when I woke up I noticed a brownish red discharge in my under pants? mum said it's my first period

Im 13, and today when I awake I noticed a brown-ish red discharge in my under pants. So I told my mum, and she said i started my first period. So I was like, okay. But, after like 30 minutes or so of putting on a pad, there was a nothing. Was it just spotting?? Although a lot of brown red stuff  was there??? Very confused!!
