get. Is it possible to just have a allergic reaction to it!? I was on this pil for 10 years before this, and I had an infection just before this all started. Maby my body just became sensitive after the onfection and so I was also sensitive to the pill?
I have been having similar problems to everyone here and have just tried the tea tree oil, after using it yesterday I have found a marked improvement and the burning sensations have subsided drastically. Thanks to whoever posted this, your a lifesaver!!! Can't thank you enough. I totally recommend it to others with the same issues, but make sure you dilute it in water first. NB is does burn a little when first applying it but that subsides after a while just persevere and hopefully it works too!
Thanks again for your help, not sure what I would have done!
You should be checked for interstitial cystitis. I have it it is a life time condition and it sounds like what your going through. Do research on it and you will most likely find your answer. It will not show up on a urine culture because it is not a bacterial infection.
Trust me get checked for cancer. And do you have a bladder sling in
I have Ic and I also have been fighting with mrsa since October 11th 2011 and no antibiotic will touch it but I have a bladder sling in thats cutting into my uretha can anybody tell me what I should do next
I know how it is for your life to be on hold cuz mine is because I have had this infection since last year and i think my doc is scared to go in again and take the sling out and fix the problem but it would take more than one surgery though and its really hurting my everyday living.
What kind of antibiotic did you take? I have took every antiboitic there is and nothing still helps me. And I have even took antibiotics that I am allergic to and tell not gone.
I have read most of the posts on this page. I am 28 years old, and i have been suffering from burning in urethra and dark yellow urine from my teenage, after getting married my problem got more severe. But most of the time my test results were negative, bladder, kidney, urine everything was alright. then i started figuring out that what could be the exact cause of these uncomfortable feelings and burning in urethra. I realized that it has something to do with my psyche, as after having this problem i have become so much conscious about my urethra and bladder feelings that i always keep a silent check during my day to day activities, and then i start feeling that its burning. while on other hand when i am really busy in my work or in any other interesting activities i don't feel much pain or burning, now i have started to think that i am well and i take a good care of water intake, bowl motion and urinate at exact time whenever it is needed. i hav read material on bladder control and training that have helped me too. so my suggestion in this regard is to be careful about your mind game, especially those women who have negative test results they must think on these terms and get some psychological help as well.
