I had my GB removed in 2004 due to an infection, no option to keep it. I lost approx 25 lbs in the month following the surgery. I put back on about 35 lbs in the next 2 years. I had a lot of stomach issues depending on the food I ate. I will say that eating the same "healthy" diet you ate before will not work. Siple fact is there are foods you will not be able to eat unless you DO want to gain weight. I went for food sensitivity testing and it changed my life. I no longer eat ANY dairy unless its soy or goat milk. I eat NO eggs....none..no yolks..no whites...I avoid ALL spicy foods, I eat fish, a lot of it, I avoid suggary foods and have never been a soda drinker. Wine and beer is fine, hard booze would drive my digestion crazy..ie slowed it down....anyone that has had gb removed knows the super constipated feeling you get after eating foods that just did not agree with you.....likely foods you ate pre removeal and had no issues with.

Without a GB your entire body is thrown for a loop, hormones, digestion, food sensitivities...everything so you need to experiment and see what works.

I am now 25 lbs liter than when I had gb removed, cycle 4-6 hours a week, eat what I want ..knowing there are things I just cannot eat.

Warning...eggs are in everything!!! Read the labels, dairy is in everything read the labels.

Drink lots of water to keep your guts moving...1.5 to 3 litres a day...

STOP ALL FRIED FOODS...if you dont then dont complain about reflux and weight gain

And finally.....without the gb we dont digest fat as much as pre removal...that means we sh*t it out..it does not just magically "deposit" in our bodies....try eating fried food for 3 days and see how much time you spend on in the can...having said that eating fried food is fattening with or wothout a gb...just dont eat it....avoid ice cream

Yes I developed IBS after it was removed...avoid dairy and you will eliminate most of the issues.....and the spicy food.

Remember the provious healthy diet something from the past....forget it and devleop a new one....

Cranistan,

Thanks so much for this post. I just got my Gallbladder removed and I am looking for guideline like the one you posted. Since today is only 13 days since I got my g/b removed. I am still just adjusting to my new situation.

I will post additional details as I go through this process and I will use the guidelines provided by you and other folks here on this site.

Thanks,

I had my gb out when i was 21, i am now 30 and am struggling like mad to loose weight even though i try and manage a diet with a high protein and low fat diet and a decent exercise routine. (And for all anyone who says 'muscle weighs more then fat', correct but my body fat index does not shift)

I will tell you that after your surgery you will loose weight, i lost tons, thinnest ive ever been, then i gained allot more and ever since then my weight has been pretty steady but i struggle like crazy to loose any weight, it is possible but very hard work.

It does stand to reason that the gb helps with the fat digestion so by not having it it can be harder to loose weight.  I like the earlier suggestion of digestive aids and i am going to try that, but is glad to know there is a reason im struggling so much to loose this weight.

I myself had my gallbladder removed just over 4 years ago after multiple attacks over a 9 month period. I eventually went on instinct to get it removed and discovered that it was the best decision not to try the homoeopathic route for removing gallstones (lemon juice, apples and olive oil) since the lab test on the removed gallbladder showed it was very inflamed.

Similar to everyone else, since I had it removed i have gained about 35lbs and have been struggling to get it off with various methods and diets. I have also since been diagnosed with IBS and the GERD which was originally experienced before i had my gallbladder removed and assumed it was just due to the gallstones.

However during all of my online research, there is one website which I haven't seen anyone mention on this forum which is called

which has a wealth of knowledge and products on how to handle symptoms both before and after gallstone (gallbladder) removal, the diet and the associated weight gain which most of us who have posted experience.

I haven't been able to use the products properly - "Weight gain after gallbladder removal kit" since the cost is very prohibitive where I live in the Caribbean, but its around $170 US for a one month supply, and using that kit in conjunction with the suggested diet plan and recipe book I believe can bring a lot of relief to those suffering similar to myself.

Good luck all.

Wow, so very interesting...I also have gained weight but the weird thing is that I have always watched what I eat, could always have lost 5 to 10 lbs at different times, but a pretty healthy eater,  it came out abouut 5 months ago, all of a sudden a few weeks ago I put on 5 lbs and cannot seem to lose it..not sure what digestive enzymes are but are they the organic beet pills I have been taking, before removal they helped with reflux which by the way just about disappeared, knowing what I know I wish i would have taken better care of my gb...can anyone answer this, if your gb was not functioning well, at about 12 %, why would it seem like a big deal when it is gone? wih someone could answer...thanks so much...sally

Did you have this surgery laparoscopically? Has there ever been mention / test for "Pneumothorax" ? when the GB is removed laparoscopically, there is a small chance to puncture a lung with the cannula or if a 'veress' needle was used. also, any breast surgery? The difficulty breathing is a serious issue, please have it checked immediately, if your insurance allows, try to see a pulmonologist. I am overweight by a hundred pounds after my GB surgery, and with the added weight, I have these small panic attacks that I'm experiencing difficulty breathing. Know ing that I am still a healthy person despite my weight, I defeat these attacks with mind over matter and small meditative interludes. But still, physically speaking, there is cause for concern with how my belly fat may be interfering with my diaphragm and breathing.

I had a Gb removal back in 1981. Initially, there was some weight gain immediately following, basically due to eating many of the things I was afraid to eat for fear of a possible attack.  However, once I began eating several small meals a day and incorporated the much needed water the weight gain began to taper off. I also discovered minimizing my carb intake seemed helpful.  Keep eating right and make sure you're getting enough water.
