What Are Body Shapes?
We all have things we like about our bodies and things we're not to fond of an would rather hide. Are you unhappy with your tummy, hips, butt, breasts, or shoulders? That probably affects the way in which you choose your clothes. In order to look your best, it is important to be aware of your overall body shape or figure — not just the parts you don't like. We can identify seven different body types. All can look wonderful, as you'll see when you look at celebrities with all different body shapes. Which one do you resemble most?

How Estrogens Shape You
So, there are seven rough body types — but what gives you your shape? Your bone structure, muscles and fat give you your body shape. The female hormone estrogen comes in different forms, and these estrogens play a huge role in shaping your body. Both men and women have estrogens, but women in their reproductive years have most of all. Estrogens give women their hips and breasts, which explains why pre-pubescent girls and post-menopausal women have very different shapes.

Body Types
What body type do you have? Look at the pictures closely, and see which one looks most like you. The seven body types are pear, triangle, rectangle (either wider or narrower), inverted triangle, hourglass, round, and diamond. The body types get their names from the proportions of different parts of your body, and how they relate to each other. Before "self-diagnosing" a body type, examine the size and shape of your shoulders, breasts, waist, and hips. While the hour glass body type is generally considered ideal, all body types are beautiful in their own way.

Pear shape: Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez is pear shaped, and she knows all about how to accentuate her best features to make her body look great. You'll see that Jennifer's hips are her widest point and that her curves gradually grow narrower as you look up to her bust. Try knee-length empire-waist dresses and A-line dresses to minimize your hips, or opt to wear dark pants with a light top that sits below the hips. Or accentuate your beautiful curves, as Jennifer Lopez often does!

Triangle shape: Rihanna
Rihanna is the perfect example of a beautiful triangle-shaped woman. Narrow shoulders and wide hips define this body shape. Clothes that emphasize the waist and minimize the hips flatter this body type. Go for empire waists, belts, and A-line skirts. Straight-legged jeans that have a low rise will look great on women with a triangle shape. Neutrally colored pants and bright, patterned tops will make your body look well balanced, and short sleeves will show your narrow body off. If you are really daring — like Rihanna — can show off their waist.

Hourglass Shape: Salma Hayek
If you have an hourglass shape, like Salma Hayek, you have the figure that many consider to be most desirable. That doesn't mean you can wear anything and still look great, though! Do wear tops that cinch in at the waist so you can show off those lovely curves, but don't add bulk around your bust and throw your look off balance. Wrap dresses and skirts will look wonderful on you if you have an hourglass shape, and so do narrow-waisted jackets that stop just above the hip. Avoid wide necklines, and go for narrow or V-shaped ones instead.

Rectangle Shape: Jessica Alba
If you are rectangle shaped, like Jessica Alba, your hips and shoulders have about the same width and you'll wear same-sized tops and bottoms. Rectangle-shaped women have small breasts and minimal waists. Wider, lower necklines with decorations are a great choice for you if you are rectangle shaped. You can also experiment with puffed, flared or cuffed sleeves — or simply roll your sleeves up if you're wearing a T-shirt. Paneled skirts are a good option, and go for low-rise pants. Choose straight lines that accentuate your waist a little when it comes to jackets and coats.

Inverted Triangle Shape: Pamela Anderson
The inverted triangle shape means you have broad shoulders but minimal hips. A large bust creates an even more pronounced inverted-triangle look. Pamela Anderson embraces her body shape and shows it off with tops that reveal her shoulders. Would you prefer to create a look that minimizes your bust and shoulders? Then go for clean, no-fuss tops in a single color. Definitely avoid puffed sleeves or shoulder pads! Go for higher rise pants and skirts that make your hips look broader, and feel free to experiment with belts that will create more of a waist for you.

Round Shape: Renee Zellweger
Renee Zellweger knows how to make the most of her round (or circle, if you prefer) body shape! If you have great arms and wrists like her, don't forget to show them off! Sleeveless tops will work great for you, but so will long tunics. Longer tops are going to look better than tops that stop at the hips, and wear short(ish) skirts with high waists that bring attention to your legs. Don't wear pleated skirts, short jackets, or anything else that adds bulk to your minimally present waist. Do feel free to experiment with lots of neck accessories like huge necklaces and scarves — you have the bust and shoulders for it!

Diamond Shape: Kate Winslet
Diamoned-shaped ladies like Kate Winslet have a big torso with a fairly undefined waist. Make the most of your body shape by showing your shoulders and neck off — you can go for wide round or V-shaped necklines or even wear off-the-shoulder tops. An empire waist will make your bust look bigger, but make sure your tops sit below the hip. Darker pants or skirts will work well for you if you are diamond shaped. Watch out for jackets, pants and skirts that add bulk to the waist, and run away from them as fast as you can!
