I am a male and this has started happening to me. I have come to the conclusion that what contributes to my increasing sensitivity to alcohol is: age, choices of alcohol (happens when drinking 4 7.5% pints but not 4 4% pints), not eating while drinking and having eaten more than 3-4 hours prior to drinking (empty stomach). There seems to be a threshold involving these factors, and once I cross it, I can tell I am in for 24 hours of pain - the best indicator is impaired vision - images I see not registering immediately with eye movement. Can happen to me now after 3 strong pints on empty stomach but never when I was younger. For the younger people here I would recommend drinking only as part of a meal whether pub snacks, appetizers or full meal - drinking just to drink is going to lead to pain ... and other drugs like nicotine amplify the effect so adjust accordingly.

You are not imagining this. This has been happening to me too. I also believe I developed some type of allergy, or My liver is just damaged irreverasably. I get so tired when drinking, and I get drunk very quickly now. I also have terrible hangovers that can last for days if I binge drink. I have just come to the point where I am quitting completely because if I drink just 2 beers I'll have a slight hangover.

This has happened to me on and off for 10 years. I would vomit ALL day after drinking the night before, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. I finally went to the doc and I have acid reflux. I was prescribed a daily pantaprozole pill and haven't been sick since!! Inquire with your doctor. It's just a daily antacid, but stronger than over the counter.

Hi, did you ever get an answer to your question? I have the same symptoms, getting married in 2 months. Sad that I don't understand what's causing this and thinking I won't be able to have a drink at the wedding.

I am a 31 yo female. I have had this issue since my early 20’s. For me, it doesn’t matter if I have or don’t have my period. Nor does it seem to matter if I am on or not on medication. (Although I have found I do get drunk faster if I’m taking cold/allergy meds). The only thing that helps prevent this is to ensure you have a full stomach before you start drinking and then eat a full meal again before you go to bed. The other thing is to try to sober up before you fall asleep. The other thing is to come to grips with the fact that maybe we just cannot tolerate alcohol and need to reduce intake. Maybe 1-2 drinks is all I can have in a night. Even if I have just 1 glass of wine at night, I always have something to eat with it and drink it at least 2 hrs before bed. If not, I will feel ill the next day.
I have essentially cut out drinking because I am concerned of unknown long term effects. I think about friends of mine with celiacs that went undiagnosed for so long, and are now having health issues as they get older... I am concerned this may be something similar.
Good luck!

Interesting there are so many people suffering with this problem. I am a 64 year old male, could never hold a lot of liquor but maybe 8 cocktails or 8 beer in an evening without too much of a problem, just thirsty the next day. However in the last few years the amount of drinks has decreased to virtually none. Had one beer about a week ago, felt fine at bedtime. Woke up at about 5:00 AM with headache, nausea, sweating forehead, vomited a bunch next day, no painkillers will help with headache. All you can do is suffer through that day and if you live, you will feel some better the next day. I have even had this happen with a 0.5% beer. Am going to try the Vitamin B12 and/or Ranitidine tablets. But in my case, I think it is important to note that I have never been able to drink as much as some of my friends, hangovers were always much more severe, and now I am pretty well done being able to consume any amount of alcohol without inducing the aforementioned symptoms, always about 7 or 8 hours after drinking only minuscule amounts, sometimes 1/2 ounce of rum or equivalent. Hopefully someone might understand what is wrong with all of us sufferers of this unfortunate malady. I am surprised so many young people are afflicted. This is a terrible condition to have.

My Hangovers have continually get worse and worse with age. I read somewhere this had something to do with the liver not having readily detoxing enzymes available. Anyway, after trying other “Hangover Supplements” I realize none of the Hangover supplements are backed by science and were ineffective.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The first time I described my ailment, my diabetic sister told me it sounded like how she feels when she has ketoacidosis. After years of medical testing and trying everything under the sun, I read your post about pHenomenal water and I think she was on the right track all those years ago. I read up on the types of acidosis – sure, some of the symptoms did not apply, but many did – and I tried the water and other things to increase the alkalinity of my body, like more salads, more vegetables and even chlorophyll tablets. After three weeks, I went to a party and was not sick the next day, although I didn't feel 100 percent. After six weeks, I went to a party and I was absolutely fine the next day. I no longer have a problem at all! Maybe it's a cross between alcoholic acidosis (just because the metabolism of alcohol is acidic, not because we are alcoholics) and metabolic acidosis because of diet, but in any event, increasing my body's alkalinity has helped tremendously. You are right – it was a cure, at least for me.

I was a binge drinker all through high school and college and I got what I'd consider "normal" hangovers during that time... headache, dehydration, and fatigue. But around when I was 22-23, I started getting the same hangover everyone on this thread is describing. I wake up at 6-8 AM, regardless of how late I'd stayed up, and then I vomit once every 15-60 minutes for the next 8 hours. No other symptoms for me, but the nausea is debilitating. I can't eat or drink (even water), focus my eyes enough to read or watch TV, or even sleep during this time.

This has happened to me after as little as one stiff drink or after a huge night out. It does not, however, happen every time. Like some of you, I've noticed that the two mitigating factors are if I stop drinking long before I go to bed and if I eat something substantial and starchy before. If I manage to do both of these things, I'm fine, even if I've had 8+ drinks. If I have a glass of wine right before bed, my entire next day is shot.

If I can't manage to prevent nausea, I've found that not consuming ANYTHING during this period - especially water - shortens the vomiting considerably. Sometimes, I'll only throw up 2-3 times and then be okay.

With 30 approaching, after dealing with this for 6 years, I'm thinking I'll just quit drinking. I'm going to keep following this thread, though, because I'd love to find some way I can indulge responsibly. It seems like this is happening a lot to women in our twenties. I can't help but wonder if hormonal birth control is contributing?

I'm a 20 year old female. I understand I'm underage for drinking legally. But I have the same problem. I've only ever drank more than one shot twice in my life. Both times went fine except I had a rough hangover the last time. I've sipped wine, rum, vodka, etc. Just to taste it and it never bother me. Two days ago I took one sip of rum. And the next day I had the most horrible hangover. I spent the day puking my guts up, severe diarrhea, severe stomach pain, severe migraine that wouldn't go away no matter what I did, I couldn't hold anything down, not even toast or water. I went to the doctor and they diagnosed me with a stomach bug since one sip "can't cause a hangover". I was prescribed anti nausea medicine and was sent home. I don't understand. I've never had a reaction like this before. Not with a sip of alcohol. It's honestly terrifying. Although I don't care to give up drinking, I'm sad because I won't be able to enjoy a mixed drink at a restaurant on my 21st birthday, for fear of being deathly sick. If anyone has any idea what it could be please tell me

Alright guys, I think I may have the answer. I’ve had this issue since my early twenties too. About two years after the miserable hangovers started, I began getting migraines from just living my normal life. I’ve come to realize that for me, the hangovers are a major migraine with added symptoms. Alcohol is a major migraine trigger for me. As the years have gone on, I’ve gotten migraines more and more often and become more sensitive to my triggers. Onion is now a big one for me too. It’s not great news, but I hope this can help someone to make the connection sooner than I did. If you start getting daily headaches you may also be predisposed to migraine.

Wow! everything I’m reading is so relevant! I’m a 22 and I’m having the worst hangovers of my life! I’m not a big drinker and tend to have around 2-4 drinks when I’m out but wake up feeling vile the next day. Go to bed feeling fine then wake up with a migraine then moves on to sickness through the day. Can’t hold anything down and I’m only throwing up bile or water. It is definitely not normal as I know I’m not drinking a large amount! I also take birth control and wonder if this plays a major part?
