This is exactly me!! I also had it put in July 2008. I used the NUvaring before having a baby but when I went back on it post breastfeeding, I had bad side effects. I am HORRIBLE at taking pills so I asked about the Mirena.

SInce I had it inserted, I've gained 10+ lbs. Even if I manage to lose a couple, they come right back. Not only have I gained those pounds but I am noticeably flabbier in my tummy and thighs no matter what I lose!

And to top it off, my skin, like others have posted, has broken out horribly on my face, neck, chest & back.

I really do not want a tubal at this point (since it won't help my horrible periods anyway) but I don't want anymore children either. But I'm not sure I should keep the Mirena after reading all of this.

I got my Mirena IUD inserted in early September 2008, since then I have gained 47 pounds!!! (My appetite greatly increased for the first couple months but then went back to normal, but my weight still increased, even though I added in regular exercise as well!) My skin and hair has become impossibly oily and gross, I have had mood swings, lack of energy, and no libido. I had it removed yesterday! Hopefully things will go back to normal soon and I can start dropping the weight!

My doctor was very sympathetic. He knows how much of a struggle I have had with my weight already. He says most women do not gain weight with Mirena, but some do... and unfortunately I was one of them. I got it inserted at my 6-week postpartum checkup, and while on it I gained twice as much weight as I did while I was pregnant!

I can totally attest to Mirena. I've had mines put in 5 years ago (normal length for this IUD) 6 weeks after giving birth to my youngest daughter. I am a typical 31 year old mother of 3 who has never taken birth control in her life because I have always been opposed to anything that had hormones in them. Here goes.........before getting pregnant with my youngest daughter I tried the "Copper IUD" for about 7 months, it was horrible; cramping, bleeding, and major pain, so I decided not to go on anything after that, which is why I had my daughter 3 years after. Well, after having her I was still undecided as to what preventive methods I would be taking. I thought what could go wrong with Mirena? I did it with no problems, didn't gain anything since I was still breastfeeding (3 years I may add), but after weening my daughter I noticed a major difference in my moods, emotions, sex life, and body. I have managed to NOT gain a whole lot of weight, but boy, my breast increased in size and my stomach has popped out (which I never have, ever). I feel so tired all the time, even if I get over 8 hrs of sleep, lazy, drained and so weird. I have to have it removed soon, but I will never opt for this again. Since it's been about 8 years when I had my copper IUD removed, I may just opt for that method...........maybe~!

I've been reading every single posts since stumbling across this website today and I am thanking GOD right now that I did. I had no idea I wasn't alone since getting on Mirena. This is truly heaven sent to know that a ton of women are in the same position I am in. I really wished I had done sooner, so thank you very much!

I am booked today to have the dam thing removed, I thought I was going mad. Like everyone else I too have put on over 11 kilos, suffer from headaches and hair loss too.

My Gyno also said its not the Mirena and talked me out of removing it a couple of weeks ago. After reading this site I am happy with my decision.
Cant wait bring on 2.20pm today.

I too decided that the mirena would be a good choice of birth control for me. I had never been able to take birth control pills as they made me sick as if I was pregnant. I am 45 years old, been married 27 years with 3 children. I had the mirena put in 14 months ago. Only recently did I realize that it was the mirena that had made me gain 18 pounds. I gained most of those 18 pound the first three or four months of having it put in. I came upon this website a couple months ago and finally put the two together. I had it taken out today. My doctor was very nice about it, but did say that it is not typical to gain weight with the mirena. I don't believe that. As I said I gained 18 pound within 14 months... gaining most of it with in the first couple months. I have done everything to try to lose it and it won't budge. It just keeps creeping up. I'm so glad I had it removed today!!! I feel in control again and not the mirena being in control. I also had major stomach bloating and enlarged breast. I've always had PMS and I don't think the mirena made it any worse. Ladies, please know you are not mistaken if you've had weight gain and have the mirena. Stop beating yourself up. I am hopeful I will loose the weight I've gained. Good luck to all of you!

I have been very interested in these posts. I had the Mirena inserted about 2 years ago and have gained 20lbs despite exercising and watching what I eat. I have done weight watchers, nutrisystem, and phenteramine during this time. This being said, I am a nurse practitioner that "knows what to do" to lose weight and be "healthy". I have never had problems with losing weight and have been puzzled by my inability to lose weight. One thing that I have noticed is that I never had trouble losing weight on the older, traditional BCP. I did gain weight with Depo-Provera, which seems to exactly mimic the problems that I am having now. I have made an appointment with my GYN to discuss this, and likely have the Mirena taken out. Although I love the flexibility of the Mirena, having a weight gain that is so difficult to lose is not what I had planned.

I would like to see post from those who have had the Mirena remove to see if this resolved some of the issues.

Okay... I got my mirena in January 2008... I love being period-free, but I weighed 130 when I got the thing, now I am bouncing between 150-155. It's never made sense why I've gained weight until now. I didn't have a car from March until August of last year and WALKED EVERYWHERE - but kept putting on the weight. I'm over it... Out it comes.

My question is - does the weight pretty much melt off after I get the wretched thing out of my body?

I got my Mirena in Feb. 2009. My sitter said that one of her friends had gained 15 pounds with the IUD so I asked my dr about it. I was assured that the hormone levels are so low that weight gain shouldn't be an issue. It doesn't matter what I do I keep gaining weight. I have also had bleeding every day of some sort since I had it inserted. My tubes are tied so I got it due to a medical condition (which it has helped) but this weight gain is awful. I see myself on home videos and I can't believe it. Back to the medical condition - before IUD I didn't want to have intercourse because it was painful and I would bleed afterwards; now I don't want to have intercourse because I'm always bleeding. Go figure! I'm going to talk to my dr about having it removed and talk to him about whether a hormone free IUD will help my medical condition. Best of luck to all who have issues with this.

Hi! I have had the Mirena for nearly 4 years and in that time gained more and more weight. I went to the gym everyday for a year and was still getting bigger and heavier - I have stopped now and it hasn't made any difference! I always put my weight gain down to being on anti-depressants but since reading this forum I am more convinced of getting mine removed. Has anyone had theirs removed and can report weight loss? or once you have lost the weight you feel so good you forget to report back on the forum? Looking forward to hearing some positive feedback.

I have had my Mirena in for almost a month and have had no spotting or bleeding since insertion. Actually, I have not had any cramping or whatnot since then either. Until yesterday... which is when I was due for my period. I waited the suggested amount of time before I had sex(said in the pamphlet 24-48 but I waited longer..approx. 72hrs, maybe longer)l and I have started to get bloating, nausea, breast tenderness, a bit of a distended abdomen, bit of discharge(which is clear and mucusy), and some cramping which started yesterday. Is this normal? Should I be taking a hpt test? I know that the Mirena can cut out periods all together, but within the first month? So im a little concerned. But, once I saw that the side effects of the Mirena was the same as the symptoms I am having, I was a little relieved but, still not convinced nothing is wrong. Any suggestions?

Hello Ladies,
I am a 40 year who had my son after a 15 year span between children. Three years prior to my last child born in October 2008, I had lost 151 pounds from healthy dietary changes and exercising. I gained maybe 15 pounds during my pregnancy and lost 12 of the 15 pounds after delivering my son. Six weeks after childbirth, I was back into all of my old clothes with a few inches to play. I had the IUD placed at or about the 7-8 week after child birth Maybe around Late Nov or early Dec 2008. It is now less than one year later and I have gained about 45-60 pounds. I am still eating healthily and not exercising as much because the continuing weight gain is overbearing. I am depressed and hate to look at myself in the mirror. I am definitely not one who wanted to regain any wight after working three years to get the weight off and keep it off. I know it is this IUD. I am now exercising 3 times a week instead of 5 days a week but My diet is even more strict. No weight loss at all. I feel bloated and maintain water retention alot. My periods are irregular and involve spotting of dark brown substances for about 10 days whenever it is present. I have never gained weight this fast even when I was heavier about 5 years ago. Now I eat healthy and exercise and I am gaining weight like MAD. I seem to be at a plateau with the 53 pound weight gain. I have been contemplating having the IUD removed for health reasons but I didn't want to get pregnant. After reading your posts, I think I will have it removed. The health risk just out way the risk of pregnancy.

Like so many of you, I have the same story. I weighed near 130 after my kids and since having Mirena inserted I have gained 20 pounds which is not normal for me. I have also had horrible acne and terrible mood swings for the 1.5 years I had it in. I just had it removed two days ago and I am hoping for things to return to normal.
