It's the 4th day my son got his tonsils out can he eat mac and cheese
This is the worst thing I have heard of. This could kill you. I don't know if you got the same thing done as me, where the surgeon cauterized everything in my throat. This is why they say to eat only foods that are soft. If you eat anything crusty or hard you can cut your throat and this will cause you to bleed. If this happens you call 911 immediately and I am guessing they take you back in for surgery.
I had my tonsils out on Thursday and it's now Sunday - and I want spaghetti bolognese for dinner. I feel like the only one who doesn't think this is horrific?! Don't get me wrong - it hurts, I have been up and down with crying etc. but I have been eating toast since the day after following the recommendation of the hospital in London I went to.
Hello, I'm 42 years old and just had my tonsils out and I'm on day 4. I'm not sure what I was thinking as day 1 and 2 I figured the pain was doable and that this surgery might have been overstated...it just didn't occur to me that I still had the anesthesia in my system and it would gradually get worse. On yesterday, it definitely became evident that it was just the beginning as my tongue and throat was very swollen and the pain started in my neck and slightly in my ears. There is something weird "dangling" in the back of my throat, but I'm not bothering it, I just keep sipping my water and hopefully it will go away. Sleeping is just horrible, as I had to figure out that you must be propped up to prevent any issues with bleeding into your nose and keep down on swelling, which happened my first few hours at home apparently. My diet has been LOTS of water, protein drinks, chicken broth/pureed chicken soup, jello cups, popsicles. I also purchased frozen yogurt, italian ice cups, greek yogurt, almond milk (which shouldn't leave a mucus film like milk), pudding, cream of wheat and oatmeal which I may start to eat possibly by Day 7 or 8 depending on how well I'm swallowing my chicken puree soup. So far, the pureed chicken with broth is tolerated well, and I chase it down with more water, as that seemingly works with everything. I also seem to be terribly gassey, which I'm sure is due to the constant trying to sip water and get it down. It takes several small swallows, just to get down one gulp of water. I saw some other replies say that had they had an opportunity to do it again, they wouldn't get this surgery, well, I'm definitely feeling that on Day 4. I'm not really looking forward to days 5 through 7 as my ENT says it was most likely be the worst of it, but I'm making sure to keep my pain pills on hand and constantly drink water, which I keep everywhere I am. I'm also noticing today that I'm having some extra sensitivity to sounds, everything is just too loud right now, so I have to keep sounds around me to a minimum. I'm told to avoid all milk based products as they do create a mucous film in the back of the throat, which I can't afford to have, so almond milk and water based products for the next 6 days it is!!
All I've been eating is Mac and cheese but it drives me nuts how when i swallow it feels like the noodles get stuck In my throat(+_+)
THE TONGUE THING HAPPENED TO ME TO
You so feel my pain. I love you lol
Its best not to eat ice cream it makes them flemmy or have mucus
I’m 33 and had my tonsils out 10 days ago. The worst pain of my life. I was told it was gonna be painful but never thought it would be this bad.
I couldn’t eat and haven’t been able to drink much. Today was the first day I’ve actually managed some mashed potato and baked beans.
I have an infection so maybe that’s why it’s taken me longer to recover.
I haven’t been able to sleep because the pain has been so bad. It’s worse than child birth & gallbladder surgery.
Pain killers that the hospital gave me didn’t touch the pain. I finally got stronger ones and am on antibiotics.
I’ve never cried so much and been so down and frustrated with the pain. Just to swallow saliva was hell.
Not forgetting the smelly breath. Luckily I couldn’t smell it cos I’ve had a rotten cold too (unless that’s a side effect).
The pain hasn’t just affected my throat, it was my ears and teeth too. Even my scalp has been feeling really uncomfortable. I honestly wouldn’t have had this done if I knew what the pain was going to be like. Even now it’s still hurting to swallow and hurts to talk. On the plus side, I’ve lost over 14lb in 10days! Haha
Good luck to anyone due to have it done.

So I had my tonsils removed 02/13/18. I was instructed to drink 1 oz of water per pound that I weigh. That was no big deal because the cold water helped so much! I guess I have a high pain tolerance bc I was eating KFC mashed potatoes same day along with pudding, fudge pops, and yogurt. Every day I would drink between 150-200oz of water a day. On day 2 I tried scrambled eggs and grits but it didn’t work out for me. So I stuck with KFCs mashed taters and max and cheese. I’m on day 3 and I’m so over sweets. I’m now turning to soups. I think the most pain I had was today, but after drinking come cold water and taking my meds which were mainly ibuprofen. (Tylenol is not going to help bc it’s for fever, where ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory med). When I had breakthrough pain I would take my liquid pain meds. I was also prescribed amoxicillin for 7days.
If it wasn’t for the fact the dr wants me out of work for the week I would have returned today. I work as a medical assistant so I can just do front desk things and not talk since my voice is all wacky. I guess my experience is going great to what I’ve read about.
Best of luck to all !

I don't think you should have a hot dog or a hamburger before your tonsils are healed.
for the first 2-3 days eat cold foods like yogurts, popsicles, and ice cream, puddings, and jellos since those are the days you're going to be sore. During the 4-6 days same thing but add broth from soup, or applesauce, oatmeals. Improvise the soup like making a creme mushroom soup or vegetable soup, just avoid tomato, because of its acidity and can damage the tissue. By the 7-10 days get him eating more mac and cheeses, pasta, eggs, anything solid but soft foods until two weeks have gone by. after two weeks your throat should be heal and you can eat whatever you like.
just a heads up do not use anything the color red it can look like blood and then you will not be able to tell if it is actual blood(which is a serious problem and need to go to ER) it is the stain from your food
Thank you so much. Your post was a godsend.
How long after a tonsil surgery do I need to wait before I can eat tortilla chips and salsa?
