I'm a new runner, transitioning from swimming, and I've been having a lot of pain lately. I've been running several times a week for about 6 months now and its only gotten progressively worse. Basically within 10 minutes, my shins feels like its going to break in half (I'm assuming these are shin splints) and I get excruciating tightness up the side of my lower leg originating from my ankle bones. It sometimes gets to the point where I'm writhing on the floor in pain. I even bought new shoes a month ago, but they've made no difference. This is especially bad on the treadmill, although I get the same pain road running but at a much farther distance.

Any advice?? I've tried resting, stretching, icing, and cross-training but nothing has seemed to make a difference :(
My suggestion, make certain you are going to a sports doctor. There is a difference. If you find out there is nothing but soft tissue. I would suggest ART (Active Release Technique).
My field is sports medicine, I have seen the best results with this technique. Being a 1/2 Ironman Triathlete, I can tell you- ART is worth its weight in gold!
