In some conservative cultures, breaking of the hymen (irrespective of how it is broken--whether doing physical activity or having sex) WAS/IS considered loss of virginity (I am not sure if this stereotype still exists, it probably does). This may look illogical to some of you, but this was/is considered the only way to determine whether the girl is sexually pure or not. So, after marriage, usually after the first night, the husband himself would expect to see blood on the bedsheet (which would be the result of the hymen breaking during penetration). If he doesn't, he might get suspicious and the girl would be subject to all sorts of humiliation and embarrassment, either from the family, the husband, or both! This probably sounds ridiculous, but believe it or not, it is true and has happened before!!
Any woman/girl who honestly remains a virgin till marriage, or does not believe in pre-marital sex, would not like to lose such an important level of trust from her in-laws and especially her husband! Thus, it is only natural for girls from such cultural backgrounds (or those exposed to such beliefs)to ask a question like 'whether inserting a tampon/ breaking the hymen' will make you lose your virginity. So, all those answering this question (westerners, I presume), please get this straight first! The question probably sounds illogical, but it is a genuine issue and stems from specific cultural beliefs: In other words,
presence of blood (breaking of the hymen) after the first intercourse = the girl is virgin, and virtuous!
Now, of course there are several other factors at play here that may cause the hymen to break, such as doing different kinds of physical activity (like horseback riding). Some may not even bleed during their first intercourse (this probably is because the hymen is broken already, or in other cases, it does not tear at all) Hence, there is all the more stronger concern of keeping one's hymen intact prior to marriage, or first intercourse.
Now getting to the issue of tampon usage and breaking of the hymen: yes, it is possible that you might break/tear your hymen during tampon use. However, the hymen is a stretchable piece of skin with a hole (vagina) in it. The hymen, in other words, borders the vagina. You can actually see it, if you use a mirror. Its the tender pink skin that surrounds/borders the entrance of the vagina.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

Now during penetration, especially for women who have a smaller vagina entrance, their hymen, or the pink skin surrounding the entrance will tear, and consequently bleed. Yet for others, this may not be the case, especially if they have toyed (penetrated themselves with foreign objects, or engaged in constant fingering) with themselves before, and have managed to actually stretch the hymen-hole without actually tearing it. So, in other words, the hymen that surrounds the vagina is stretchable. But if you are brash with yourself, you can tear it. If you want to be extremely careful and not break your hymen, 1. Use a plastic tampon that has the lowest/minimum absorbency. This is important because you don't want to suffer from TSS or Toxic Shock Syndrome which can be caused when you use a higher absorbency tampon. The first time I used one was the Tampax Pearl 'lites'. It has the color code, lavender. The other color codes for tampons are: yellow for regular, Green for super, Orange is for super plus. Please stay away from the greens and orange coded tampons because all tampons expand when it starts to absorb (test one by pouring some water on an exposed tampon). So the greens and oranges become ginormous (according to my standards) and will be harder to remove once it goes in. 2. When removing the tampon, remember to pull at it from the diagonal position (just as you should insert from a diagonal position, squat a little if you have to). Pull gently, take a deep breath, relax and just pull the string gently.. it should come out just fine without tearing, or affecting your hymen cuz the tampon is just cotton after all. If you remember, your hymen IS stretchable. So, if you are gentle, when inserting and removing the tampon, there is no way you can tear it. Only if you yank it out of you, the chances of you breaking your hymen are bigger. Yes it is effective, but there is the possibility of TSS which can be fatal in severe/extreme cases. You would have to be highly absent-minded (leaving the tampon in you for hours) for that to happen! I personally use tampons only if I have to go swimming or to the pool. For other regular period days, I use pads, just because they are so much more safer and I don't have to worry about the hymen and all that jazz in the first place! :P

You can still have a period even if you have a hymen. It only blocks about half of the vagina. It is true some women don't have a hymen, and other women have ones that do cause their period to be lighter because their hymens cover most of the opening.

Hahaha to this day I am not even certain if I had one or not! I lost my virginity at age 23 and while it hurt for the first five seconds, it didn't bleed at ALL! :)

But as for the tampon question- nope, you probably cannot break it by wearing tampons- even the big ones are too small. I was very scared to use them at first for the same reason because back then I was still a virgin, but I became allergic to pads so I had no other choice- virgin or not! I still had the same "first time" pain that most women do, so I suppose that if I DID have a hymen, it may have stretched instead of tore. :)

You can't "break" you hymen. You simply stretch it. All a hymen is a small mucus membrane, and when an object (such as a tampon, fingers, a penis) penetrates into your vagina it may be stretched. However, if a for a long period of time passes where nothing penetrates the vagina it can go back to or near where the hymen was placed before.

ok i have no idea if my hymen is broken or not ! i definitely dont wanna go to a doctor!! but how easily can a hymen be broken ?!! i've never had any kind of sexual intercourse or anything !! im kinda of embarrassed to say this but ill just saying it !! last year i discovered smth ! the thing is that my feet were hurting so bad from walking so i went to the bathroom and where i live there are these tubes of water in every bathroom so i used it to wash ! but then i noticed that with the strong flow of water my feet started to hurt less to the extent i couldnt feel them !! i know it might sound strange ! but is there a chance that my hymen was broken cuz of that cuz it had this weird feeling (not necessarily bad) !! i heard people u can see ur hymen using a mirror but i tried and couldnt see anything ! (though im not sure how a hymen looks like anyway)!! but plz let me know if u can help !! and as i said i never had sex nor masturbated except if that thing with the water was kinda of masturbating somehow ?!!

not sure if it was hymen but there is this thing where girls can insert a tampon but can not get it out because the skin is still there in the middle so you can get it in but is VERY painful to get out. this may be what you have or what you had have (because you cut it lol) and if the skin is still there and partly closed but open on the left or right side (or similar to that) you can get surgery to remove it. hope this helped (sorry there is a particular name for this when it happens but i totll forgot so you migt have to do your research)
