Yikes! I had the Mirena before, but it was in for 7 years. The last two years, I lost weight and looked great. I just had a new one put in, and within a week I've gained 5 pounds and my face is puffy! Now I'm realizing that during the last two years the progesterone probably wore off and that's why my weight dropped. 5 pounds in a week, though, is incredible! I feel very puffy and unattractive, and my clothes are tight. Ugh. And this thing was very expensive to have put in!! I'm going to restrict my eating extensively over the next two weeks (I already am vegetarian and eat lightly) and increase my exercise and see if that helps. Just two weeks ago I had women in their twenties asking me how I stayed so fit (I'm in my 40s) and now I feel like a blob. Sigh.

WOW!!! I had my IUD put in Jan 2006 and it recently expired. I have been tired constantly and have my period again which is probably the most depressing thing ever.
My normal weight pre-Mirena was 95-105lbs and I have weighed 112 - 120 for the past five years. I didn't think for a second that it was the mirena because I'm "getting old". I just turned 29. I specifically asked the doctor about weight gain and he said only 1 in 100,000 gain weight and that even then it was never more than 10lbs.
I work out excessively, sometimes three two hour sessions in a day. Lots of cardio as I run triathalons. Never did I think my weight gain was due to my IUD. Now I can't wait to get it out!!! Although my weight gain has had it's benefits; I was always under the weight requirements for my job) I can't wait to look like I did 5 years ago!!!
Thank you all for sharing and good luck! I'm getting mine out ASAP!!! (Still not looking forward to having my periods again though).

I cant believe i am reading all this! Everything everyone has written here is exactly what has been happening to me. I have had the IUD for the past year because my doctor recommended it to me because he said i would not put on any weight.....BOY WAS HE WRONG. For the past year i thought my weight gain (13kgs) was due to a thyroid problem. When the thyroid test came back clear i just thought it was my age...even though i am only 27. The feeling of being bloated and fat i am all too sick of, the acne on my face is like i am in pubity again, the amount of food i eat has doubled, looking after 2 kids and working full-time and feeling sooooo tired all the time. When i first has the IUD put in i recommended it to a friend.....5 months later and she is on anti-depressants. Boy do i feel bad. As soon as i read all your comments i made an appointment at the doctor to get it out!! :'(

I can't believe I'm reading this! I've had the Mirena for about a year and a half now and I keep gaining weight. I've always had a lean build, but now I'm easily at the heaviest I've ever been! I eat a very healthy diet and stay active - I'm constantly running after 18 month old twins! But I keep gaining weight! I have had thyroid tests and they all come back normal. This board has given me the hope that having the Mirena removed will help me lose the weight. I'm having mine taken out today!

Wow.. I can totally relate to all these posts. I've been reading all of them all afternoon. My first Mirena was put in in 2003 or so and I was quite overweight at the time (180lbs). But in 2006 I got a great personal trainer and ate way better and lost weight to 150lbs which is my ideal weight for my height and frame. I maintained that weight for 2-3 years by still eating well and exericising alot. In 2009, I realized my mirena must have expired so in Sept 2009, i got a new one inserted. Since then ie within 1.5 years, I have gained about 25 lbs despite the same workout regime and healthy diet. I can also identify with the low sex drive and mood swings and often feel depressed. So fustrating, I made an appt to see my Dr to get my thyroid checked out tomorrow, but now after reading all these posts, I'm going to ask her to remove my mirena! I dont' really need it for birth control anymore as my husband has had a vesectomy (we have 2 kids already) but liked it for lightening my periods. As well, I've had to wear a tampon daily to put up with that nasty discharge from the mirena! But even that is tolerable whereas the weight gain is absolutely NOT!

I would like to know for those people who have had this removed... were you able to loose the weight? I love the Mirena for no period but my weight gain is out of control. Is loosing the weight more do-able with it being removed?

I am 50 years old and I had the Mirena fitted 15 months ago for heavy, painful periods. I started noticing weight gain 2 months ago. With no change to my diet or excerise routine, I was surprised to find that I had put on 15 pounds in a month. After visiting the doctor, she was even more surprised when she recorded a gain of 9.5lbs in a week !!!! I have had a lot of different tests which have all come back clear. Therefore, needless to say, I will be making an appointment to have it removed as soon as possible. I am willing to put up with heavy periods but not with getting bigger and bigger with no end in sight.

omg ladies!! i stumbled on this site when checking to see whether mirena was the cause of my being tired constantly, im as tired as i as when i was in my first trimester of pregnancy....i HAD NO IDEA THAT IT CAUSED WEIGHT GAIN...i weighed 135 pre baby and 140 after i had him, now after 18 months on mirena i weigh every bit of 170 and i work out and eat healthy and the weight won't budge....I am miserable and my face is fat, feet look swollen...to others i look fine because i have a very athletic build so i carry the weight well, however i KNOW my body and this is not me...I am getting mine taken out this week its like i was brought to this site for a reason....it all makes sense! this thing causes weight gain...i havent had a period in forever so i am going to miss that part, but i'd rather be at a healthy weight again...can we PLEASE get some updates from those who had it removed???

I am so relieved to know that there are others just like me! I've had my mirena for just over a year now, and I've gained a whopping 103 lbs!!! I've tried just about everything to try and shake the weight, which has made me really depressed and self-conscious, but nothing works! and the weight gain hasn't stopped either! I keep gaining more and more weight no matter what I do. Maybe I really should have it removed and see what happens... some advice on the matter would really be more than welcome...

HEY!! so i hadn't even thought about the mirena being the problem until last week my bf had asked if it was a side effect... i have had it almost TWO YEARS and gained bout SIXTY_FIVE POUNDS....I eat good.. exercises...chase two kids all day. We were thinkin it was my thyroid and even had it chekked.. I had mine REMOVED today after seeing people with the same effect... i can say the doctor tried to give me the 'BIRTH CONTROL PILLS HAVE MORE HORMONES IN UR SYSTEM THEN THE MIRENA IS ONLY IN UR UTERUS".... but seriously... why would SO MANY people have the same issue... im going back to the old school way... i just got some called SAFYRAL.. we'll see how they work...

I had got the mirena cause it was the 'easy fix' 5 years no worry... and medicaid paid for the whole thing... apparently "i got what i paid for"

I posted on here 8 months ago regarding my weight gain with the Mirena Coil. I had it removed 6 months ago and have never felt better. I had an horrific period the month after removal but hardly anything since. I have lost all the weight I gained and I am overjoyed.  I hope this helps all the ladies who are considering removal.

Hi LAdies, I stumbled across this site and was wondering if anyone has actuallynputnon the weight and bloating after the removal of the IUD. I had mine out in on 25th OCt and after weeks of pain and beging, found that's when it was inserted the dr penetrated my uterus. My Obgyn that deliverd my daughters took over my care and discovered the IUD imbedded in my bowel wrapped in fat. It was surgically removed on 7th dec and I have had a constant weight gain and bloating ever since, no matter what I do. Has this happened to anyone else, if so how long did it take to stop and for the weight to start dropping.
