Same here! I had my cholecystectomy on 1 March, which was "complicated" as was written on my notes, but I have not looked back! I am losing weight and feeling better than I have in ages. I was wondering how the fat is processed now (I dont eat a lot of fat, but you do wonder what is going on without the gall bladder)), and the answer Cranistan gave above is really good advice. Take heart! If you adjust your diet and be sensible, you will feel great!

thats great info Cranistan, but it brings up more questions....if the fat is not emulsified, isn't it excreted in greater amounts because it's not bio available? how does it "build up in your system constircting organs" as you say...how is it getting into the body, out of the GI tract if not through the circ system??? I am one of those that is gaining and I am trying to process what you said about good fats not being processed to break down the bad fats...confusing..love to learn more, thanks so much

That is definitely not the case for me as I had my gallbladder removed as it was thought a likely possibility for causing pancreatitis which I had had twice (but now, it is thought it was actually my birth control pills causing the pancreatitis, not the gallbladder which looked perfect once they removed it). I have always eaten healthy and exercised heavily as a ballet dancer my whole life and after the surgery I have gained 20 lbs in a few months with the exact same diet and exercise. Before gallbladder surgery I COULD eat because I did not have mine removed for gallbladder disease, but as a possible cause for the severe pancreatitis, so the weight gain is NOT attributable to not being able to eat, but rather to now not having a gallbladder which is apparently a lot more essential to weight that the doctors told me.

I would like to say thank you Cranistan for your post on weight gain after gall bladder removal. No one told me, that this could happen, and I have been beating myself up over putting on so much weight. My Surgeon told me that once I had my gall bladder removed I could eat what I liked!

I have always been thin. But since I had gb and hundreds of stones removed, tears and leaks repaired and some bile ducts partially removed I have put on 55 pounds over 2.5 years. Totally unlike me. I am over fifty. Not a typical problem for me. I have a slim body type and a fast metabolism. It changed my system. I see everyone's posts and I think some of those who don't have this problem don't understand that it really does change your system for those who do understand and are offering suggestions, I am thankful. It is baffling. I have totally changed my diet. Not that I needed to that much. I've always eaten pretty well. Also, being over 50 or my age slows the metabolism as well. I guess I'm just sharing a little empathy.

2 weeks in is not really enough time to judge how you'll feel. I was fine for about 8 months after my surgery and the past 3 years has been horrible. All the bacteria, malabsorption, etc takes time to show up. I really hope you're still having success but it always irks me that people don't realize that 2 weeks after the surgery is not enough time to judge how it will affect you for the rest of your life.

Hello Cranistan, I love your suggestions... It's obvious that you are a healthcare provider. Thank you for providing this information.

One of my friends has also put on weight after gallbladder removal. This seems like a common pattern. It also seems that the common advice that fat is bad, is wrong. Let me explain using just common sense. After the surgery, you were probably told by your doctor to avoid fat as you won't be able to process it. If you avoid fat and gain more weight then fat is not the culprit. If you avoid the fat, than most likely you increased the consuption of carbs, probably sugar. This is what caused your weight gain. I would suggest to cut down on sugar and all processed carbs and ramp up veggies and fruit. Bear in mind that it is your liver that produces bile. It's only the storage that has been removed. The unused bile leaks into your guts and is exrceted. Adding small amounts of fat to the meals will ensure that the produced bile is put to good use. Just make sure that you don't eat trans fats - usually, man-made fats. Hope it helps :)
