Less than 24 hours after my surgey i've been eating pasta, chicken, carrots, peas, popsicles, soup, slim fast, ice creme etc and it only hurts as much as strep did. I dont know why but I would think it would hurt much worse but I guess not.

I cannot believe all the hype about go ahead and eat solid foods Im a 29 year old female who on april 1st just had an adnoidectomy and tonsilectomy done and i will tell you what It is the worst paine i have ever gone through and I have had two children. Im on day 7 now and im starving soo bad from not being able to eat I can barely swallow water. Im on a steady regimen of tylinol with codine and(lortab) amoxicillen and some other throat numbing head dizzying drug lidocaine alot of narcotics going on and ice packs ive tried flavorice jello pudding eggs to no avale the egg got caught in where my tonsils were taken out i had a heck of a time trying to get the egg out by garggling the jello was i have to say the only thing to eat because it slides down your throat , pudding made my spit thick and yuckky. Im at my wits end iv lost 10 pounds so far and my jaw hurts I called my dr office and all they said was it was going to hurt and that adults have a waay harder time bouncing back from this sort of surgery where as kids tend to heal more quickly ?? I would love to tell you to go have a hamburger but if you want the truth read Guest's post for june 17th 09? or was it 2010 hers is exactly how it has gone for me I was starting to think i wrote that post in my sleep it couldnt have been more to the truth why would one set of eent Dr.'s tell you to eat normal foods to heal quicker and other eent Dr.'s tell you its gonna hurt like a B****rd and to drink pleanty of fluids nothing citrus cause it will burn and maybe start soft foods after day 8 ? that makes more sence to me? Im telling you unless you really need this surgery reconsider waiting it really really really HURTS !

I had tonsil surgery four days ago and I haven't eaten a single thing. I can't. It burns, and my tongue and throat is swollen so I can barely get down my medicine every four hours for the pain. It's just horrible. All I can eat is ice, and it barely fits in my mouth. I have to melt it since my mouth is swollen...

26 yr old female here. I've got a very strong history of recurrent pharyngitis/strep (aka: sore throats). My ENT took my tonsils and adenoids out two days ago, Friday morning. I was under anesthesia for about 30 minutes and was told that I didn't have a large amount of bleeding because of an excessive amount of scar tissue on my tonsils. No nausea out of surgery and I slept for most of the day. I was able to eat a very small amount of Jello on day one (stay away from red since it may mask bleeding). The first time I took the hydrocodone elixir it hit the places where my tonsils used to be and stung so bad that I was writhing in pain, not something I'm normally given to doing. Now I'm careful to take it in a way that doesn't throw it to the back of my throat first.
Day two: I made egg drop soup for dinner after being able to eat only jello for breakfast. (quick recipe: thicken chicken broth with cornstarch, add a dash of ginger and scramble an egg. Slowly drizzle egg into boiling, thickened chicken broth and voile, egg drop soup). We had a dinner party with cornbread muffins. They sounded so good that I smashed one up, added a bit of butter and milk and ate it like soup.
Day three: More egg drop soup. Can't get anything else down, except a very large amount of water. I did have a cupcake this evening in very very small bites and washing it down with lots of water.

I'm hoping to expand to mashed potatoes tomorrow, but I'm not sure it'll happen. I've been taking the pain meds every 4 hours (sometimes 3.5) and I haven't had a large amount of pain. Mostly a lot of discomfort, but no real pain. I can feel the big yellow/white scabs in the back of my throat very distinctly. They had to crank my mouth open to get to my tonsils and my jaw is a bit sore from that. Kind of like after wisdom tooth extraction.

No way, in 2 days. The absolute minimum is 4 or 5 days IMO. The pain is the worst for some ppl at day 4/5 , for some on day 7. Either way you will not be very productive at all and might actually get yourself fired if you go to work too early.

i'm a 19 y/o female and i'm on day 6 after the tonsillectomy. i've been eating pretty normal foods since day 2 (like pasta, sandwiches, pancakes, egg and bacon on toast). i was told to eat "rough foods" and although it's not comfortable eating them, it certainly takes away the awful taste more than ice cream does and it will stop scabs forming, which will just cause a longer recovery and more pain in the long term. i have to be honest with you, it's not a nice operation, but eating well will reduce your recovery time, so it's worth pushing through with it xx

I am getting my tonsils and adnoids out next Tuesday and I'm feeling really nervous. I am 16 years old and I keep on hearing different opinions on what to eat and what not to eat after the surgery. Help!

I'm 16 and had my tonsils taken out 4 days ago. I've been sleeping a lot and watching a lot of TV because my pain meds make me nauseous. As for food, the hospital had me eat some applesauce before I left, which goes down easier cold. I had very little Jello and applesauce the first two days, like two bites every hour. I drank lots of water though! Water soothes your throat and helps keep mucus away. On day two, I had a few soft noodles for dinner. Day three I had one scrambled egg for breakfast, no lunch (I was sleeping!), and some mashed potato for dinner. Now it's day 4 and I might have a little bit of Mac n Cheese.
The pain is minimized if you keep up with your pain meds and drink water!!

had tonsils out 5 days ago the pain really really sucks late at night and first thing in the morning every time i swallow its like swallowing glass and being stabbed in the ear, was told to eat normal which is a hell of a task i only eat toast and water the toast i find kinda soothing afterwards and clears out that ucky taste although takes halfhour to eat 1 slice. sinking the pain meds every hour until my daily doses run out then i wait for the pain to return and just have to suck it up till the next day cant wait till its over maybe soon just maybe

Eating normal food is the best pain killer. My daughter has just had her tonsils and ads out and while in hopsital, any kids that were eating loads needed less pain relief. U gotta force food down u otherwise the tissue will build up and cause infection

I Just had my tonsils and adenoids out just 3 days ago. Im 14 also. I have done a bunch of research because of course with every one dealing with this it is very painful to swallow ! At first I tried Ice Cream and popsicles and they will not help you at all because they are very cold and will cause a bunch of mucus in the throat. But cold water helps alot and suprisingly so does Jell-O (home made ) ! Jello helps because it slides down your throat but make sure it isn't thick and a little watery ! Try not to use straws when drinking because it is very easy to hit the surgical area ! Hope this helped out a little bit (:

So today is day three after my tonsils and adenoids. We're removed. I don't care what anybody says, stay away from ice cream or anything sugary! I was so happy last night with the prospect of having a homemade banana milk shake. My husband went to the store and I made it right away. With the first sip the sugar felt like acid in the back of my throat. I have been living on jello alone, because every time I try to swallow thin liquids it goes up the back of my nose before it goes down my throat due to the massive swelling. I can not imagine this pain getting even worse. My glands in my neck and under my chin are so swollen and tender I can barely move my head. I knew this would be bad but I had no idea. I just really hope it helps with my infections Good luck to everyone who decides to do this. Just remember to make sure the rewards are going to be great because this is terrible pain. Easily the worst surgery I've had which is saying a lot, I have had 8 abdominal surgerys.
