Hello,

I was at countryside last weekend and I developed some weird itchy, red rash. My doctor first told me to try and see if Benadryl will help and I’ve been using it for the last three days with rash not spreading any further, but it’s not subsiding either. I’m supposed to see my doctor next week, but this rash is so irritating and I’ve been searching online and found that perhaps Allegra might be better in my case.

Besides Benadryl being over the counter med, and Allegra prescription one, what else is different between these two medications?

Hello,

just one benefit from getting a prescription medication is that it's very likely to be cheaper, especially if you have to use it over the longer time.

But the major difference between Allegra and Benadryl is their active ingredient - it's fexofenadine hydrochloride for Allegra, and Benadryl's active ingredient is diphenhydramine. They are both antihistamines, but Allegra formulation I think also has much more active time for a single dose and it doesn't cause sleepyness and drowsiness usually associated with Benadryl.
