I think for some of us, this is exactly the case. I've never ever had these before. I've also never ever drank until this year (20 years old). I just had my 21st birthday about a week and a half ago. 4 days ago my right upper tonsil started hurting with each swallow. today (day 4) I swallowed and something started rubbing on the back of my tongue. i went to the bathroom and looked into the mirror and could see off-white stuff back there. I put my finger up against my tonsil and gently pushed. a couple of small stones came out. another push forced out a very large lima bean size chunk.

I'm pretty sure its related to drinking alchohol. and I'm think beer specifically. before my 21st, I had drank a couple of times, but only hard liquor. I only drank liquor on my 21st as well. but the next day I drank about 5 cans of beer.

and now I have tonsil stones.

i also get these smelly things out of the left/right crevis in my mouth

i started getting them after i had tonsilitis when i was 18(im 20 now), they look like the picture on the previous pages, i've never smoked nor drank ever, im a very healthy bmi, i dont solder or smoke pot as some reasons in previous posts may say, so i dont think thats the cause, just dead stuff that gets stuck in there, food/mouth skin/teeth poo

if i open my mouth i can see them in the left and right, i found that heavy breathing/exercise gets them out and god do they smell, (i like to squish and smell them too %-) )

they make my breath smell rank, gargeling often and thoroughly helps stop them and bad breath

Hi everyone,
I have had these tonsil stones for at least 5 years or so now, for the first year or two I couldn't figure out what they were. My family doctor didn't know what they were either, but I have since changed doctors and my new doctor has told me they are tonsil stones. I still have my tonsils and the stones are food pieces that get stuck in the holes in the tonsils and they pretty much rot there (reason for the bad breath and the awful smell of these things). The only thing I can't understand is how the holes got there in the first place. Im curious has anyone had a sore throat alot with these? I have one constant when they are present, also an itch in the ear that I can't get to. Thanks for any replies...

I too, have had these tonsil stones for some time now. It started with a sore throat and swollen tonsils and now evry couple of weeks the white things appear and i usually get them out with a q-tip- also taking thhe cotton part of the q-tip off and just using the stick works well too. I have noticed also that my ear ithces and my throat is kinda sore, too. I think its normal but i do think sugar plays a role. I notice it get worse if i eat mints, hard candy...or actually anything with corn starch.

I have gotten these since childhood and they get coughed up most frequently when I run or do jiu-jitsu, particularly when people put pressure on my neck for chokes. The tips on removing them are helpful. I figured getting my tonsils removed is THE solution. Maybe I'll just grab my soldering iron...

So I awoke one morning with bad breath but thats normal obviously... My bad breath continued all day.. and the next day and the day after that. I had no idea why my breath smelt so bad. Thanks to this website I finally realized what my problem was. It's tonsil stones or otherwise known as tonsillolith, calculi of the tonsil or bad breath ball. For the past month or so I've been suffering with this. I have had a sore throat constantly pretty much and lots of phlegm this is contributed to allergies because its the summer and my allergies are always terrible in the summer. But the breath problem I finally realized what the problem was. I simply placed a q-tip at the back of my throat into a pocket close to the tonsils and voila! two small white particles that smelt disgusting popped out. I guess it's a common problem. I'll just continue to clear my throat and cough up these food particles to get rid of these awfully smelly food particles. Thanks to this website and people who also have this problem my bad breath is no more. thanks again. I suggest those who would like to do more reading on this topic check out this website on wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsillolith

I get these nasty things all the time. The best way to clear them out is with a water pik. Put it on the lowest setting (any higher and you could make your tonsil bleed a little...not good I'm sure) and put the end of the nozzle either in one of those craters or under the flap on the side of the tonsil. You will be amazed at the size, number, and color of chunks you'll remove the first time you do it. After that just do it regularly, like every couple weeks or so. I find this keeps them fairly under control, and I like knowing that I just flushed them all out at once.

Well, finally some other folks with this weird malady.

Do not poke down your throat with anything. You'll notice that these things come out more often during physical activity. Learn to flex the muscles in your throat and then give a gentle clearing.

As far as the cause, it seems to be somewhat related to sinus issues and mucus. I don't smoke, drink alcohol or solder. 8) For most of my adult life I have suffered with periodic, but horrific sinus infections. The kind of sinus clogging, breath-halting doozies that take you out of action for 3 days. Then last year I gave up drinking milk at the coaxing from my fiancee. Whaddya know, I haven't had one of those for a year now! Now I drink Soy milk and the suffering seems to be over.

However, the little off-white asteroids just keep appearing. Oddly, it seems like they are more persistent than ever! So, I'm not sure dairy products are the cause either. Again, these appear to be mucus related.

Nice to find out I wasn't going nuts and that other people have this too. I wonder what we are talking here, 1 in 20 people?

I get white/green ones. They don't seem to have a smell until I break them open. I haven't ever had anyone complain to me that I have bad breath, but who knows.

- I don't eat meat of any kind
- I don't eat eggs
- I don't eat anything with dairy in it
- I don't partake of drugs, cigarettes or alcohol (but when I was younger I used to smoke pot)

Yet I still get them, and I think I know why:

- Potato chips! I only eat the Baked variety that are non-greasy, but that doesn't seem to matter - they are crunchy hard high-carb foods.
- Flossing! If you don't take the tiny amount of effort it takes to remove all sources of food for bacteria in your mouth, guess what... bacteria are gonna grow! And stink!!
- Gargling! Why else would you gargle? It's to remove c**p built up in the back of your throat. Use salt water or a mouthwash that is non-alcohol and non-sugar.

And voila if you avoid the junk food (even the kind that claims to be a little healthier), and keep the landing pad for food free and clear of debris through proper maintenance, I think you'll find you suffer a lot less without need for surgery to hack off a part of your body :-)

The best thing to do if you don't want to get surgery is to gargle your throat with 50% sea salt, 50% hot/warm water. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon or evening. (1 cup, use entire contents, each gargle should be 10-15 seconds) Make sure the salt dissolves completely before gargling. I have had this problem in the past. I gargled for 2 weeks and it went away for 3 years but it came back and all I had to do was gargle again for a few weeks and it went away hopefully it will be a few years until it comes back. You can maintain a bacteria-free throat if you gargle once or twice every week or so for the rest of your life... This problem is caused by food build-up. The food gets trapped around your tonsils and begins to rot. I wouldn't pick at your throat to remove these chunks because this can cause damage (bleeding) and it can result in throat cancer (if you constantely pick around your tonsils) which is very difficult to get rid of. If there are huge chunks you can see, lighty push them out before you start gargling with salt to help finish the 2 weeks of gargling faster. Please note that salt water is quite strong and can burn your taste for a few hours. It tastes horrible at first but you will get use to it. Eat before gargling if you want to taste your food. The salt will kill 99% of all bacteria in your throat. Hope this helps.

Funny, I'd never thought I'd stumble across this topic. And I thought I was kinda strange having these smelly things when I was younger. From this forum, it seems quite a few people have them too...

I had these when I was 5-15yrs old. It sort of appears whenever I drag myself out of bed in the wee hours of the morning - my dad was a travelling salesman and left the house in the early hours of the morning; I'd rush out of bed to see him off whenever his car starts. These smelly things will never appear at any other time of the day for me except on those occassions. They sort of ooze out at the back of my throat from 2 small openings, one on either side of the throat. The last ones appearing were nearly 15 years ago, and I've never had any since. Grown out of them, perhaps?

I remember coughing them out when I was younger as it irritates my throat and giving me that "foreign body" feeling. After a while, I've sort of gotten used to them appearing. I remember I'd used to run to the loo and open up my mouth in front of the mirror to find 2 small yellow stubs sticking out on the walls of my throat. I'd then carefully use my fingers to ease them out by pressing onto the walls at the back of my throat. Sometimes they are shaped like peas, but sometimes I remember they can appear pear-shaped.

I have had these on and off for years. I never really can tell what sets them off but when I get them, I get them several times a week for a period of time. Some times the are huge and are hard to get out. I take a Qtip and dip it in peroxide. Bubbles them right out.
I do think that cheese and peanuts and peanut butter definately contribute to making them worse. Plus I had strep throat when I was younger and have "holey" tonsils anyway.
