I have had a serious problem with choking on everything (mostly saliva) after my open heart surgery 2 years ago. I have repeated told the doctors about this and they seem to just not care. When I fall asleep I get choked on my own saliva and wake up coughing or I wake up feeling like I have pnumonia and have to cough up a lot of phlem. But, the most scary part is things in my mouth go down my wind pipe when I swallow. Tonight I got choked and had a very hard time coughing a small piece of candy up. It went down the wrong pipe.

What can I do, is this a common thing after surgery?. I did have breathing tubes during surgery did something get messed up so the wind pipe isn't closed off enough or what?
Check the side effects of any medications you are taking. I had the same problem for years while on Atenolol. It is gone now that I was changed to Lisinipril. My regular Dr. never did anything about it. My heart Dr. suggested the change saying there was no reason to have to live with these side effects. Hope this helps you.
